La Barbie enters a plea of "Not Guilty" in Atlanta

Lucio R. Borderland Beat material for historical reporting from BB archives
Edgar Valdez Villarreal, alias "The Barbie", pleaded not guilty of charges of drug trafficking and money laundering, in an appearance before at the United States Courthouse,  75 Spring Street, S.W.. Atlanta, Georgia

He was transferred to Bexar County, before the hearing.

Valdez Villarreal appeared before federal judge Hon. William Simon. Duffey Jr.,  along with his father in law, Carlos Montemayor González, one of his alleged accomplices, who was arrested and then extradited with Valdez.

In the brief hearing on Friday, judge Duffey ordered the men held without bail.

Valdez was extradited, with 12 others, from Mexico to the United States on September 30th.
The 42 year old Valdez has charges he must face in multiple federal.  In the Georgia federal district he and five others are accused of distributions of tons of cocaine to the Eastern United States between the years of 2004 and 2006. In the eastern district of Louisiana he faces charges stemming from a 2002 indictment.

Valdez was arrested in Mexico on August 30, 2010 and has been detained in Altiplano No1 prison in the state of Mexico since that date, fighting extradition.  His last appeal was struck down over a year ago, but Mexico did not release him for extradition until September.

Valdez is known as the American achieving the highest status within a Mexican cartel.

Valdez' notorious acts of violence

While in Mexico Valdez became notorious for some of the most gruesome acts of violence.

Those who knew him and later ended up sitting on a bench facing prosecutors of SIEDO,  gave information that sicarios under the leadership of Valdez  conducted routine executions of innocent people without hesitation, including  24 farmers and masons from La Marquesa.

In 2006, Mateo Díaz López, a former military and a commander for Los Zetas, was arrested and told SIEDO that "La Barbie" was responsible for filming the execution of four sicarios. This video was sent to The Dallas Morning News on December 1, 2005.

"I know that that the Preventive Police and the AFIs abducted nine members of my group (Zetas) in a nightclub in Zihuatanejo, these men were in that city in order to fight for control of the plaza.”

"Once abducted, they took them to the city of Acapulco and there, they delivered the men to "La Barbie," who later released a video in which four of the men are seen being interviewed.  Among them were "El Peterete," Vizcarra, and another man that I don't remember his alias. On the video these men said many things about Los Zetas," said Mateo Díaz on July 17, 2006.

According to Mateo during the interrogation, "La Barbie" forced the gunmen to say that Osiel was receiving protection from Santiago Vasconcelos, then head of SIEDO, with full intention to discredit him.

After interrogators, who are never revealed,  (one is alleged to be "La Barbie") question the men, the video ends when a pistol enters the frame and shoots this man believed to be Vizcarra in the head (at left).

"In the video itself one can hear the voice of "La Barbie" directing the men on what to say and one of the persons shown is executed and turns out to be Vizcarra. Later on I learned that they had also executed all of the rest of the men and their bodies disappeared. Also in this video my companions say that the attorney Vasconcelos was involved with us (Zetas), which is not true, as this was only a strategy of "La Barbie"' to force the PGR to go after us," said Mateo Díaz

Below is the video warning it does show footage of Vizcarra being executed.

    2. He was transferred from Bexar county TX jail (San Antonio) to the US District Court for the Northern District of GA, based in Atlanta. That's all. There is no Bexar County GA.

    3. After a person is found guilty , during the sentencing phase , I believe a persons reputation and "hearsay" from reliable sources can be presented . I would certainty hope a person to be of the character of "La Barbie" wouldn't be turned lose after a slap on his hand .Bet that's why he is toten his bible . Wants to show how he is a changed man . Probably isnt repenting to god , just justifying to him . Poor old Barbie In the US a person can be convicted of murder if he can be proven to have sold drugs that resulted in someone's death .Anybody moving that much has almost certainly done that . I think the penal codes should be revised and it should be based on aggregation instead of proven results.

    4. The U.S. would not have extradited him if they could not build a case and or plea him down but I can't think of any high profile cartel leader that he can inform on that is still alive or in U.S. custody.

  2. I'm not a stranger to violence, I can also appreciate that the "Barbie" video is posted on BB, but can't watch it, because the visuals and the audio will never leave me. Just going by the article itself, I have to say I think Barbie should remain in incarcerated for the rest of his days. He qualifies as a mass murder, why should he ever be released from prison?

    3. 9:36 AM, So, if he serves out a sentence of some sort in the US, he then gets returned to Mexico to stand trial for murders?

    1. They can't execute these men because of the type of crime that they are being prosecuted for, which often involves drugs. But with that said imagine that people weren't afforded excuses, example: "I grew up with no opportunities", often i find myself thinking why not execute "lifers"or those who spend their life in and out of correctional facilities. What the hell are we doing filling warehouses with scum, when we can do to these men, and women, what the executioner did to the man in the video. This would send a clear message, as well as save time and money. But then again their family members would appear on television crying, informing us that they were good people that just needed one more chance...you've heard and lived the cycle...

  4. Maybe Barbie can talk his sentence down . Its a shame for a fine young man to die of old age in prison . Maybe in 40 or 50 years they will set him free . By that time he will have studied his bible pretty well and will understand why he is going to hell .

  6. If they do make deal with this POS he is going to get life without parole in SuperMax regardless of the info he gives. Saves him from a death penalty, federal judges do not excuse executions and in fact enhance since he made videos. Hopefully someone kills his scum ass while incarcerated. We do not need scum like him to be able to live. His immediate family needs to be sentenced to death as accessories. He is trying to live by snitching but if the USA can get any...any death penalty case on him that is what they will go for. Cooperation will be live in solitary Super Max USA. DEA wants to kill this POS for what he has done and cooperation will only be LIFE without parole.

They should prove to us good ole American citizens that the justice system really works and try every president of the United states with mass murder every general of military rank with mass murder and every us corporation with rape and robbery of human resources that forces other nations citizens to have to resort to a sub human way of life. Or better yet take away all bombs and long range weaponry and forcr those same groups of people to take those same resources by hand MAN TO MAN and see the outcome that follows. Wont be the same good ole America! La Barbie should be kicked in the ass for imitating real killers who annihilate nations of people.

    3. @11:03 PM, This thinking makes more sense than some other ideas going around. I wonder, tho, how the legal dance goes for a US citizen extradited from Mexico to USA in respect to the death penalty uses contained in the Kingpins Act as well as under US Terror laws. La Barbie best hope the death penalty is taken off the table or he could well get strapped to it. IF "Chapo Snitched," then, there's not much more to know, is there! What could a stone cold freak like la Barbie possibly add to the world's número uno drug lord's already shared intel? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

    4. It's true, he has really no gain from his play. Minimum he will get will be an offer of life without parole. The videos and taped conversations of hits is a no brainer for the federal justice here, that is an automatic life enhancement. He's done now for good, so maybe he should just ask for a lethal injection. LOL

The old school ways of doing things was over. They all lost their own morality because before you could be a drug trafficker but not necessarily a murderer. Yes even a drug trafficker had morality back then! There were things they would not do, a line they were not willing to cross! That line has been obliterated thanks in part to this MF that took the first step in crossing it! May he rot in hell!
