Mexican soldiers secure
a tourist area after gunmen attacked a hotel where federal police stay in

At least two armed
attacks were reported on Sunday night in a similar manner against a hotel
where federal agents stay and towards the offices of the federal police
(PF). They unleashed a wave of shootouts
in different parts of the port of Acapulco that caused panic and terror amongst
citizens.
The shootouts lasted
for more than two hours along the main tourist route, along Avenida Costera Miguel Alemán (Coastal
Avenue Miguel Alemán), where dozens of people were trapped in shopping centers,
stores, and restaurants.
However, the federal
police, through its official Twitter account, downplayed the events when they
informed at 23:10 hours: “In #Acapulco an incident left an alleged suspect
dead. Situation under control and without
danger to citizens”.
Nevertheless, official
reports indicate that around 21:53 hours, an armed attack occurred against Hotel
Alba Suites,
located in the division Las Playas in the traditional area of the
port where the federal police is staying.
Then, the uniformed repelled the
attack, taking down an alleged suspect and beginning a chase that lasted
throughout several streets.
In a similar manner, another
armed group attacked the offices of the federal police base located in a
building marked with the numbers 125 along the coastal avenue in the golden
area of Acapulco.
In both attacks, only one agent
was reported with minor injuries and one alleged suspect dead, official reports
indicate.
The shootouts generated by the persecution
against the gunmen were reported along the coast which closed traffic at
various points, in neighborhoods such as Bocamar, La Laja and Progreso, all
located in the heart of the urban area of Acapulco.
The attacks against the federal
police and the shootouts registered last night, occur after the arrest of the
alleged leader of a faction of the Cártel Independiente de Acapulco (CIDA) (Independent
Cartel of Acapulco), Fredy Del Valle Berdel, aka “El Burro”, who was captured
Saturday in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur.
So far, no state and municipal
authorities have set a position on this events that show the failure of the
security strategy to try to reverse the effects of drug violence in the main
tourist destination of the state.
In contrast, the PRI governor Héctor
Astudillo, who had first asked reporters to take a pact of silence in regards to drug violence, and then stated that the closing of shops in Acapulco is due
to them providing bad service, announced that he would be present this morning
at the Tianguis Turístico Internacional (International Tourism Expo)
that was held at Guadalajara, Jalisco.

Mexico with all it's criminals and corrupt politicians still has a big group of gringos buying and fixing haciendas and many more gringos who buy properties by the sea in many more tourist destinations. In some beach places houses go from $250,000 to millions of dollars thanks to the gringos who have decided to buy here. How many times have you heard of gringos to be killed in Mexico? Not that many. Have you seen the news in the USA? Is not that safe either.

DeleteIn reality, Mexico is a safe as the USA statistically. USA has on average 33,000 gun deaths per year, every year. That annual death toll, is as high as Mexico was at its peak in 2010.
DeleteIts simply a question of perception. As a Caucasian, I could walk into any crip neighbourhood at night, there is a good chance I would be mugged or maybe killed, probably the same if I went into a Florencia 13 barrio.
USA has just as many dangerous places as Mexico, but my safety in either country is a factor of a) do I look like a victim, and b) don't be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Please add to the 22,000 in US "officially" murdered the 34,000 "gun accidents" + 18,000 death by legal and illegal substance - EVERY YEAR!, then we can talk about how Acapulco became the Mexican Chicago ...

I always had a bad vibe in Acapulco and for many years. To me the people are not as friendly as in other tourist destinations. Puerto Vallarta has always been one of the friendliest destinations in Mexico as far as I am concerned. Cancun is also friendly. Not many gringo's here in Chihuahua, but they are treated extremely well here. Just not a great tourist destination unless you want to go to the many people attractions in the Sierra's and other areas. The only problem with that is it is a gable to head into the mountains.
ReplyDeleteThey always say tourists are not killed, but 1., there's nearly no tourists there aside from holiday weekends when Mexico City empties into Acapulco and 2. that's BS because if you do enough reading and following of Acapulco, often innocents are getting caught in the crossfire...One in front of Walmart grazed by a bullit and one killed at Tabares II strip bar. I reckon the number of Mexican tourists killed don't reach US news. Again, you can go there now and anytime during the week, you will find 10-20% occupancy at best at the hotels. Restaurants are empty....Most bars are closed during the week and all discos are closed during the week. I've traveled to Acapulco for 2 decades and have watched it's decline painfully over the past decade. Though nothing bad has happened to me, your a sitting duck walking around at night alone....All you see is military and armed police everywhere....IMO, it's like a ghetto, but with a nice view in many ways. Much of the main drag has gone downhill. It's sad because the people are pretty cool in general and the view and weather can't be beat, but you can't predict when bullets will fly. The businesses have no clue about customer service. In other Mexican resort cities, customer service is top priority. I wouldn't trash all of Mexico based on the bad situation in Acapulco. I honestly do NOT see things getting better there for many years if at all. The majority of gringos you see there, are not the big spending type...they are cheaper than free lunch Canadians and a handfull of Americans that are holding on to the memories. You can still have fun there, but week nights are going to be boring as hell.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update on Acapulco.When I drove through there back in the late 80's it was rundown even then.You could see there was once grand hotels that were 5 star probably from the grand days of the 60's when Acapulco was on the world map along with St. Tropaz and southern Europe but you could say the same of San Blas,Nayarit unless it's changed since the 80's.I did notice driving throughout Guerrero back in late 80's it was a heavy militarized state compared to the other 16 states of Mexico I drove through.My friend is a travel agent and she says almost no one goes to Acapulco compared to Cancun and Los Cabos,she says only Italtians maybe from remnants of the Italian Mafia that used to go there or had ties there at 1 time.Yes Canadians are a conservative bunch moneywise,Europeans even more so because of their many weeks of holidays.Too bad about Acapulco it is a pretty place.

At Alba Suites, Where the Federals were shot at, they have been camped out for months( for free).In another story there was mention of envelopes of cash that were recovered at the crime scene. It is possible that the police/politicians are connected to all the extortions going on. For me this is a more plausible story. People in Acapulco are tired.
Did you see that cartel leader with his imitation Polo shirt? Every few months I read something about the leader of independant cartel de Acapulco being captured so who's actually the leader? Anyway, this guy they supposedly arrested...It's hard to believe that he's running organized crime. I know you can't judge a book by it's cover, but common...look at this mess.
