Iguala mayor's wife charged with organized crime offenses

By Lucio using information from AP and Borderland Beat archives

The wife of the ex-mayor of Iguala, the Mexican city where 43 college students went missing in September, has been ordered jailed indefinitely for organized crime, prosecutors said Monday.

Maria de los Angeles Pineda had been held under provisional arrest until now, in the case which has rocked Mexico. The 43 are feared dead.

Today, a judge issued a warrant for her pretrial detention "for her likely role in committing organized crime ... and operations with funds of illicit origin," said Tomas Zeron, who leads the criminal investigation unit of the prosecutor's office.

The students went missing September 26, in a massacre by a police-backed gang that sparked nationwide protests and caused a crisis for President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Confessions made during the investigation have indicated that the ex mayor, Jose Luis Abarca, ordered police to crack down on the students to stop them from protesting at a public event his wife was to lead.
Maria Pineda's family including her parents

Authorities say the aspiring teachers vanished after narco-linked police attacked their buses in the city of Iguala, allegedly under orders from the mayor and his wife in a night of terror that left seven other people dead.

Among the other seven murder victims,  were a 15 year old soccer player killed as police open fired on the team bus on that hellish night, and a young father Julio Mondragon, a normalista whose body was discovered on the morning of the 27th.  His face had been flayed

Pineda's family, including her parents, are members of Guerreros Unidos Cartel, with a long history of being a part of organized crime, initially with BLO.  All family members, with the exception of Maria, have been incarcerated at least once, for organized crime activities.

Two of Pineda’s brothers were killed on the order of Arturo Beltrán Leyva.  Maria’s mother was kidnapped and interviewed by her captors.  In the video she was asked about the killings of her sons, and she said they were killed because of a betrayal to BLO.

The police then delivered the young men to members of the Guerreros Unidos cartel  who told investigators they took them in two trucks to a landfill, killed them, burned their bodies and dumped them in a river.

For now, only one of the students has been positively identified from charred remains, which leaves little hope of finding the 42 others.

    3. I disagree, they could've walked, I give you that, hell they might had never gone to jail if the students case was kept a local thing, but given the international interest and the anger it caused in mexico as a country the mexican state has no real choice but to prosecute, at least on this instance, they need this, they need the picture of that horrible woman to go viral in handcuffs and say that justice is being served. Meanwhile all kinds of other atrocities go on all around mexico and the criminals remain free.

  2. Something i noticed is that in mexico you never see criminals being locked up in orange suits . Just an obvservation. On the US everyone is used to relating the color orange for the most part with prisioners.Z40 ,Chapo ,mamito, el H, el rey Zambada,Vicente none have ever been shown with orange suits. But this one is being displayed as if she is a straight prisoner . Maybe im wrong but it kibda looks like they put her in a big orange suit to make every one believe she is a prisoner. What do you guys think? Maybe im wrong

    1. You could be right about the jumpsuit being an impression they are trying to give. Or maybe she didn't want to get her designer cloths ruffled in a perp walk.

    3. It's just the sweater/blouse that happened to be orange which she was wearing at the time. There's no special prisoner suit on her.

  4. They are being tried on the minds of the public, in a hurry, to close the railroad...
--the imperial couple of iguala had been done with their event for about two hours before the students were on the area, the imperial couple also had no deals of any kind with the students, and NO drugs fueled frictions...
--there was also nothing personal and no protests against the imperial couple.
--the only people in the world with problems with the normal rurales and their students, teachers and curricula was/is emilio chuayffet chemor, and enrique pena nieto because of the education reform they are hellbent on imposing on all of mexico, to turn the mexican students into 12 hour a day zombies, to work 6 days a week serving al patron without any politicking in the middle, namely imposing the maoist method of making the rabble into ignorant idiotized robot-zombies, aka the red guards, looks like now the maoist method is welcome for the rich elitist vulture capitalist, as long as it is applied to the rabble...
--AND the imperial couple would not have anyting to do with seech high faluttin' pretenses, also their method, the classic i don't give a damn of the real sicario, kill'em in person and leave the carcass right there where it drops, no way they would bendesperately bothering to disappear 43 too many people...
--enrique pena nieto, and emilio chuayffet chemor, murderous butchers with a long track record...
--ahi 'ta, que chingaos gano la pendeja de la maria de los angeles con andarselas aflojando al governador angel aguirre???

  7. "Held indefinitely" in Mexico means "held until everyone forgets about her in two months and then let go".

  9. How many years do they give in mx for Organized Crime??

See how it is?.. after living like 'kings/queens' they end up living like rats caged with other rats. When real justice is served..

  10. The world is watching . I live in the US and am pure gringo . I know a lot of people that are following this . All the serious minded mature Mexican immigrants are watching for sure .
I don't think these 2 will see freedom again . Real justice may be hard to get down there when a situation isn't so visible but the cats out of the bag on this one .Once its been exposed its over . What real value would these 2 be to the cartel now ? They will never be in a position of public authority again .
I think they lost all value as a criminal to their boss .
Their biggest value is information now . If a person that will kill without remorse will inform against his criminal accomplices more likely than a lesser criminal , or one with remorse . After all if he will kill you he will do anything to you .
These 2 will cooperate to help them selves . They will even point at one another .Theyre done.

All for the glorious greenback. Something Hitler would have done. Two truckloads of human beings delivered to the execution site to be executed. Mf POS's.

  15. Diez mil pesos would make for a short, very exciting incarceration for La Viuda Negra. Her esposo too. The rest of the assholes in gobernacion have to learn FEAR. No one with impunity. No one exempt. If it takes justicia desde la gente so be it.

  17. does anyone know if the MIL of the mayor was released when kidnapped?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Obviously in Mexico most of the gender discrimination is against women, but when it comes to convicting people of crimes, I believe women get off more easily. Not that her husband the mayor is likely to get a harsh sentence, or have to serve his entire sentence, but I think she'll get off even more easily.
