How Damaso moved around Mexico City, and how they caught him

Translated by Otis B Fly-Wheel for Borderland Beat from a El Debate article

Subject Matter: Apprehension of Damaso Nunez Lopez
Recommendation: See previous article on his capture.

His code name was "Cereza" or Cherry in English, his persecution started a year and half ago, after they seized his compadre Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. Why "Cereza"? Because Damaso Lopez Nunez, is known as "El Licenciado", would be the icing on the cake for Federal officials who sought to degrade the Sinaloa Cartel, and El Chapo informally told them after his recapture that Damaso would not be caught.

Over time, the Federal Governments intelligence agencies came to believe that "El Licenciado" was consolidating himself as the leader of the cartel, and that in order to defeat the children of El Chapo in the struggle, he had tried to ally himself with the CJNG, in actuality the most powerful cartel in the country.

A Suzuki Swift vehicle was their first clue. It was the vehicle that, used by an assistant, served Damaso Lopez Nunez to move through the city of Mexico without attracting attention.

According to intelligence information to which I had access, this car was picked up at the Mexican Airport of the emerald zone in Atizapan de Zaragoza and went on secondary roads and part of the Chamapa - Lecheria highway to arrive at Santa Fe.

Notwithstanding, sometimes "El Licenciado" rented a helicopter to transfer him to a buildings in the Interlomas zone, from there he arrived at Santa Fe, which is allegedly shared for control by the Sinaloa cartel and CJNG.

Damaso had found in Santa Fe, a place where his family could live without attracting attention. A nice apartment, luxury cars, a pleasant life, but nothing that stands out from the socio-economic level of the area.

According to those responsible for pursuing him, Lopez Nunez almost never slept in the family home, he frequented a doctor at the Angeles del Pedregal hospital, sometimes staying at the Camino Real hotel next door, changing vehicles, and his meetings were held in private residences or low key restaurants.

Since he stopped being number two in the Puente Grande maximum security prison, Damaso Lopez Nunez had lowered his profile, but grown his portfolio. He left the public service, was put under the orders of El Chapo, he was the godfather of his son Damaso Lopez Serrano alias El Mini Lic, and there was no photo of El Licenciado for more than 15 years.

However, the war he waged against the children of El Chapo for control of the Cartel, made him lower his guard and break the golden rule that kept him in the shade. The Federal Intelligence reports reflect that he was allied with CJNG and undertook a war on social media to blame Guzman Salazar for the violence in Sinaloa.

A hacker who became a double agent managed to record a video that allowed the Government to have a current image of him. Following this the operation to capture him was launched to capture him int he Polanco area of Mexico City. The cherry on the cake.

The Atizapan aerodrome is also used, according to the same sources, by the likes of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes "El Mencho" who used helicopters to travel to Interlomas and Santa Fe, where part of his family lived.

  7. I think the issue is much deeper than just "who becomes boss of a drug cartel". Damaso I believe wanted a truce with Mencho & CJNG but the Chapitos wanted no truce. I bet the difference in methods of working plus ego clashes led to the confrontation. I feel the Chapitos are looking at an all out war with CJNG which they feel they can win as they have government officials in their pocket since their father's time as one of the head honchos of Sinaloa cartel.

    1. This stems from the goings on in BCS, Mayo has a temporary agreement with the CJNG to fight against Damaso and his FED. I think this was Damaso trying to negotiate a deal with CJNG to turn on Mayo, a plaza sharing deal, that would get Damaso out of the shit he was in in BCS, but it backfired on Damaso. The fact he was there instead of BCS close to the action and protecting his most important plaza, led to the Feds tracking him.

    1. The legendary status of the CDSnitches lives on. Every one thinks Chapi is the king rat but it's obviously El Mayo. What drug lord stays out of prison for 50 plus years? A snitching drug lord that's who.

    2. I don't think so. I think Mayo is just the final trump card if all the stack falls down. Even Mayo isn't the leader. A group of US businessmen would be the leaders of all cartels, and be profitting from all shipments and have a majority share control of US and Mx Govt agencies, such as border patrol, CIA, and DEA. Point your finger at the top families in the United States and you're probably on the right track.

    3. Unfortunately anything is possible.
We are all aware of the lucrative business of narcotics. And the hidden figures behind the scenes of many questionable business activities from prominent individuals around the world.
      A conspiracy? Interesting!
Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory.
It always seems to have truth to it. But in the end
Such a theory is only that until facts are evident.

No wonder very few people know this site exists. My family in Mexico, the heart of the violence, had never heard of this site. And when they asked their neighbors about it, they said no one paid any attention to it because it was "bias". I'm going to scratch this shit and go back to posting with the real media sites.

I have had more posts rejected, than those that have made the site. Just something BB might want to look into. Thank you BB

Why not move towards an open comments section, than delete inane or offensive bs later. Sometimes I want to comment but I know my comments will probably be rejected while some nonsense will get posted. I guess this comment will be rejected too... anyway, why censor all the time?

    7. @ Abe Reles, let me break this down for you. The rules of the site for posting comments are, no insults, dont be racist, dont be overtly political on non political posts, and dont be overtly religious. Out of the comments he decided are "stupid shit", break the above rules? None of the break the rules so they were let through.

He sounds like a pissed off teenager with not much to say , and is saying it altogether too loudly. If you start off a post with an insult, it wont get through regardless of the content that comes after the insult. He didnt get his own way and spat out his pacifier.

In regards to "nut hugger comments", I have seen some criticism of them here, and I dont personally like them. If the nut huggers actually had a run in with cartel members, they wouldnt nut hug thats for sure. But, when someone throws up their sign, which they do, and all narco news websites have them, someone will respond with a nugget of real information. i.e. Puro sinaloa, someone will respond " jimmy the narco runs ensenada and rosarito", and those responses i note for future reference. Hope this clears it up some for you, and helps you to understand my previous response.

    9. I agree with the post at 2:26. I post information I receive from sources inside the press. Its solid intelligence. I never (or hardly) gets approved. None of it is political or offensive either. It's just news sources. None of it is insulting either. I would say on average about 3 out of 10-12 posts make the board. And it is frustrating when I post something legitimate that gets turned down in favor of some childish or nonsense post. I used to be all about BB. I still come here for information and share what I can, but I use other sites as well now because my posts and information actually make the boards. But keep up the good work Otis and the others. It is appreciated.

    10. '7.03 am, if you see a good article on another site, why don't you translate it and send it in as a guest reporter article? You seem to be missing the point that people come here because we post a good selection of articles from the Mexican press weekly. BB is a one stop shop for news about Mexico, people are free to check out the same sites the reporters do, but they choose to come here to get it in one place. BB has on average 1.5 million hits per month since 2009 and is approaching 150 million hits in total, not bad for blog and five reporters that are active.

    3. Mencho should just keep his stuff moving, and Mayo and the Chapitos can keep their's. I believe Mayo will try to make such a move. He's always been the mediator. He and Chapo's kids have the most political clout because they pay the best. And Mayo is known to use his clout to get his way. As long as the kids keep paying, Mencho will be next to fall. Their roots are much deeper. Otherwise, they'd be dead or locked up. Mayo's kids all cut bogus deals let the cops have a few things, and out in 10. Vicente will be out in less than 2 years. Then Mayo will fade away. It's so simple...Sinaloa pays the best. If Mencho, and Damaso could lay off the pipe, they coulda been a formidable opponent. But there's no honor amongst tweaks.

      Delete
    4. 8:39 why do you think Mencho is taking so many plazas and so any people want to work with him? Mencho also pays handsomely, when two cartels pay the government, it's a war for control and government stay out of it. but Mencho will kill of the less experienced spoiled little brats though. There is a reason why mencho went completely independent after chapo arrest. Nobody respects chapitos over mayo or mencho even if their daddy is chapo.

      Delete
    5. Less experienced??? Dude, do you know who those kids are? They grew up in this business. They had their idiot moment like every dumb kid, but Mayo has them in line. Damaso is done, his kid and Mencho next...Mencho may pay his workers well, but Sinaloa been paying the big politicos big money for generations. Mencho would be wise to stay outta this fight. Make his money, and chill.
