15 bodies found in mass graves in Veracruz

AP

A suspected member of the Zetas drug cartel led Mexican authorities to mass graves at two ranches in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz where marines unearthed 15 bodies by Wednesday.

The navy said its personnel detained Francisco Alvarado Martagon on Tuesday when he tried to drive a vehicle without license plates past a military checkpoint near the city of Acayucan.

Once in custody, Alvarado Martagon confessed to being a head lookout for the Zetas, the navy said.

Under questioning, the man mentioned two sites at local ranches that the Zetas allegedly used to dispose of bodies, including rivals or members of their own gang who had been executed, it said.

The navy announced Wednesday morning that marines inspected the sites and found the buried, decomposed remains of 10 people but were still searching. The security force increased the number of bodies to 15 later Wednesday.

Veracruz has been the scene of bloody battles between the Zetas and the Sinaloa drug cartel.

Mexican authorities have found hundreds of bodies dumped by drug gangs in mass graves in recent years, mainly in the northern states of Durango and Tamaulipas.

  1. As I keep telling on different occasions, these mass graves foundings will be made every time the authorities try to show their work and service for the people!

    1. Agreed that is a plausible point but don't think that all those shows for the public are for bad. Some of those could be done as part of a positive reason.

People have short attention spans. It's "possible" that they could be doing this to get their attention back on the subject.

It is also possible that it is as it is supposed to be.

We can only judge the overall direction as opposed to judging each individual thing that happens.

      This is my humble opinion...

  3. February 9, 2012 11:06 AM Shut the hell up, just because you read news here and there you think you know how the country works, you made this statement on the killings in Tamaulipas and now you are mixing Tamaulipas with Veracruz.

I very appreciate your gentle manner of arguing but let me say that I know some facts in the favour of my position! My friends working in police lament that their patron dont let them just do their work but load them with bullshitting tasks of no practical use! Of course not all cops are corrupted and many of them really do their work! So if you dont know the situation - keep your filthy mouth shut!

  6. I find it odd how we as humans get so worked up by the personal views of others. It has not barring on ourselves.

It's not easy letting go of frustrations and hate etc. trust me in saying that I battle each day. But we all know this to be true. At least I believe so

If these personal beliefs are acted in a way that they negatively effect someone else, then at least you have some level of concern. But do it with a level head.

  7. February 9, 2012 1:23 PM My cousin is a cop in Mexico, according to what I know, only 50% of the police was corrupted and those statistics were from 2009. Your statement is stupid when you said police are saving and hiding corpses to be found latter. I do too hide a corpse on my back yard just in case.

  10. Hola Ove!

    @3:29

Reports came out this year that almost all police are corrupted and in the hands of cartels alond the frontera and 5 other states where heavy narco activity exists. My op is Calderon should have taken control of those municipalities, he just know began doing that but it is 5 years too late. If pena wins the issue will be moot.

as for taking bodies. this does happen in Mexico and for reasons Ove and I have discussed and can't figure out why. especially the replacing. this happens as well, usually shorly after the kill. there have been cameras that depict that SOMEtimes it is the police. and they have found many bodies buried in the yards of family homes. Durango comes to mind but is not alone.

    Paz, Chivis

  11. Isn't it kind of sad and telling that when I/we see '15 bodies', part of us says 'that's it', or 'that's not that bad'?
