Tennessee mother and 2 yr old feared kidnapped in Matamoros, Tamaulipas

by lucio using material from el manana and face book

[Lucio] There is additional information following the first post, thank you to the Borderland Beat reader who sent it in.

A search is underway for two American citizens believed to have been kidnapped while in the border city of Matamoros, México.

Matamoros is the location of  the last verifiable sighting.

Tennessee residents, twenty-four year-old Kelly Jean Shumake and her two year-old daughter went missing, on December 10th. Family members have filed a report with  police, of  the  disappearance,  prompting a multi-agency investigation.

The family traveled to Brownsville, then to Matamoros, to distribute posters and file missing person’s reports there.

J.J. Treviño,  Brownsville police spokesman, confirmed that a complaint was received and filed regarding  the search for an American woman and her child, and he confirmed a complaint was also filed  in the city of Matamoros, Tamaulipas.

"We cannot do much in these cases, it isn’t  under our jurisdiction, so this limits us in investigation, we reply on what is provided to us." said Trevino.

The U.S. Consulate in Matamoros recently released a warning to American citizens traveling to or through the state of Tamaulipas, given recent reports of express kidnappings happening near commercial areas in broad daylight.

Additional,  detailed information from KEVO-Newscenter23

BROWNSVILLE, TX

A 24-year-old mother and her 2-year-old daughter from Tennessee have gone missing in Mexico.

Kelly Shumake and her 2-year-old daughter Clara Bella have been missing in Matamoros since December 10th.

Her sister Rosa Farmer says that the family moved to Mexico last year after her husband was deported.

Rosa Farmer, Sister of missing woman says, "They got three kids together. A 4-year-old, 3-year-old, and 2-year-old. (on)The 10th of December, her and the 2-year-old came over here to go to the hospital for medical attention, and nothing else. She just disappeared."

Investigators in Brownsville say that they never checked in to the hospital in Brownsville, or have any records of them crossing the border.

Farmer, "She's never done anything like this before. She's never just decided to leave and not let anybody know what's going on and she would have never left her two other kids. So I know something's wrong."

Rosa came to Brownsville and has been traveling back and forth to Matamoros searching for her sister and niece.

Farmer, "The kids, the other two, they miss their mom. They miss Clara, their sister. They ask every day, 'when is my momma coming home', and it's hard."

Jose Trevino, BPD Spokesperson, "As far as what we know is that she and her 2-year-old daughter were last seen on that date. Now, we're asking to see if anybody has seen her or knows of her, to give us a call."

Brownsville Police information is very limited on this case since she has no known ties to Brownsville.

She was last seen in Matamoros and her family lives in Tennessee, and there were only rumors that she was seen shopping downtown Brownsville prior to when she went missing December 10.

If you have any information on this case, you are urged to call Brownsville Crime Stoppers at 546-8477.

    5. Does anyone here know anyone who lives in Monterrey and could tell me the state of affairs as far as drug cartels? I won't give much detail but a friend of mine went to see her parents in Monterrey over the Christmas break. She was supposed to be back on the 27th of December but hasn't been heard from since the 24th of December. She has 2 kids, an apartment, nursing school...she wouldn't just walk away. How do I get someone to listen when all the police do is write a report and that is it? She lives in Texas and her apartment has not been disturbed, so she is still over there.

  3. Sad this is big news in sources reporting Mexico events only. In the states it isn't big news. Maybe in the state she is from. She could have at least left the child with someone if she didn't care about her own safety. Now the poor child may suffer due to her negligence and disregard to the CONSTANT warnings about travel to Mexico. The US government won't make a big issue of it due to this happening in Mexico. If it were in the states and she was taken to Mexico, than that would be a game changer and hell would be paid. I bet the father is of Mexican decent and she was there to go see him. No one could be that clueless about what is happening in that deteriorating country. Travel at your own risk. The Marine that was kidnapped was mentioned, and nothing came of that. People just need to stop thinking they have the right to travel anywhere. Certain places don't recognize those so-called rights.

  5. WHY? Why would you go to Mexico via la frontera? Why especially would you go to the one state with the highest rate of kidnapping in all of the Mexico? I don't care if your daughter's father is from Matamoros. He should know better, and don't tell me you followed to Tamps for the love. Yes this is sad, and you can see that the daughter is adorable, ALL THE MORE REASON TO NOT DO IT!!! Like the young couple from Denver a couple of years ago, and the went to stay in Juarez, and the husband stopped a mafioso from taking his car, and the punk left and came back with his henchmen and they emptied 100 rounds into the guy! If you must go to Mexico then FLY! Don't drive into the Tamps or Chihuahua especially. Don't stay in the northern states. Don't go to Michoacan or Guerrero. Do your homework. Find out where it has been cleared and approved for travel.

  19. Unfortunately this poor lady truly didn't know the dangers of traveling in Mexico. The further a person lives from the border the more uneducated they are about making noise in a city like Matamoros. A lot of white Americans believe only bad things happen to bad people in Mexico and that's not the case. They don't understand that it can happen to anyone. I hope the people responsible die a terrible death.

  20. The Mexican people can't fight for themselves against their corrupt government and corrupt military. They should request the US to come in and clean house. 20 million Mexicans aren't in the US because things are so good in Mexico It's clear to see a revolution on the horizon.

  27. She went there, because her husband, the father to her children...got sent back to Mexico. I am sure she didn't want to split her family up, who does? This is really terrible, not just because they are American citizens, but because they are people! I have seen many cases like this before, we all have...lots of times, their spouse knows more than they are willing to share. One things for certain, just because she's an American and her child, there will not be a massive search for her. Maybe if she was some rich person, or came from a family of wealth, maybe then things would be different...it usually is. I bet if she had the last name Romney, they would be turning up every rock in Mexico, looking them! I just hope they don't end up on the list of people found dead, or missing forever. To those who think she deserves this, just proves your ignorance and complete lack of empathy for mankind!

  30. I would also consider asking the sister for a photo of the brother in law... The father of the children... If we can find the father of the children just maybe we can start getting answers as to where they are... And what happened to them.... Find the fathers family in matamoros and start from there.... Post pictures of the children and the father.... And also what colonia they lived in matamoros..... I mean pictures of the whole family so we can put a face with the missing family members and just maybe one of us that goes to matamoros might run into them..... I hope this is a misunderstanding and not some dispicable act.... This type of people just dont disapear... They were inocent bystandards... Makes no sense... The cartel has no use for them.... Foul play by the husband is my first guess.... Then ask how did she get or was going to get from her colonia to the bridge to cross into brownsville ..... She probably is not fluent in spanish plus why would her husband let her go on her own to the bridge.... Expllanation.... This is how it works with people that cant cross but have a spouse that does cross.... The husband would drive, or go with the wife to the bridge and wait there for the wife to go over to brownsville shop, go to the doctor, or whatever buisness she has... Then wife crosses back south while husband waits and they meet again just south of bridge and that is how it is done by many spouses that cant cross...... fishy fishy fishy

    2. I agree with 10:20. Something stinks, big holes in the info. Unless I am wrong, it was 20 days before a report was made? And that was by the woman's family? Did the "husband" file a report in Mex? Where are the other 2 children? I know the articles say with the father but is that verified? The fact that the woman used an alias worries me some. This is for the family of the missing: There is a lot that can be done to bring this attention. There are a ton of organizations dedicated to bringing awareness to missing. If I can be of any help please let me know.

  32. @12:21, @12:22

I get the 'drug war' and its brutality. What I wanted to convey is how can so many innocent foreigners (not the ones who go to Mexico for illegal agendas), but innocents like Canadian Ron Lloyd MacKintosh who for no reason other than sick sport was murdered with his own belt tied around a tree; American Harry Devert dismembered while riding his motorcycle through Mexico;...over 100 Canadians murdered in Mexico with Mexican officials mostly blaming the deceased for their own demise--to which Canada has proven the 'official' Mexican versions highly flawed!.

    @12:25
'Makes no sense... The cartel has no use for them'.
Exactly my point. Cartels have a business to run. So how can so many Mexicans who are not involved with the drug/cartels simple go out in broad daylight and slaughter decent tourists? (Again, not all tourists are innocent of drugs, guns etc.)

It seems like some sick offshoot of society for whatever reason(s) has mutated into barbaric wasteland. It's unimaginable that such atrocities take place on law abiding tourists -- who if they cannot be protected or left alone then local innocent Mexicans don't stand a chance against these sadistic thugs (not referring to cartles--everyone knows their agenda/consequences).

May this young American women and her baby be a positive 'living' statistic and not a victims of lawless thuggery.

    1. Ignorance is bliss especially for people like you who know nothing of the drug war. Im a fellow proud Canadian from Toronto and lived in Michoacan for 12 years and seen atrocities committed around innocent people not just "tourists". How dare you call the entire population (the ones NOT, I repeat N.O.T involved with the drug trade or criminal organizations) barbarians. You my friend, like 12:25 said need to either read about this "war" more or see it for yourself. I married a mexican woman and have "mexican" kids with canadian blood. The situation that Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderon left the entire country in before and after their campaign had me spent my entire life savings to leave Mexico and bring my family here in my native Canada. My wife unfortunately went back to visit her family for Christmas in Michoacan 3 years ago and was murdered by The templarios after refusing to be kidnapped. Tourists sometimes are in the wrong place at the wrong time and are targeted by CRIMINALS not civilians. This poor woman and her daughter were either victims of senseless by Los Zetas who are known for nonsense violence or a band of thugs trying to make a quick buck. I pray for the missing family as much as i pray for you. The lawlessness is happening because of greed and corruption of the government that gave these monsters known as the carteles power. BB is no place for closeted racism my friend. Au revoir.
