Bad guys hit newspaper office in Nuevo Laredo with grenades

A newspaper office was attacked with small arms and hand grenades last Friday night in the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas state, according to Mexican news and Twitter accounts.
According to a web posting Sunday morning by El Universal news daily, the offices of El Manana was attacked at around 2300 hrs Friday by armed suspects. The firing last five minutes.
No one was reported hurt in the attack and damage was limited to the walls of the building and nearby parked cars. The armed suspects committing the attack then left a blanket painted with a message, the contents of which were not disclosed in news accounts.
Blankets painted with messages are colloquially known as narcopintas or narcomantas, depending on the area of Mexico they are found. The contents are often claims and threats, which in most cases are not considered credible. However, those messages are the drug cartels' most effective means of mass communication with the broader citizenry.
Nuevo Laredo is in the grip of a deadly competition between Los Zetas drug gang, of which Nuevo Laredo is considered to be their home turf and the Sinaloa and Gulf cartels, which have vowed to end Los Zetas' dominance in the city.

Bad guys hit cop shop with grenade in Nuevo Laredo

Drug and gang related violence in Nuevo Laredo started its fourth day Tuesday morning with a grenade attack against municipal police station, according to Mexican news accounts.
The attack took place at about 0800 hrs near the Nuevo Laredo municipal police station near the intersection of Avenida Avila Camacho and the Anahuac highay. One unidentified civilian was wounded, one car was immolated and another was damaged by the blast. The explosion was heard as far away as seven kilometers.
Reports also say another shootout took place between armed suspects and a Mexican Army unit later that morning in an area in western Nuevo Laredo called Santa Fe.
The Tamaulipas state Fiscalia General del Estado or attorney general told foreign press agencies that the two Monday afternoon shootouts between Mexican Army units and armed suspects killed seven unidentified armed suspects.

Mexican federal government agencies do not release news to the public due to a clamp on government propaganda as outlined by Article 41 of the Mexican Constitution which forbids dissemination. That ban is expected to be lifted the day after the presidential election July 1st.
Reports also say that the four international bridges were apparently unaffected by Tuesday's attacks.

April 12th Mayhem in Monterrey: Grenade attack on Guadalupe city hall

A grenade was detonated near Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon city hall, and only a few meters from a school Wednesday, according to Mexican news accounts.
The attack took place near the intersection of calles Hidalgo and Zaragoza in Zona Centro. No one was reported hurt and damage was limited to broken glass in the José Eleuterio Gonzalez school, three residences and parked vehicles in the area.
Guadalupe suffered a violent incident the day before when a total of eight taxi drivers were shot to death by armed suspects near Cerro de Silla.
In related news, Mexican security forces in and around Monterrey have conducted several counternarcotics operations which killed two suspects and resulted in the detention of dozens more suspects.

- Operatives with the Nuevo Leon Agencia Estatal de Investigaciones (AEI) raided a safe house in Juarez, Nuevo Leon Wednesday killing two armed suspects and detaining nine. Agents were dispatched to the location near the intersection of calles Getafe and Barcelona in Praderas de San Juan colony based on a tip concerning illegal activity when they were met with gunfire. Return gunfire by police agents killed two armed suspects. A third armed suspect surrendered.
- An hour later the same operatives with the Nuevo Leon Agencia Estatal de Investigaciones (AEI) raided a second safe house in Juarez, detaining 12 suspects. The raid took place near the intersection of calle Mina Grande and San Miguel in Urbi Villa colony, where police agents seized a stolen vehicle. Reports are Nuevo Leon state police agents and Mexican Army units are scouring around Juarez in search of mass graves, colloquially known as narcofosas.
- A Mexican Army road patrol detained four armed suspects in a traffic stop in China, Nuevo Leon Wednesday. The patrol found several rifles aboard the vehicle soldiers searched. Detained were Juan Sanchez Garcia, AKA El Tuercas, 19, Jorge Alberto Treviño Perez, AKA La Marrana, 18, José Eduardo Castillo Rodriguez AKA El Núñez, 25 and Juan Carlos Hernandez Cabello. AKA El Pelón 19.
- Also in China, two armed suspects were detained in China in an apparent traffic stop in Rafael Buelna colony, who were travelling aboard a vehicle which had been reported as stolen. A search of the vehicle turned up military uniforms and quantities of drugs. The detainees were identified as José Manuel García, AKA El Pelon, 22 and Omar Cantu Martinez, 24.
- Five armed suspects were detained following an exchange of gunfire with Mexican security forces in Monterrey Wednesday. Elements of the Agencia Estatal de Investigaciones (AEI) and Mexican Army had been conducting an operation on Avenida Pablo A. de la Garza in the Moderna colony when the police came under small arms fire. Return fire provided by Mexican Army elements ended the battle. The detainees were identified as Guillermo Martinez Velasco, Juan José Martinez Ayala, Noe de la Cruz, Luis Manuel Martinez and on unidentified minor.
- An unidentified man was found tortured and shot to death in Santiago, 20 kilomters south of Monterrey Wednesday. The victim was found near Zona Comerical Los Cabazos hands bound, about 100 meters from the National Highway.

1 wounded in three grenade attacks in Tamaulipas

One unidentified individuals was wounded three in separate grenade attacks in Matamoros and Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas Sunday night and Monday morning, according to Mexican news and Twitter reports.
Originally, those reports said five had been hurt, but an announcement by the Tamaulipas state Procuraduria General de Justicia or attorney general posted on the state website Monday night said only one had been wounded.
Sunday night's attack took place near the Televisa television studios in Matamoros. That attack took place around 2200 hrs EDT near the intersection of avenidas Manuel Cavazos Lerma and Fresnos in Paseo Residencial colony. The detonation caused no injuries or damage.
In Ciudad Victoria, one grenade was detonated in a vacant lot near the intersection of calles 9th and Coahuila in San José colony at around 0950 hrs. No damage or persons wounded were reported in that attack.
A second grenade attack took place at a car dealership near the intersection of calles 9th and Berriozabal, presumably near Zona Centro. One individual was wounded in that attack. Some unspecified damage has been reported.
The attack took place at about 1020 hrs EDT. The attorney general report said that explosions accompanied the detonation of the grenade, which usually means small arms fire.
Several attacks using grenades and small arms fire were initiated over the last two weeks in Ciudad Victoria. The most serious, on March 14th took the lives of four individuals.
News reports say the Tamaulipas state Secretaria de Seguridad Publica and Procuraduria General de Justicia revealed those March 14th attacks were part of an intergang gunfight between rival criminal groups.
At least seven grenade and small arms attacks have been made in Ciudad Victoria alone since March 14th, nearly all of them between rival criminal groups. At least five have been killed and many more have been wounded in these encounters.

Car bomb explodes in Ciudad Victoria

A car bomb exploded in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas Monday afternoon, according to Mexican news accounts.
Ciudad Victoria is the state capital of Tamaulipas.
The bomb was set in front of the offices of Expreso newspaper on Bulevar Adolfo Lopez Mateos in Almendros colony.
No one was reported hurt in the blast.
A kindergarten and a grocery store are also located nearby but were not affected by the explosion. Damage was limited to workshops in the building. Five vehicles parked nearby were also damaged by the explosion.
Several grenade attacks have been made in Ciudad Victoria in the last few days.
The latest took place Saturday night near the Ciudad Victoria city hall near the intersection of calles Morelos and Hidalgo in Zona Centro. Armed suspects aboard a sedan reportedly threw the grenade.
No one was reported hurt in that attack.
Last Wednesday, several grenade attacks were made against a car dealership and a police academy building in Ciudad Victoria. One unidentified individual was killed in those attacks and another two were wounded.
Those attacks took place around the same time as two other small arms attacks in the city which killed two and wounded one.

Grenade hurled at office of Mexican newspaper

No one was hurt when an assailant in a passing vehicle hurled a grenade at a bureau of El Norte newspaper in the northern Mexican metropolis of Monterrey.
"The grenade detonated in a window box located 3 meters (10 feet) from the main door of the installation, causing damage only to two windows," the daily said on its Web page.
Soldiers and police moved quickly to cordon off the area after the blast, El Norte said, noting that Thursday night's attack was the third on the same bureau since last September.
Neither of the two earlier assaults caused any casualties.
Conflict among rival cartels and between criminals and the security forces have claimed some 35,000 lives in Mexico since December 2006, when newly inaugurated President Felipe Calderon militarized the struggle against the drug trade.
Until last year, however, drug-war mayhem was comparatively rare in Greater Monterrey, home to more than 4 million people and the headquarters of many of Mexico's leading corporations.
The city and the surrounding state of Nuevo Leon are now a main battleground in a vicious turf batter between the Gulf and Los Zetas drug cartels.
The cartels often target media outlets and individual journalists, and routinely resort to threats and bribery to influence press coverage of their activities.
Nine reporters were killed last year in Mexico and four went missing, while 64 journalists filed complaints with the National Human Rights Commission, Mexico's equivalent of an ombudsman's office, over attacks and aggressions.
The commission says 66 journalists have been slain in Mexico since 2000 and the vast majority of those murders remain unsolved.
