Chasing El Chapo

Borderland Beat Posted by DD, republished from Fusion

It seems that since Chapos escape from prison last month every investigative journalist that covers the Mexico beat has made a trip to Sinaloa to get "first hand" news.  This reporter from Fusion, , took a little different approach.  She went into Chapo's home turf to find out what the authorities were doing in their search for Chapo.  And she found a military presence (sort of)  near Chapo's home town of Tuna.  Mostly what she found first hand was a lot of beautiful scenery of the Sierra Madres and an invitation (not from the military) to leave town within the next 30 minutes..

We went to Mexico for a firsthand look at the hunt for El Chapo

Mexico’s notorious drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, is still on the run after escaping prison earlier this year. El Chapo made his second escape from a maximum security prison in Central Mexico through a secret shower hatch and a 1-mile tunnel.

Days after his shocking disappearance, Fusion’s Mariana van Zeller arrived in Mexico to get a first hand look at the hunt for the world’s most wanted man. What she witnessed was beyond anything expected, and her mission then took an unexpected turn.

In this Fusion original special, Narcos, Guns & Money: Chasing El Chapo, van Zeller also travels to El Chapo’s hometown in Culiacán, Sinaloa—one of Mexico’s most dangerous places—to understand why a community continues to revere a drug kingpin that has brought so

much violence and death to his country and abroad.

  1. Then they wonder why journalists get killed and they make a big deal out of it. Who in the fuck goes to the most dangerous man on earths house without an invitation and when they get there go up to his moms house and ask to speak with her? I never heard lf any journalist going up to the mountains and trying to speak with osama or his mother.. Gringo journalists looking for trouble thats all this was. Im happy they made it out OK.

So because you never heard of it, journalist going to dangerous places, so it must be true that it never happens? Really? Did you know that journalist did go to interview Osama Bin Laden? Journalist going to dangerous places happens ALL the time. Sometines it's a good thing to try and look beyond your small bubble of immediate existence so you'll know that it doesn't depend or care about your personal thoughts.

    2. Chapo ain't no where near the most dangerous man on earth..its all his meth head hench men known as GN that make him sound dangerous

    3. The only group that needs to be scared of Chapo are the underage beauty queens of Sinaloa not journalist.

    4. Gringo journalists are much safer just like DEA agents.....they are protected by the Kiki camarena incident....you kill one and you get so much fucking heat it's not worth it.....and many journalists have interviewed chapos mom....that said it is surprising they went w out a fixer or advance notice to have there credentials checked to prove they were who they say they were

    5. Wonder what would have happened if the journalists had of taken the Mexican mens offer of paying to see Chapos mom? They refused to pay to see her according to the video but what if they had, would they have got to talk to her or just got scammed?

    6. Chapo's mom is a religious lady, she reads her bibles like so many american victims of religious brainwash, all she said was el chapo now knows more about life and she hopes he mends his ways...nothing there but a provocation...
--why doesn't Marianne vanz interview El Capulina? He has been accused before the US government t of being a drug lord, trafficker and money launderer, he is not hiding, he is tight with peña nieto, he is POWERFUL, so much so that the US chose to hide his file, WHY THE HELL IS THAT HAPPENIN'?
--oops sorry, "El Capulina" is 'la fabis' metro-homo manlio fabio beltrones, PRI...
--another candidate with similar trajectory, manuel cavazos lerma, "el raton viejo", his file, very thick, has also been made a secret of state by US government...

  2. Stating Culiacan is Chapos hometown is inaccurate. Badiraguato is a world of difference from Culiacan. Second; Culiacan is a huge city with great people amd most that don't trade in narcotics. Many of my cousins and family move to Culiacan from badiraguato to study and I have cousin and friends that work with state gob (Culiacan es estate capital de Sinaloa) and everyone who for state must drug test to hold work. I say because Culiacan is wonderful city and it is safe unless you trade in drogas or narco money. Unlike in south of Mexico and east Mexico we don't have many extortion or sequestadores if not a narco (thank you CDS). Culiacan is very good with music, food, parties, jardins and family having fun.

    5. @Masorden relax narco preacher culiacan is 10 most dangerous in the world people a soon is the sun goes down places are ghostowns.and only big bosses and their families receive protection and sucurity not the rest of the population sinaloa has become rich in deaths morturaries are big business second behind drugs these narcos die in style with mortuaries looking like the belagio .life expectansy for a sicario is 25 .so how are they dying if the city is so secure theres eyes and ears evrywhere people are thought since a young age not to talk about narco you will get picked up and dissapear so you better smile when they these narcos do anything thats why these airheads here say so many nice stories and how safe culiacan is if they didnt well they no the drill!

    6. @4:11-stated as though you know what your talking about but in reality you've never been to Culiacan and probably never left your couch and smartphone. Culiacan is a magnificent city with much more than just narcos and I've partied with all night until daylight for 20 years and never seen an assassination. But I can't say the same for Georgetown - just outside the U.S. Capital. Also - Culiacan has the finest women in all of Mexico!

  3. Yea, I saw this piece yesterday. This little excursion is tantamount to parachuting into Syria and requesting to meet with al-Baghdadi's mother. Excuse me? Thank you for the reporting, but the way I see it you just sacrificed 8 of your 9 lives.

    1. Journaist have been there many times before and not that of a big deal as people with corrido infected brains imagine. Sorry, but it seems at times that some BB readers are retarded 12 year olds (there's a lot of very intelligent ones but there's a small contigent that makes me wonder about there age and level of education).

  4. Awesome coverage seen that documentary three times already. The military presense going to Chapos hometown was kind of shady though. Couldnt believe that just 2 military officers were at a checkpoint doing surviellence for the biggest capo in the world. Yet they guaranteed the safety of Van Zeller n crew.

  5. If you're white and you're walking around Mexico asking questions about the drug trade it's like swimming with crocodiles. Do yourself a favor and leave Mexico immediately. Save yourself while you can. You've been warned!

  8. Yea Right " secret shower hatch and a 1-mile tunnel " edit out secret and we may be able to believe some of it . The USA has held the Mexicans hand and led them to Guzman enough . I think now they will take him . It wont be Dog Chapman doing it either. Bet nobody from the U.S. dies in the operation either .

  9. Without seeing the videos, I can tell you one thing, el pinchi chapo with all his corruption and defects, is a much better person than any priista politician and many more politicians from other parties, the crap has been piled on him, and he is still ahead, just my opinion...he still does not talk about anybody...

  11. If you're a white person and you're going around Mexico asking questions about the drug trade. Then essentially you're asking to be murdered. Think of it a lot like swimming with crocodiles. A big no no. Save yourselves while you still can. Leave immediately. You have been warned!

  14. Crazy. If these reporters would have gone to Tamaulipas, Michoacan, or probably any other part of Mexico they would have disappeared. I'm not saying Sinaloa is not that bad, it is. It just makes me sad that our country is a beautiful as it is dangerous. The cartels are only half the problem, the politicos are just as bad. Thank you to all the Reporters in BB and the rest of the world who risk their lives to do what they love to do. GOD Speed. El Nemesis-

    2. @10:13AM, good points. Kudos on bravery to the journalist & the crew, but... There is no real way to prove when the footage was actually filmed. El Chapo has made a hobby out of being AWOL, with a couple prison stopovers & escapes to spice it up, keep things lively in la Sierra. Asking the 3 Army dudes posted on an unpaved mountain road if they'd seen Shorty could have been a question from last month, last year or a decade, ago--the answer's always gonna be the same, "No," followed by a few nervous laughs.

    3. I watched the first video, and a little of the second. This type of journalism really makes me nervous. Everyone are commenting on the ladies huevos. What about Miguel homeboy. He lives in Mexico. I gotta believe he had permision to venture in. I just hope he didn't cross the line. Twice, I heard La Tuna was Chapos hometown in the videos.

  18. That woman is an idiot. It's unecessary risk. The USA is full of crap so is Mexico and I'm tired of seeing us send billions to Mexico. We could send a drone over the course of a day and take out all of those guys in that town including Chapos Mother...The truth is Mexico can't support it's people and Chapo creates jobs....It's an economic necessity.

  19. odds are that this video was made in New Mexico and faking it with militars and bs.. This is plain Journalism.
