Mexico says 2012 attack on US Embassy vehicle was a "Crass" error

So if it was an error, why are fed police on trial?

A 2012 incident in which Mexican federal police raked an armored U.S. Embassy vehicle with gunfire was the result of a “crass error” in judgment by the officers but was not an ambush ordered by organized crime, the nation’s top security czar said Wednesday.

In the Aug. 24, 2012, incident, federal police attacked a U.S. Embassy vehicle, riddling it with at least 152 rounds of assault weapons fire in what U.S. diplomats later termed an “ambush.”

The attack occurred along a mountain road southwest of the capital.

Speaking with foreign reporters, National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido said the jailing of 14 former federal police following the incident was proof that Mexico did not sweep the shooting under the rug.

Rubido said the federal police in unmarked cars were patrolling an area near the hamlet of Tres Marias, where they had broken up a kidnapping ring a day earlier.
“Suddenly they saw a vehicle with characteristics unusual for that region. They ordered it to stop. They were not in uniform because they were conducting an investigation,” Rubido said.

“When the driver of the vehicle saw that armed people were ordering him to halt, he fled. But in a crass error, a crass error, the police began to shoot at the vehicle assuming that criminals were inside,” Rubido said.

Inside were two U.S. officials, identified in U.S. and Mexican media reports as CIA employees, and a Mexican naval officer. All three men were injured in the attack. A separate unit of federal police arrived to defend the victims. The two Americans were hastily evacuated from Mexico.

Rubido acknowledged that suspicions arose that the federal police unit was working for organized crime active in mountainous Morelos state, known for drug trafficking and kidnapping groups.

“A deep investigation was conducted into why the police acted this way,” Rubido said, and “the overwhelming conclusion” was that the federal police were not linked to any organized crime group.
Since the police used what Rubido termed as “excessive force,” the men are now in jail awaiting trial on that charge. None have yet been convicted, he said.

“There are 14 police in prison, so you can see that there is no type of tolerance for this,” Rubido said.
A U.S. Embassy spokesman offered no immediate response to Rubido’s remarks on the 2012 incident.

Since 2008, U.S.-Mexican cooperation on anti-narcotics matters has soared, and multiple U.S. agencies help fight crime here under the Merida Initiative, an unprecedented partnership in which the U.S. Congress has appropriated $2.1 billion.

Some of the money goes to programs that vet federal police for honesty through periodic polygraph exams and probes into their character.

The government of President Enrique Pena Nieto has chalked up numerous victories against crime gangs since taking power in late 2012, including the Feb. 22 capture of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, head of the Sinaloa Cartel and widely considered one of the world’s biggest drug lords

  2. The operatives were ARMED. The "Naval: officer said "You better not get caught carrying firearms" so the driver gunned it despite the fact that the SSP officers were holding up badges. Who are these people trying to shit? It wasn't a sailor with Laurel And Hardy, it was a Marina de Armada de Mexico, a Mexican MARINE. Someone has a serious case of the stupids on this. Mexico does not want to lose the tens of millions of dollars in funding so they send the federal cops to the top of the pyramid to get their hearts ripped out.

  5. Bull.... Shiiit report, it was corrupt Feds working with remnants of BLO who control that area that planned and executed the attack. This liar report shows the BLO still has strong ties within the Mex Fed Govt.

    1. You obviously don't understand this is a fabricated report, the whole point of this article is to make you ask questions. The police were after the car for a reason, it was not a mistake.

    2. No, I do understand that the official story is false. I was referring to the occupants of the vehicle NOT being killed, which I assume was the objective of the ambush.

  8. I am not sure where the expanded cooperation is coming from, the Mexican Govt. has reduced the number of US Agents of any type by I understand 1/2. The CIA may not have been effected, there is still a love hate relationship going on there, I am not sure of, but it seems to still work for them.

  9. “There are 14 police in prison, so you can see that there is no type of tolerance for this,”... looks like the 14 Federal Police are the organized crime group that conduct kidnappings and KILLINGS... so there really isn't any connection between the Mex Fed POLICIA and criminals... since the Fed group of 14 policia officers are the criminals.

  11. c-I-a are known to kidnap people around the world.
At least one of their kidnapping planes crashed in Qintana roo with a ton of cocaine!
Could be they were on a black-ops kidnap mission as people were disappearing in the area.

    1. Hahaha...you said vile...do you even know the definition if vile without looking it up? The CIA does "kidnap" terrorist and enemies of the US but it's a necessary evil. The Mexican Marina were involved so it couldn't be that vile of a mission. It's obvious they were there to assist the Marina with something.

  12. The detention of fugitive CIA agent Robert ‘Mr. Bob’ Lady—convicted for the abduction of a terror suspect from a street in Milan—could lead to strained diplomatic ties between the U.S. and Italy. When CIA agent Robert Seldon Lady devised the plan to swoop Egyptian cleric Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr, better known as Abu Omar, off a Milan street on a chilly February morning in 2003, he says he was just following orders from his American bosses. “Of course it was an illegal operation,” Lady told Italy’s Il Giornale newspaper at the time. “But that’s our job."Abu Omar, who was on an American terrorist suspect watch list, was on his way to morning prayers at his mosque that fateful day. He was jumped in broad daylight and thrown into the back of a van and driven to a NATO airbase in Aviano, Italy, from which he was flown on a Learjet to another NATO base in Germany en route to Cairo. There he was tortured for 12 hours a day for seven months, according to his testimony from Amnesty international. The case exposed the rather unsavory practice of “extraordinary rendition” in the war on terror led by former president George W. Bush, and the Italian authorities were not impressed. Italy’s chief prosecutor Armando Spataro opened a criminal investigation when details of the torture—including the cleric being hung from his feet with electric prods on his genitals—came to light.

  13. In June 2007 Lady, along with 21 other CIA agents, including CIA Italy chief Jeff Castello, the Air Force pilot who flew Abu Omar, and two Italian secret-service agents who were supposedly in cahoots with the Americans, were tried for kidnapping the cleric. They were convicted in 2009 after a lengthy trial and sentenced to between seven and nine years in prison. Lady and the others fled Italy when the trial began, presumably to escape prosecution, and have not been back since.

  14. Last September, Italy’s highest court upheld all of the Americans’ convictions, but suspended the sentences for all but Lady, who is known as “Mr. Bob” in the Italian press.
Lady, who owned a multi-million dollar villa in Piedmont, had planned on retiring in Italy. After his conviction, the house was confiscated and sold to pay off part of the restitution to Abu Omar.
Multi-million $$$ villa. Spook work sure pays well!
I wonder what type of mansions the spooks who worked with Caro quintera own?

  16. One thing is for sure: the OFFICIAL STORY IS FALSE!
The mexican story is false and the US story is false since both sides are too dirty to want the truth to get out.
