Guardia Nacional Seizes Illegally Chopped Wood In Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, Michoacán

By "El Huaso" for Borderland Beat

The Guardia Nacional located and seized about 100 illegally chopped logs in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, State of Michoacán, according to a press release on August 4. Illegal logging is becoming a major criminal market in Mexico, accounting for 1/3 of wood sales in the nation according to authorities.

They discovered the site when patrolling in the town of Zitácuaro, Michoacán.

The seizure was made by the National Guard in joint effort with the Michoacán State Police, the Environmental Protection Battalion of the National Guard, and the Federal Environmental Prosecutor (PROFEPA by its initials in Spanish).

Upon locating the site, security forces established a perimeter and looked for the loggers, but were unable to find them.

PROFEPA is holding the logs and will undertake the investigation.

Illegal logging is an increasing problem in Mexico, often exploited by criminal groups who illegally fell trees for sale. The nation has lost about 8% of its forest cover in the last two decades, according to NGO GlobalForestWatch.

In an interview with El Financiero, the director of the National Commission of Forests (CONAFUR), León Jorge Castaños Martínez said “It is a very, very serious problem, which has been growing because there is a deficit of wood from national production".

InSight Crime has reported that CJNG, Los Correa, La Familia Michoacána, and Carteles Unidos are all involved in illegal logging in the state.

#LiberenAMireles: Widespread Protest in Support of Dr Mireles

I am pleased to report the support in protest is growing and spreading fast, and not just in Michoacan but many other states and key cities.  They government were clueless to the respect and admiration people have for Dr. Mireles.  I hope he will soon be told.  I have not seen a groundswell like this for anyone in Mexico.  Amazing.  It is difficult to determine what will occur, but based on his subjection to multiple human rights violations, on that alone he should be granted a direct amparo, aside from his innocence.  Below is a photo of a pavilion in Hermosillo Sonora, where a rally was later held.

The Sonora group marched in protest with saved heads and carrying a chicken leg, a nod to Dr Mireles' comment "I was armed with a chicken leg".  He was arrested inside the Happy Chicken resturant.

Thank YOU readers for the outpouring of support and well wishes from you.   As I did the get well wishes after the plane crash, I will save the comments and present them to Doc Mireles when I am able to.
There is a  campaign to demonstrate support of Dr Mireles by shaving ones head.  Many people including his female attorney have done so.  Here is a congressman from Veracruz, followed by Talia (atty), a man in Spain and one other foto.
anonymous video.  I am posting it because of the information provided in the video with links to more.

Dear brothers, as I have noticed it has become a custom for the Mexican government to repress the people in different ways.

Therefore we demand in this statement for the immediate release of political prisoner: Dr. José Manuel Mireles, and so we also repudiate what circulating in some media.

He is behind bars for having crossed the laws in defense of a people that the government of Mexico has not been able to defend. The State has left the helpless citizens subjected to the violence in Mexico by organized crime and corruption by the government itself.

His name is Jose Manuel Mireles Valverde, community leader of autodefensas in state of Michoacán. Best known as "Doctor Mireles" was arrested last Friday June 27, 2014 in the town of Acalpican holding of La Mira, municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas.

His arrest is considered a political distraction used by the government to proceed with the reforms that affect the people.

And who is directly responsible for this injustice?

The answer is: Alfredo Castillo Cervantes, and now we explain who this person is.

During the presidency of Vicente Fox, he was advisor to the Deputy Criminal Procedure Do you remember the explosion at the PEMEX TOWER?  You know who investigated?

That's right: Alfredo Castillo Cervantes ...

In 2010 Enrique Peña Nieto appointed him procurator of the entity, replacing Alberto Bazbaz, who resigned from that position, after the case of the disappearance and death of  4 year old girl named Paulette, who  girl was found nine days later, strangled and wrapped in blankets jammed into the footboard of her bed. (the wealthy mother was not charged, more below)

When Enrique Peña Nieto took the presidency,  Castillo was commissioned to arrest any individual who will challenge the federal government.

Currently- is the Commissioner for Security and Integral Development of Michoacán.

Returning to the Mireles case:
At the time of his arrest, police stated that he was armed. This is where irregularities begin, because several witnesses claim that the only thing Dr. Mireles was in possession of, was a chicken leg, as he  was in a restaurant.

Although Commissioner Castillo said Dr. Mireles has not hooded when arrested, there are multiple images and videos that reflect Mireles  being hooded when arrested.

Alleged Caballeros Templarios Shoot at Police In Morelia

By: Camila Luna

During the early hours of Friday, a group of armed civilians attacked the facilities of the Citizen Protection of the Attorney General of the State (Centro de Protección Ciudadana de la Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado) in the west of the Michoacán capital.

According to police reports, it was around 4:00 am when two trucks filled with heavily armed men arrived at the Center for Citizen Protection belonging to the Attorney General of Justice of Michoacán, located between avenues Francisco I. Madero and Pedregal.

After getting out of the vehicles, the criminals shot up the building leaving one policeman injured (who was reported as stable) and severe damage to the building structures and the facility located beside it, as well as damaging six police vehicles.

Within the Center for Citizen Protection, there were a dozen ministerial policemen who tried to repel the attack, however, the criminals fled.

After initial investigations were carried out, about 100 shell casings from AK-47’s, 7.62x39mm, and AR-15’s, .223, were found at the scene.

Almost simultaneously, a second attack on a base of the Municipal Public Security located in the north of Morelia near Estadio Morelos was also recorded.

Hipólito Mora Escorted By Federal Police

 Update
The armed group accuses Hipólito of having ordered the murder of one of the operators of the armed movement, identified as Rafael Sánchez Moreno, "El Pollo".
The spokesperson for the self-defense groups of Buenavista Tomatlán, Hipólito Mora, left the ranch Los Palmares via helicopter after at least 400 members of another self-defense group demanded him to be removed from his position this afternoon.

Led by “El Americano”, the group is located 300 meters away from the ranch where those close to the spokesperson of Buenavista Tomatlán barricaded themselves in.

The ultimatum is for them to leave the ranch or else be disarmed; although Hipólito Mora left the ranch in a helicopter bound for the Federal District.

Federal Police arrived at the scene trying to calm the crowd, which was gradually approaching the ranch.

“How are we going to disarm, assholes.  How are we going to disarm when they’re sending pure templarios, they’re going to kill us, go fuck you moms”, said a member of the self-defense groups of Hipólito Mora.

At the entrance of the ranch, there were women armed with sticks and machetes.

After about 20:00 hours, Mora was escorted from the municipality via a Federal Police helicopter.

Hipólito Mora said that he didn’t want to face Luis Antonio Torres González “El Americano” because there are still good people with him who have been manipulated.

He also noted that on March 8, 2014 Rafael Sánchez Moreno “El Pollo” was killed.  He had also infiltrated the self-defense groups, when everyone knew that he was the right hand man of Nazario Moreno, El Chayo.  “Those who besieged La Ruana are people of El Chayo, La Tuta, and El Chango Méndez.”
