Blockades and Shootouts in Reynosa Admidst Rumors "El Gafe" Arrested

Itzli Borderland Beat

On Friday April  17, a series of shootouts and blockades swept the border city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas.

Around 10:00 AM federal forces were attacked in the Zona Centro and Industrial colonia.  The situation was calm for a while, but after 12:40 PM shootouts and blockades took place on Hidalgo boulevard in the Valle Alto colonia, where an unnamed cartel leader was arrested.

Thereafter violence exploded throughout the city, including the free highway Matamoros-Monterrey, Morelos boulevard, and Hidalgo boulevard, as armed individuals hijacked vehicles and set them on fire in an apparent attempt to aid in rescuing their captured comrade.  Likewise, the offices of the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) in the city was shot.

By 3:00 PM, federal forces began regaining control of the city, though at 4:30 PM shootouts continued in the colonias of Vista Hermosa, Caracoles, Villa Florida, and Las Cumbres, as well as Morelos boulevard near the commercial centers and Oriente freeway, near Parque Cultural.

El Gafe being transferred to DF-after his arrest hell broke out in SW Reynosa
According to social media, the individual arrested was Sergio Velázquez, alias "El Gafe", the current head of plaza in Reynosa and overall leader of the Los Metros faction of the Gulf Cartel.  A native of the state of Veracruz, "El Gafe" was once a member of the military, though, despite his alias, he was not a member of GAFE.

His criminal career was first noted as a bodyguard for Héctor David Delgado Santiago, alias "El Metro 4".  It appears that “El Gafe” became head of plaza in Reynosain the summer of 2014 and leader of Los Metros following the October arrest of Juan Francisco Saénz Tamez, alias "El Panochitas".

As the war against the Matamoros faction of the Gulf Cartel has progressed, it had been rumored that "El Gafe" took refuge in Saltillo, Coahuila, leaving "El Toro" in charge and giving orders via radio.

Recent rumors placed "El Gafe" in Jalisco, where it has been alleged he owns ranches, though if his arrest proves true, this was obviously wrong or he recently returned to Reynosa.  This picture has appeared online, allegedly showing him immediately after his arrest:

    1. Yes long live the Mexican army. The pot growers need them to fumigate their crops for insects. They also need to help the growers in transporting their crops to their destination points. If you do not know this is happening you do not know much if you are living in Mexico. They play an important part in getting the drugs to market.

  7. I am always shocked that criminals can just take over a city in Mexico for days/weeks at a time and The government does little to nothing to protect citizens ..almost like they are in on it (they are). Cartels are just armed branches of political parties (PRD,PRI,PAN)...so sad and frustrating that Tue elites in Mexico use the people to play chess.

    5. It's all good if it's just the cartel but if they give Isis, russia ,china ,or any country like them a pass to cross then that will cause those who didn't care , don't want to care, and others who liked them to be against them. That will be their downfall. But if they don't let them through then they will probly have no problems staying in control of the border. I heard rumors they might have let them cowards Isis or other Muslim terrorists across. Once some of us have some proof of this we are going to fight back.

  12. This is beyond ridiculous. The ATF just released a report last week which documented an increase in the flow of weapons to Mexico from the U.S. In the report, ATF traced 11,061 weapons that were seized in Mexico in 2014. These weapons were either manufactured or sold by vendors in the U.S. This represents 71.9% of all the weapons traced. This is an INCREASE over prior years. The U.S. needs to do a much better job in limiting free market gun dealing. It is the citizens of Mexico who suffer not because of the U.S.'s voracious appetite for drugs but throws gasoline on the fire by exporting so many weapons and doing very little to intervene. K. Onda

    6. Nothing but mexicans/mex-americans aquiring weapons legally through the free weapons market of the USA. There isn't much the US can do to stop it, is the mexican govt responsabillity to stop those guns from getting into their country since they aren't allowed to carry rifles etc. The United States can't even stop all those drugs from getting in, much less when things are going the other way.

    7. I low-crawl from Ft. Benning, et.al. We have a responsibility to husband our resources--most certainly those that lead to death and destruction. We have a moral responsibility to develop and protect the law abiding citizenry of Mexico. Drop the John Wayne B.S. and realize that Mexico are our neighbors and we need to do right by them. That does not mean we need to ignore their violence and the impunity of law.; K. Onda

    10. Just like the idiots who blame the US for the drug trade because of our "addicts" I blame Mexicans for their greed for guns. The US has the supply and the Cartels have the demand. Tell your Mafiosos to stop wanting the guns and maybe the flow of guns will stop. If the Mexican government tried harder to stop the drugs coming into the US maybe just maybe the US will try harder to stop the flow the guns into Mexico. It's a two way street my friends. Oh crap I almost forgot there's a gun show in my city today. Thanks for reminding me I got to stock up on some ammo. Peace!!!

    12. The guns don't frivolously kill. Catching the Stupid does. Mexico is suffering with a major case of the stupid right now. & Stupid is as stupid does.

I'll also note a quantity of said weaponry was sent by various groups to the ADs or did everyone forget that?

Anyhow, YOU are simply a stupid POS if you go around slaughtering your own countrymen just because you have firearms.

    13. If it was the Americans that were the reason for this problem then why is the cartel pulling the trigger? Wake up idiot anyone on here with that lame ass excuse is gettin his information from some idiot who hates America without knowing who is pulling the trigger.it isn't America's fault this is happening , it's the government's fault. The government in power now is not work in for the American people. There are traitors in the American government. Some other country has taken control as silently as they can. Unfortunately for them more then a few of real Americans who want real freedom are waking up. A little slow and almost a hair late. I don't care if the cartel supplys the weed shops or kill their own people. It's someone's own choice to smoke or not but the other stuff like if they bring in other then Mexicans or kill innocent people then Fuck them we will start using our to tools to sway their minds. One shred of evidence of some Muslim comin across the border, I mean solid evidence then it's time to start making contact to either make sure we cam come to some agreement or put the hammer of God down on the border.

They will wait until both sides are weaker then it's on. Or maybe even a truce with one side to cleanse the other faction. Who knows. Crazier things have happened in this drug war.

  18. Comandante Gafe might be the man behind all the divisions within CDG and the violence between the Metros and Ciclones in his attempt to consolidate more power since he assumed the leadership of the Metros faction of the CDG. It is believe he was the man responsible for the murders of Metro 3 Metro 4; perhaps responsible for the elimination of Gringo, Puma, their cells, alongside side X-20, as they were blamed for the murders of M 3 and M 4. Probably responsible for snitching on X-20. He probably went on to snitch out Polimenso, Juan Perros, Mellado, and Juan Rodriguez once they helped eliminate Comandante Pakito's cell in 2014. For the most part, it is believed he was the main player trying to bring in Matamoros under his control during this recent surge in violence in la Ribereña, or border region of Tamaulipas. Gage's capture might bring some stability to the region as he was responsible for a lot of it. Then again it might not.

    2. No you're wrong, the citizens of reynosa warned them to stop having shootouts openly and to not ride around in convoys doing drugs and selling to the kids or else they would denounce their exact location to the soldiers because the locals knew where they all lived and who their family members were, metros responded by ambushing the soldiers but it never ended well for them. I think the last thing metros would do is betray each other and let their guard down because the Cardenas family aggressively wants reynosa back
