Nuevo León Issues Travel Alert for Neighboring State of Tamaulipas

"Morogris" for Borderland Beat

Governor of Nuevo Leon, Jaime Rodriguez Calderon, best known by his nickname "El Bronco"
The violence unfolding in northeastern Mexico has escalated so much that state governments have started to issue travel alerts in the region. On Wednesday, Jaime Rodríguez Calderón, nicknamed "El Bronco", the Governor of Nuevo León, issued a travel alert for the neighboring state of Tamaulipas.

At a press conference, the governor warned Nuevo Leon residents to avoid unnecessary trips on the Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo federal highway, since in recent months there has been an increase in forced disappearances and car hijackings.

As reported by Borderland Beat, over 50 people have gone missing in this highway this year. Several of the missing persons were US citizens.

It is common for foreign embassies to ask their tourists to avoid traveling to certain areas of Mexico for safety reasons. However, travel alerts like the one issued by Nuevo Leon this week are extremely rare.

"What is happening is public knowledge. It is necessary to ask the population of Nuevo León that they avoid [traveling to Tamaulipas] if it is not urgent. If they want to go, I ask them to wait until everything is calm", El Bronco said.

El Bronco was not only asking Nuevo Leon residents to avoid Nuevo Laredo, but also Reynosa, another border city in Tamaulipas. This past weekend, Gulf Cartel (CDG) members from a rival faction carried out a killing spree in Reynosa. In a span of a day, over 20 people were killed, including taxis drivers, workers, and a nursing student.

According to official sources, the Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo highway is controlled by the Northeast Cartel (CDN), a criminal group based in Nuevo Laredo and off-shoot of the old Zetas group. The Reynosa-Monterrey highway, on the other hand, is controlled by the Metros faction of the CDG.

In Mexico there are currently more than 88,000 people missing, according to the National Search Commission. Of those, more than 11,500 are from Tamaulipas while nearly 5,500 are from Nuevo León.

  1. Acknowledgement of what's transpiring on this stretch of road will not deter criminal activities.
It's a shame that citizens continue to be held hostage while no such police presence are not being utilized.
Criminals run Mexico plain & simple.
Government officials can care less as long its not them.

    2. Governor bronco, alias "La Mula Bronca" stole the money for public security, now he can't have law and order in his own state but won't say so, while expecting to get along well with incoming new governor elect alias "La Samuelita Garcia" who used illegal money for his campaign including stolen from Jalisco by enrique alfaro also of MC who got to power on the shoulders of CJNG Sergio Kurt Schmidt before falling out.
Former Nayarit governor Roberto Sandoval seems to have been arrested in Nuevo Lion where he took refuge after he was wanted for arrest because of drug trafficking, stealing money and property of Nayarit citizens in cahoots with his state public security lawman edgar "el diablo" veytia, and la mula never knew nothin'...

  5. Where is the stupid mf that says arming the citizens is a bad idea??? This kindve shit is exactly why Trump wanted to classify the cartels as terrorist... a main highway from Monterey to the border is not usable due to cartel activity??? GTF outta here!!! Where’s the stupid mf that says happens in the USA all the time??? Thx México and thanks dumbass Biden .... whatever our VPz ja name is had to practically be begged and then firmly instructed to get her ass to the border to evaluate the situation and she did not come up with shit!! At least Trump had the border under control but these current dumasses don’t seem to have a clue... the liberal media in the USA and the dems are directly responsible for shit like due to the lack of reporting this shit in the us and the open border
Policy that Biden has decided to employ ... Méxicoz highway of death leads directly to Texas and the current administration in the USA doesn’t give a dam... what a joke the democrática pansy’s party has become in the USA....

    2. Relax, what's happening in Mexico will occur in USA within couple of decades. USA is leading to severe internal conflict that will burst out in a decade. Taking up lot of diversed ethnics will create trouble that cannot be solved. Ethnic issues will be psychological and has major impact. Yugoslavia is a clear example and also USSR. Wall is necessary for USA but democrats for vote bank beggers not patriots. They will make latinas as equal majority. Opinion differs. Instead of giving citizenship to all, USA can have database sharing with Mexico and South American countries to reject persons entering USA who has criminal records. So at least only victims may get shelter in USA

    1. Mass shootings in the US are up compared to last year & time.
People are afraid nowadays to go grocery shopping for fear of becoming a victim of someone who can't cope with life. Gun control is necessary in America.
In the end it's the NRA & gun lobbyists who dictate. Pockets are bigger & deeper than citizens voice.

  9. No shame in announcing like this. At least one should make people aware there is an issue over there. Cdg is the most coward cartel that will hurt only unarmed and weak public. Has no guts to stand up against other equally strong cartels. CDN just recruits people to reduce population counts by letting them attack army and die quickly. Cdn is a begger with arms. They do robberies and vandalising, surviving with that. No difference between them and beggers, in fact beggers are better in every aspect.

  10. There is a drone in UK which identifies if a house/ranch is possessing arms, Mexico can use such drones to catch criminals. I have read in a news UK has used that drone and ended up siezing drugs and arms

    1. @4:29 No thanks, gov will only disarm the honest citizens who got a weapon, even through black market, for protection and keep in bed with the cartels.

    2. Kathi I agree with the logic 3:51 is stating. Instead of using it on the criminals, they will use it take away the weapons from law abiding citizens. Yes you would think the real impact is to use it on the criminals. Government wants bribe money coming in, boy don't get me started. Obrador being the puppet at times, wants less DEA intervention, when in fact USA pumps millions in aid yearly to fight the war on drugs.

  11. This article needs some clarification. Like most of the articles I've seen on this subject, it talks about the "Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo federal highway." That's very ambiguous, as there are in fact TWO highways that run between the two cities: 85 and 85D. The former is the "free" road, the latter the toll road. For those of us who occasionally travel in this area, it would be helpful to know which of the two highways is being discussed. Even the information that "the roadway is dangerous between kilometers 36 and 26" doesn't help. Both 85 and 85D have such a stretch of road.

    1. Correct. None of the cited sources clarified whether they meant the toll/federal (couta) or free highway (libre). If you check our recent posts about Nuevo Laredo you’ll find a deeper explanation on the differences between the two (check the story on the 3 US citizens that went missing after leaving Sabinas Hidalgo).

The recent car hijacking video Sol Prendido posted was on the federal highway. You can tell right away by the fence and quality of the road. I’ve gone through that highway countless times.

If I had to guess, most of the disappearances happen on the free portion south of Nuevo Laredo, or on the “libre” highway. There are some cartel outlooks posted on the sides of the road south of Nuevo Laredo that target vehicles with Texas or Nuevo León plates. More info on some of our recent posts.

      Hope this helps.
