Crime Journalist's Daughter Kidnapped; Abductors Pressure Him To Cease Publications

"MX" for Borderland Beat

"The daughter of journalist José Prigadaá Andrade has been abducted in Veracruz in what appears to be retaliation for his work covering corruption and security. Veracruz is the most deadly place in Mexico, and probably the world, to be a journalist", said Duncan Tucker, a British freelance journalist based in Mexico.

Veracruz investigative journalist José Prigadaá Andrade has revealed that his daughter Rosa Itzel Citlalli Prigadaá was kidnapped by unknown assailants on 13 April 2021 in Martinez de la Torre Municipality.

Press freedom organization ARTICLE 19 confirmed the kidnapping and said that the abductors told Prigadaá that they kidnapped his daugher so he could "chill the fuck out".

It should be noted that Prigadaá covers issues on corruption and security in Veracruz. He has sufferred death threats from his work and had protection measures from the Corpus of English for Academic and Professional Purposes (CEAPP) until 2019.

ARTICLE 19 also asked the State Commission for the Attention and Protection of Journalists to strengthen Prigadaá's protection measures and extend them to the rest of his family. They asked Mexico's Attorney General's Office to work closely with officials in Veracruz, where there is already an investigation at the state-level for this kidnapping.

"I ask you to help me continue her search. I fear for my daughter's life, she is a young woman, without vices, without problems, and who likes to play with her sisters", wrote Prigadaá in a public letter.

Mexico is the most dangerous country in the Western Hemisphere for journalists. No state in Mexico has been deadlier than Veracruz, which according to some accounts may be the most dangerous region in the world for journalists. Under the administration of Governor of Veracruz Javier Duarte de Ochoa (2010  2016), twelve journalists were killed in Veracruz; close to a dozen more went missing.

Whoever came up with this idea needs to release the girl, and be executed by his Boss for stupidity.

  3. All journalists should send their family out of Mexico. It's not worth putting them in the line of fire.
