Taking A Look At The “Zetas-Cross” Theory

Chivis Martinez for Borderland Beat

Are the Zs conducting battles by blueprint to choke off rivals?
Examining the Zetas-Cross Theory which suggests they are.....

A book titled, “Executioners Men”, was published this year.  It is the first book ever written exclusively  about the Zetas Cartel.
The authors of the book are the much respected George W. Grayson and Samuel Logan,  experts on the Mexican drugwar and Los Zetas.  In the back of the book in the section “Conclusions” they touch on the “Zetas-Cross” theory, developed by Southern Pulse investigators in Mexico.  The theory is that the Zetas may be working from a blueprint that designates battles to capture plazas that complete an east to west corridor, from Tampico to Durango through San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas, and a north to south corridor, running from Nuevo Laredo through Zacatecas and into the states of Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit.

With these corridors consolidated, The Golfo Cartel would be isolated and what remains of the La Familia Michoacana and their splinter group The Knights Templar.

Essentially, by moving to dominate in these plazas, the Knight Templar would be severed from their geographical link to the border, choking and eliminating them.
An extraction reads; “They (Zs) have survived an onslaught from powerful enemies only to emerge stronger.  In two years they have counted a presence in 17 of the 31 states and the federal district.  The cutthroats pose a growing threat in Central America, especially Guatemala; and its tentacles plunge into Colombia and beyond, into Africa and Europe.”

Los Zetas have profited from a complex mixture of
1. Good Timing (and luck)
2. Poor decisions by the government and adversaries
3. The counterproductive “kingpin Strategy” (focusing on capturing capos)
4. Strong diabolical leadership
5. An enduring paramilitary model that places above all else, command, control, and accounting
6. PSYOPS (psychological operations, military style actions designed to influence the perceptions and attitudes

Grayson and Logan give credit to the relationship between Zs and BLO that empowered them to expand quickly into Monterrey and Zacatecas.  They suggest that it’s their link to La Linea, (enforcer wing of the Juarez Cartel), that may well be the key to Juarez for Zs. If Zs form a strong alliance with La Linea that partnership would fill a void that exists for tha cartel, the services of expert hit men, in place of relying so heavily on young, inexperienced recruits.
It is for these ties and operations that Interpol, has deemed them one of the most active DTOs in the world, and reside on Mexico’s and DCs “Most Wanted” lists alongside Sinaloa Cartel’s El Chapo.
In the following article Samuel Logan explains the Zetas-Cross Theory written late last year.  It is interesting to see what conflicts have incurred and where and how they align with the theroy it is something to weigh as future events unfold.
Tracking Los Zetas - The Zeta Cross
For months, I have continued to ask a series of simple questions to contacts around Mexico and the US..
The primary question is: "do you think Los Zetas are strategizing to cut the country in half?" This question usually surfaces within a longer conversation about Zeta activity in Mexico and, most recently, in Guatemala, where the organization's effect on society has riveted local and international observers.
The first response to my question about Los Zetas in Mexico, however, is usually physical: a quixotic look, raised eyebrows, a frown. The question is open-ended; as intended, it sparks further discussion, and an informal interview ensues. The resulting information, carefully procured over months of discussion and interaction, has fused together into what is so far a loosely tethered theory I call, simply, The Zeta Cross map.
Since what we call in our book the "War in the North" began, Los Zetas have fought for control of Nuevo Laredo. I continue to believe that they, through Miguel Treviño's own special brand of barbarism, hold on to this plaza.
The next node to the south is Monterrey. As current events unfold, it remains clear that Los Zetas are still fighting for control of the plaza.
If you trace a finger on a map down Mx Federal highway 54, the next major stop along the Zetas Cross is Zacatecas. This is the hub and where the vertical and horizontal lines meet.

Part of the theory, while focused on strategy, breaks down the management of the organization, as it plays out between El Lazca, considered Los Zetas number one, and Miguel Treviño, considered number two. Many of us agree that Treviño remains focused on the drug trafficking side of the Zetas business enterprise, while El Lazca remains focused on other business streams, especially extortion. I would argue that for the sake of their relationship, the men do communicate, engage in profit sharing like two Sr. partners in a professional services firm, and mostly stay out of one another's business. As such El Lazca, while on the move, has made the state - and city - of Zacatecas an important hub for Los Zetas activity across Mexico, whereas Treviño remains entrenched in Nuevo Laredo.
Recent activity in Zacatecas points to what appears to be a "better late than never" move by rival groups to construct a united front to block Zeta expansion south.
The united front against Los Zetas in Zacatecas looks a lot like what we saw in February 2010, when the Gulf Cartel, elements of the Sinaloa Federation, and the Familia Michoacana - as it was then known - grouped together to force Los Zetas out of Tamaulipas. Their offensive was largely successful, pushing Los Zetas into a tactical retreat, which I believe pulled their front lines back north to Nuevo Laredo and south to Tampico. Since then, Los Zetas have pushed back into Tamaulipas, but have yet to regain position in Matamoros.
In Zacatecas, the same sort of united front has formed, though I'm not sure if it will be as strong or as effective as the first "united cartels" joint venture. The united front in Zacatecas is made up of two splinter groups, still within their own start up phase, and the Gulf Cartel.
According to my friends at the Excelsior, La Resistencia, El Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación, and members of the Gulf Cartel are all pushing back against Los Zetas' expansion south from Zacatecas into Aguascalientes and Jalisco - namely Guadalajara.
The line up is interesting: we have three disparate groups formed together under a loose alliance to fight against a single paramilitary organization. Gunmen on both sides are well-armed, poorly trained, and highly motivated by pay, reward of ascension within their organizations, and the promise of loot - the perfect recipe for a blood bath.
For a review of these splinter groups, check out InSight Crime's coverage of the atomization of Jalisco in the wake of Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel's death in mid-2010.
The battle lines in Zacatecas have been drawn and mapped, thanks again to Excelsior

Now, moving south from Zacatecas, and assuming that Los Zetas have a good chance at breaking through the Resistencia-CJNG-CDG united front, Aguascalientes and Guadalajara are the next two stops on the route south. If Los Zetas capture control of Guadalajara, the hard part is over. It would be a matter of time, I would argue, before the organization forces south to capture the port at Manzanillo in Colima.

I cannot overemphasize, however, the difficult task of capturing Guadalajara. Since the days of "El Padrino" who helped El Chapo - apart from the Arellano-Felix brothers and Amado Carrillo-Fuentes - get started, Guadalajara has been tightly held by Sinaloa Federation interests. Any Zeta offensive to take this city will be a long, nasty fight

So, back to the question: "do you think Los Zetas are strategizing to cut the country in half?"
If Los Zetas push into Jalisco, it would make sense for them to complete the line by taking a Pacific port and completing the vertical division. A north-south corridor, from Nuevo Laredo to Manzanillo would afford Los Zetas several important elements:
1. A secure connection from a Pacific port to a US border crossing - ideal for drugs trafficking
2. Separate the Knights Templar from the US border and their friends in the Sinaloa Federation
3. Contain the Sinaloa Federation to the north of their line, where the Sierra Madres west of Durango form a natural barrier to keep them on the Pacific coast.
These points are all important, though number three is the most interesting. I believe that Los Zetas are the number two criminal organization in terms of staying power - a summation of their size, revenue generation, territorial control, and several other, minor details about training, force strength, and political penetration.
The number one group undoubtedly remains the Sinaloa Federation, which Los Zetas can only contain, not destroy. The Zetas Cross theory assumes that Los Zetas seeks to contain the Sinaloa Federation, while isolating the Knights Templar and the Gulf Cartel.
The east-west, horizontal line of the Zetas Cross completes that isolation. Stretching from Tampico, Tamaulipas, and passing west through Ciudad Valles, San Luis Potosí (SLP), Zacatecas, and ending in Durango, the horizontal line of the Zetas Cross, if completed, isolates the operational hub of the Gulf Cartel in Matamoros from the rest of the country.
Currently, I would argue that when considering the points along this horizontal line, Los Zetas do not control Durango - traditionally a stronghold of the Sinaloa Federation. Part of the complication with pushing their forces into the city is the ongoing battle for complete control of the Torreón-Gomez Palacio plaza on the Durango-Coahuila border. Los Zetas continue to battle for control of that plaza. If they win that battle, we would almost certainly watch Los Zetas push their influence south into Durango.
I would argue that Los Zetas have completed approximately 60 % of this cross, give or take about 10 %. Most of the fighting between Los Zetas and the organization's rivals will undoubtedly be at the Zacatecas-Jalisco border. And if Los Zetas break this alliance, we'll see them push into Guadalajara - though not an operation likely initiated until after the Pan American games.
The recently announced Zeta alignment with rogue segments of the Milenio Cartel is interesting because it implies, at least, that Los Zetas have lured defectors to their ranks, possibly improving local knowledge, intelligence gathering, and recruiting capabilities from within rival organizations. This alliance, if true, also grants Los Zetas a small beachhead in Guadalajara, from where the group may be able to attack the united cartels from behind the battle lines drawn in southern Zacatecas…
I'll continue to report on The Zetas Cross as events unfold. As I learn more from colleagues on the ground, I'll focus on some of the points along the cross, including: Monterrey (Saltillo), Tampico, Ciudad Valles, SLP, Zacatecas (Fresnillo), Durango, Aguascalientes, Guadalajara, and Manzanillo.

  1. I dont get it, how do rival cartels invade others territories and take over? Do they come in big caravans and rent hundreds of houses and start shooting everyone up? How does this work? No one ever explains the details, all the info we ever get is vague speculation about rivals somehow taking over turf.

    1. You send at least 20 trucks and just do whatever you can to heat up the plaza murder shootings whatever then the military and policia federal come in and fight the people who run it thinking that it's them and once they start dropping they go in and finish up the job it takes alot of patients pretty similarly to a military invasion as far as homes zetas are poor as far as the soldiers because they have so many men so they usually make camps in the bush but more organized cartels either pay people to rent their homes or kill the people and just take them it's rare for a home to be legally rented or bought because you need to have all te paperwork making sense or te house will be raided or extorted by the police federals and army all wanting $ the Marina are the hardest military to buy not impossible but they usually don't give into criminals because their brotherhood and always being in large #s

  3. wow....by the way this looks, los zetas will completely control the whole eastern part of Mexico and the Southern part and with there alliance with the Juarez cartel and the BLO they will destroy any Chapos people in jalisco and wen that happens they will continue to take over Sinalia since they are already there. than the last fight would be in tijuana than they would most likely stab juarez and beltran in the back and completely run mexico rival free. all under one name. los zetas. i think the Mexican Government are the zetas and this is probly there way to fught the cartels by killing

  6. I read an article on this book when it first came out. There are so many authors and bloggers trying to capitalize on the war by keeping something constantly going. I feel the same about this article as I did when I first heard of the book. Its like they're trying to give them advice and speculate on their strategy at the same time. One day there's articles about how the z are losing ground n forces next day it's about how they are so dominant. Screw the pinche family slaughtering z. No disrespect to BB for this article but I'm just so tired of people continuing to keep the pot stirred up. Truth be known.....z aren't half of what the majority of these people write n talk about they are. IF they were utilizing this strategy a year or two ago when it was first discussed openly online......it sure hasnt worked much. Just yesterday an article came out stating that z were cash strapped and that their top sources of income didn't include narcotics. Each new day brings a new story contradicting the prior days stories. Not since the 70's-80's have the cartels truly operated without serious turf battles n wars. There's just so many media outlets online that keep it going. The so-called cross theory discussed in this book is no where close to as easy as its made to sound. I'm not a cheerleader for either cartel...but I am for sure NOT a z supporter. If half of the people online that post on these sites met real zetas n person they'd feel the same way. Those dudes are WACK jobs. Most are drug addicts that try to be bossy n pushy thinking they run things. And I'm talking about here in the states. I don't care how many z tattoos they have in their necks they'll always be idiots. They can run whatever strategy they want they'll never EVER run MX entirely alone.

    1. If you don't mind me asking, who do you work under specifically? I find it fascinating when people who are actually in the fray so to speak share their opinions on here. Also, was there a single event that made you hate Americans? Do you feel that they look down on Mexico for being a naturally rich third world country oozing with corruption? Is it a systemic dislike of the 'customer' maybe? Do you feel like Americans patronize and make Mexicans in Mexico look lazy and stupid with racist portrayals in the media? Also, why do you think the violence is so bad with seven year olds being slaughtered and no real investigation? Why is it that almost every worker bee for the cartels gets caught or killed and the 30 million peso bigwigs have been virtually untouched save for Arturo etc.? I really would like to see more people in Mexico involved in the fighting post their feelings, thoughts, strategies, threats etc. The tenuous accessibility is one of the things that make this horrible war so fascinating and disturbing from a sociological/psychological perspective. Be safe and Vaya con Dios

  9. The east-west cross is not complete in the first image. It ends in Durango. The natural extension westward from Durango is Mazatlan. That's Sinaloa territory. The new highway over the mountains will make Mazatlan more accessible.

  12. That is a complicated question, but it is not an event of blasting into a territory. First, local authorities, government, and police are "bought" and or threatened. then linking with groups such as sicario groups to handle "business". by the time a group goes into to dispute territory ground work must conclude.

Remember what you see here and other blogs is a tiny percentage of what is happening. If you follow regional news papers for these places you will be shocked seeing how much is happening and where.

I looked around a while ago and saw that in Jalisco 3 convoys were spotted of the zetas each having 8-10 vehicles. However it would be a huge battle and maybe at some point they would hash out a division (the question of cutting Mx in half) between chapo and Zs.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Last year a Zetas convoy tried to capture Florencia in southern Zacatecas but lost that battle to Carteles Unidos. They certainly are trying to push through to Jalisco, but the way things are going with Z-50 supposedly defecting, the Zetas may have to end up being happy just hanging on to Nuevo Laredo

    1. Until the anti-Christ saves the world?! I hope that was a typo. As a Christian myself nothing bothers me more than evangelicals and people who take every word in the Bible literally and use it as an excuse not to make the world better through action. God doesn't want us to sit idle, holding our hands up in helpless indecision.
People who insist that they know the absolute truth and all others who ave other beliefs be damned are the problem, not the solution. As Christians, we should accept the differences of others and not be so haughty to think its our job to change thief beliefs.
As far as the cartels go, it's history repeating itself. We cannot legislate morality and stop people from consuming substances. As long as we do this, we will create more monsters out of otherwise low life criminals, and more non working institutions dependent on the illegality of these products. Drugs need to be legalized...its the only answer.
God wants us to be realistic and responsible for our actions. Pointing our fingers and simply insisting upon ourselves is not enough. Let's not hasten the apocalypse. How about we make the best out of this world? It could be a nice place.

I got news for you Arana. US soldiers have been in mexico for the past 50 years and there is nothing you can do about it. hahaha

  36. Just a theory. Nothing more. It's all sad for Mexico. I hope the Cartels will come to a truce or set and respect boundaries. The Governmenr can make that happen, but they have to be willing to make deals and keep their word. No back stabbing. And the Cartels will have to set vendetta aside. Until that happens the blood shed will continue. Keep the news coming. This is a good to read while sitting on the can.

i am none of what you mentioned and i am still against legalizing. the death and destruction that these drugs bring is unbearable.

Police: N.J. mom decapitated son, put head in freezer before killing herself
The mother had lost custody of Zahree in 2010 after allegedly leaving him unattended in a car while she was blacked out in a nearby park from smoking PCP-laced marijuana, prosecutors told The Associated Press. She reclaimed custody of the child five months ago.
The mother stabbed herself in the neck with a kitchen knife and died, Laughlin said.

  42. I just downloaded the book on Amazon. $20.00 is steap for an Ebook. Please don't tell me how it ends and spoil my surprise! Hope it's as good or better than El Narco or another good one was The Last Naro, or Drug War Zone, or Cartel...... Hopefully there is some new insight or some new opinions besides it's all the US fault, even though we should be blaming Mexico for our drug problem and demand Mexico pay for addiction treatment in the US.

  43. The "drug war" should be called, "the jobs for cops program". That's all it is.

The chaos comes from drugs being ILLEGAL. Certain people are always going to want to get high, no matter what you do. You can't stop it.

Legalizing drugs would drive the cartels out of business. What part don't you understand?

    I have news for you.

Sinaloa is at war with the knights templar.

    The federation no longer exists.

The resistencia has been nearly wiped out. Most defected back to la familia or joined zetas.

Zetas and la familia have joined forces.

  45. Señor no one is trying to scare anyone, I am simply telling the drug addicted ignorant Americans how wrong they are. Why scare through Internet? Todos mundo saba la mafia tiene poder que no? This is business you cannot handle as a gang. As long as people continue to think we are idiots on CIA payroll things will get worse I've made no threats to anyone on here I'm not an Internet warrior I know who I am I'm sick of the shit I see on here I'm sick of people thinking they can understand something or even have an opinion on something they'll never experience. And we're bitches. I'd love to see these American go out on patrol with multiple elements of police and military special forces with air support hunting them. If like to see you wash your brothers blood off of yourself and go back out. America is a large customer so how can you judge? Search your children's rooms see what you find

  47. that chic in new jersey was high on that wet, american made dope. that wet aint no joke son. may that little boy rest in peace , she cut his head off and put it in the frezer .and then made a false police reporet saying her boyfriend did it .dam shame off subject but this for those who bump about legalizing , i'd say learn to be specific not all dope needs to be legalized .ever been to a real crack nieghborhood go to ghetto where the brothas at. not all dope can be legalized. crimerate would really go up and you'd be making the system more money.

  48. Who is your Comandante? You seem to be an educated man. Are you really out running around in the bushes killing people? It would seem that a cartel would have better use for someone with a brain and a bilingual tongue. I'm really curious though...and I don't understand why people are so quick to judge when we spend a good portion of time trying to gain insight. Some of us really want to know details of this whole conflict. As a soldier so to speak on the ground, who do you think is ultimately going to benefit from the current situation?

  49. L E G A L I Z E I T ! ! ! ! !

Its the only way to cut the profit which finances the organization and motivates the people.

And all the dope in the world is soooo easy to get already, legalization wont make it easier.

Mr,i aint got a fuckin clue what you goin on about.
Do you think the US as a whole is always thinkin about Mexico?Thank fuck we are not like Mexico.
You are the most racist people that you come across on here, almost second nature.Do you like being called racist names?Of course not,but you know well enough how often yo see it on here directed at"whitepeole".The reason i replied, was i saw another Mexican whining about the US again, when this is an all too Mexican problem, why do you all persist in dragging the US into your domestic bullshit? It gets old man.

    1. I have to say your partly right. However it's the U. S that is the cause of alot of the trade. They judge us and then do a line and smoke a joint, then think they're government is going to come into our country and exterminate us?? No one understands anything anymore. Alot of the order died with Nacho. I do not hate Americans I'm legally an American and served the US for 6 years in the Marine Corps. I've done more for your country than most people on here. All I'm asking is to realize we are a company not a gang. I don't understand us being judged for killing those who hunt us while your government is blowing up cities in the middle east. With their drones unfairly slaughtering innocent people.murder is murder if you want to judge us please look at your government first is all I ask

  51. Don't legalize it. If it's so easy to get anyways why bother? Death won't stop just because you make it legal. They're stealing fuel, kidnapping people, extorting others, pirating everything they can. Money and control fuel the violence. You vision eutopia where everyone can buy all the dope they want wherever and everything in the world will be perfect. Perfect for dope heads, but not the rest.

"Legalize it" is not a worthy discussion.

You seem an intelligent man,you know what i am speaking of.Anti US boolshit is just that. What has the US got to do with CT toppin 13 dudes?Nothing. You know guey. This is not about the Mexican people, this is about the violence being perpetrated by gangsters.Believe what you will but i do not wish to see any country endure brutality like this with no end in sight.
Senore i also know it takes balls to do what some people do,i am not arguing that with you.It is usually people who have no experience of violence who shout coward on here.So to you i say ten cuidado senore.Keep yo head down.
