Cocaine Legalization in Colombia Rejected by Leftist Government

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

Packages of siezed cocaine following an anti-narcotics police raid in Buenaventura, Colombia.

Colombia’s new leftist government said it is planning an overhaul of the policy toward illegal drugs, but said this won’t include legalizing cocaine.

Police resources will be dedicated to pursuing drug cartels and money launders rather than addicts and the farmers who grow illegal crops, Justice Minister Nestor Osuna told reporters in congress on Tuesday.

The police said Tuesday that they had suspended the forced eradication of coca, the raw material for making cocaine.

President Gustavo Petro said in his inaugural address this month that the war on drugs had failed, and called for a new approach. Colombia is the world’s largest producer of cocaine, with higher output of the drug than Peru and Bolivia combined.

    1. They probably made a deal about this with and because of the ELN. That, plus pushback from the “Biden administration” on the new president’s approach to drugs.

  5. If cocaine is illegal it is more expensive. Can't lessen the profits.Meanwhile addiction is much more a mental problem than not.No amount of shooting can change a mental problem.

    1. Depends how much it’s taxed or not. It depends on the country but in the U.S. I would imagine a gram of legal OTC coke would still cost the typical 60 - $80 for a gram.

  6. If Colombia legalized cocaine it would kill any chance of creating a successful country among the western world. Large businesses simply wouldnt invest in Colombia as it would be viewed negatively.
