Federal court judge Laura Gutiérrez de Velazco Romo refused to unfreeze the bank accounts of former Mexican Federal Police chief Ramón Eduardo Pequeño García, one of the men when linked to former Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) chief Genardo Garcia Luna. Garcia Luna is imprisoned in the U.S. for multiple drug-related charges.

Pequeño Garcia's accounts were frozen by Mexico's Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) in July 2020 after he was accused by the U.S. government of receiving bribery payments from the Sinaloa Cartel. The accusation and financial sanctions also extended to his associate José Luis Cárdenas Palomino.

Both Cárdenas Palomino and Pequeño García held key positions in the Mexico's police structures throughout three presidential administrations. They were responsible for leading the entire security apparatus of the Mexican Federal Police, including sensitive intelligence efforts between the U.S. and Mexico.

During their tenure they were decorated agents in Mexico, but according to U.S. officials, they collaborated for years with the Sinaloa Cartel to facilitate their drug trafficking operations. The accusations against Pequeño Garcia are a result of years of investigation by U.S. officials. The idea is that Pequeño Garcia is faces trial in the U.S. and testifies against his former boss, Garcia Luna.

Pequeño Garcia does not have an arrest warrant in Mexico and is currently a free man. He works as an advisor to the head of SSP, Alfonso Durazo Montaño.

Mexico's Attorney General's Office (FGR) is currently investigating Pequeño García's organized crime links. The agency noted that his investigation has been progressing.

"Once all the information we have is legally obtained and authorized by judges, we will proceed with a judicial action," the FGR said in a statement.

  1. Looks like Garcia Luna is being set up to take the blame and serve as an example. This might be the closest thing to "justice" mexicans are going to get... Hopefully Luna drags former presidents down with him.
