Reporting on the Mexican Cartel Drug War

The Most Dangerous Cartel on Earth

*Sinaloa spelled Sinaola and Mata Zeta instead of Mata Zetas

We typically think of Mexican drug cartels operating solely in Latin America and moving drugs into the US. So it came as a surprise when news broke that the Iranian government had plans to hire members of a Mexican drug cartel to carry out an assassination on the Saudi Arabian ambassador in Washington DC.

So who is this Cartel?

They're called Los Zetas.

They began as a group of 31 Mexican Special Forces troops who abandoned their post in the late 90's to defend high ranking members of the Gulf drug cartel. Now they're independent of the Gulf Cartel and have members in the thousands and are the No. 1 organization responsible for the majority of homicides, narcotic-related homicides, beheadings, kidnappings, and the extortions that take place in Mexico.

Their murderous ways have become so prevalent in Mexico that a group seeking vigilante justice has begun targeting members of Los Zeta. The group, Mata Zeta, or the Zeta Killers, recently dumped the tied and beaten bodies of 35 members of Los Zeta on a highway during rush hour in Veracruz.

If you're wondering why you know so little about this cartel, it helps to know that since 2000, 74 journalists have been killed in Mexico, making it difficult for outsiders to receive accurate information.

This week on Around the World Christiane Amanpour looks deeper into Los Zeta and speaks with Navarro Bello, General Director of Zeta Magazine, for perspective on the issue.

Preposterous prepackaged pretext for a preventative pugilistic push against the Persians.

The Iranians want to work with a Texranian and a Mexican Cartel to kill a Saudi in DC?

Does anybody believe this?

The plot thickens. Notice how the US is using the middle east threat and the Mexican government uses drug gangs to seek support. Our governments propaganda is getting very transparent. Calderon is riding this horse till it drops. He will send the military anywhere El Chapo needs it. Looks like we may be using it to go to Iran or to step in from a terrorist perspective and go after the Zetas. Either way, we can't afford it and it will not stop the drug flow. At the very best, it will just change the faces of the major player. One being the CIA. If we go into Mexico, can you imagine what kind of weapons will be floating around when we leave. Damn!!!!

Anonymous said...

Damn she sure showed Chapos ass he may run Mexico but he dont run whatever the fuck her show is called...Not only did she spell Sinaloa wrong she said it wrong and no one bothered to tell her before it was finalized and put on the air...Professional journalism at its finest!!!If she was in high school they'd send her to the Sylvan Learning Center but since shes on CNN she gets her own show smh

Even mamito said in his interview that they only get their coke from guate and panama some way cut down coke all they controll is a few city's to sell their trash z ain't going to last no more than 2 3 more years so called Mexican special forces decerters yea right how many of those are left 2 haha what joke ohh any teta supporters eat maruchan like your buddies

What crap. This site must be working with DEA/CIA to frame Iran. Maybe this site likes a lot dead mexicans with ATF Guns. Keep the people in fear of terror seems to be the objective, while they throw lies around in their fairytale war on drugs.

Stupid journalists! They are dumb, what credibility can they have when they can't even say or spell the very basics. And that young woman, so stupid not to be afraid, I hope she lives in a steel box in a cave under a us military base so she might be able to live a few days longer.

I love this article, maby CHAPO will get jealous and start REALLY cutting Zs down to size.

The fact that they couldn't even get the name of the Sinaloa Cartel right doesn't give much confidence to the quality of the reporting. Especially since the Sinaloa Cartel is not exactly an organization that hasn't seen much news coverage.

We can thank the rise of these peace-loving and charitable gangs to the USA's INCREDIBLY STUPID 'war on drugs.'

As with Prohibition in the 1930's, if they just legalized this stuff, most of the gangs would wither away, with their economic base destroyed.

The journalist from Tijuana English is terrible and embarrassing. ABC could have interviewed a dozen or more qualified, experienced and well spoken journalists. How sad that not even the English reporter could spell Sinaloa right, or even pronounce. Dumbing down of our society. Please don't fall for the propaganda of the Iranian, that is what the US wants you to think. They just need a few more valid reasons to sink us into another war in the Middle East. Remember, Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz.

It was a DEA informant that was contacted by the iranians. The whole thing was orchastrated and set up by the US justice department. I think for once the Zetas are been wrongfully accused. What is wrong with all these reporters having selective hearing. its a shame that ammanpur has done such a terrible article here. I am all for establishing peace and order back in Mexico and the cartels must be destroyed but give me a break. Mexican reporters need to take some resposiblility many of the dead journalist were on the pockets of the cartels.
Is it also a coincidance this story broke just as the three retired generals delivered their assesment funded by the military industrial complex of the border war to congress.

I couldn't get past the pronunciation of Sinnyola. What the heck happened to the fact checkers for such a well traveled and usually well versed reporter. I wonder if all her pronunciations for the mid-east are skewed as well.

Anonymous said...

What are the odds of an Iranian contacting a DEA agent in Mexico?

Anonymous said...

The Zetas are definately more dangerous than the Sinaloa Cartel, just look at the structure of command of Los Zetas, every cell supports themselves financially, giving them more freedom, and giving the boss Lascano less worries if a cell gets killed or captured.

Capo said The journalist from Tijuana English is terrible.

Is this good grammar Capo? ( The journalist from Tijuana English is terrible )

This journalist is from Tijuana, why does she have to speak good English for? Her real work is in Mexico and people in Mexico speak Spanish.

Anonymous said...

Capo have you heard the Spanish from the American journalist?

Capo said...

Sorry to offend anyone, but because I speak and write English and Spanish perfectly, sometimes I expect the same from los de mas. Gueros o Indios. Are we cool?

We are good Capo, is only that I believe this ( The journalist from Tijuana English is terrible ) should be like this ( The English from the Tijuana journalist is terrible ) but we are good. I'm not fighting or arguing with you, I know you are a cool person.

@Oct 15, 4:30AM. There is only 1 real Zeta left, that is Heriberto Lazcano. Miguel Trevino Morales Z 40, has never been a soldier. He did not even join the boys scouts of America. I know him. We live in the same block in Nuevo Laredo. He worked washing the cars and trucks of the Los Texas Gang. Then worked smuggling illegal immigrants to the USA. They were all SINALOAS. He betrayed Los Texas and the Sinaloa Cartel and went to work with the Gulf Cartel. Then he betrayed the Gulf Cartel and joined the Zetas. I wonder how long it will take before he betrays the Zetas or betrays Heriberto Lazcano. That is if he has not done it already!

Anonymous said...

@ Capo, Oct, 15, 5:46 PM. You said that you speak and write English and Spanish perfectly? Then why in hell you wrote ' de mas' when every swinging dick in this forum that speaks Spanish knows that it's spelled ' demas' with accent on the letter 'a'. Thanks.

Anonymous said...

as if Mexicans already do not get bad rep in the USA, now Mexicans AND Iran are joining forces??...this is just another scheme to justify harsh senseless immigration laws on immigrants, specifically MEXICAN immigrants....

LuciferKilla said...

That's true he did betray a ton of people and did start off as a car washer and was a drug addict and you lied his way to get people to think he was a soldier

That clip had awful videography -- the worst I've seen from a major news station.

Christiana, you are unmasked as a pseudo expert. Her producers are no better.

Texcoco said...

LuciferKilla according to this you know about Miguel Angel Trevino, do you know anything about two of his brother getting killed? how, where, and which brothers?.
His brothers were killed a while back and I will like to know a little more about that.

@Tex is brother is Z42 and he has another? And CDG has been known to lie about killing people and most news reporters and experts don't believe a word they say

Her whole team not noticing the mis-spelling is illustrative of how little news orgs and Joe Public really know about this war/invasion on our own soil.

Oh, and attention news guys, it is "Zetas", with a short "E", not ZAtas with a long "A" like I see all you news dorks pronounce it. Makes you look really out of touch. Please educate yourselves.

USA, your country is getting just as infiltrated as Mexico was before this started. A similar "cartel crackdown" in the US may also prove violent and difficult

Sleep on dummies.
