Extortions in Veracruz: Sell Drugs or Lose Your Life

By: Evelia, Animal Político Reader | Translated by Valor for Borderland Beat

My name is Evelia, a native of Cuautla, Morelos, a journalist and a mother of a 7 year old.

The story that I have that is linked to violence and organized crime is death, or rather the assassination of my husband in the city of Xalapa, Veracruz.

My husband was from that city and in 2008, he had an internet business in Unidad Habitacional Pomona (Pomona Housing Unit).  There, he was visited by some guys who had proposed to him to lend him his place to distribute drugs and in exchange, he would receive around 30,000 pesos ($1,716 USD) a month.  I remember the presence and domination of Los Zetas then.

My husband refused.

The months passed by until on a December 22, 2008, he left the house and that was the last time I saw him alive.  His lifeless body was found in a spot along the Xalapa-Veracruz highway, in the village of Rancho Nuevo.  From the way they found his body, it was concluded that he was tortured and beaten.

They snatched a member of my family.  They took away my peace; I had to quit my job as a journalist.

And from that year, I returned to my land, Morelos.

  1. Look on the bright side if there is one. At least they gave him a choice. Mexico is a different world and it seems to me in order to survive you have to adapt. It appears that no area or state is exempt from narco pressure. I guess that's why so many people were willing to work for Chapo because CDS was the lesser of the "evils" out there. A cartel for the people is what they called the federation at its humble beginnings. In reality there is no cartel for the people and never was.

    1. They didn't give him a choice.[Get with the program or die].What choice?

    2. What was the choice again. Once in his office they would have made it impossible to live. If the place was taken down by police he could have gone to prison for distributing drugs. In hindsight the best choice would to have packed up an left quickly. To let the devil into your place would not have been a real option.

Even obeying the law and being honest gets Mexican citizens killed. It's no win situation and Satan's happy.

  12. Punk bullies preying on the innocent and weak. There needs to be a form of sicarios, that are not from and don't live in Mexico, hired to get rid of all these rapist, extortionist and bullies. Make Mexico safe again! If you are involved in any of that expect a visit!
