Gulf Cartel Faction Leader Evaristo 'El Vaquero' Cruz-Sanchez Arrested in Monterrey

Evaristo "El Vaquero" Cruz Sanchez, Leader of Matamoros Faction of the Gulf Cartel

Mexican military forces arrested a top leader within the Gulf Cartel (CDG). The collar comes as the organization works to provide financial support to political candidates in the northern border region, U.S. law enforcement sources tell Breitbart Texas.

Known as “El Vaquero,” Evaristo Cruz Sanchez is the current leader of the Matamoros faction of the Gulf Cartel and is linked to violence throughout northeastern Tamaulipas. Since July 2019, “El Vaquero” was included in the Tamaulipas government's list of priorities, the Tamaulipas FGJE offered a reward of up to 2,000,000 pesos.

The raid took place on Tuesday at noon in Salinas Victoria, a short distance from the Monterrey Metropolitan area in Nuevo Leon, a U.S. law enforcement source tells Breitbart Texas. Mexican intelligence forces were tracking Vaquero after he surfaced in Nuevo Leon. The crime boss was trying to keep a low profile and switched safe houses regularly. "El Vaquero" sought refuge in Monterrey after military forces and the National Guard started hunting him in Tamaulipas, the law enforcement source revealed.

Mexican military forces arrested "El Vaquero" as he was meeting with a man known only as “El Chago” Villarreal, a local crime boss and former member of Los Zetas. He now supports Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG). According to the U.S. law enforcement source, the two drug figures met to discuss the financing of political campaigns in northern Mexico.

The soldiers were also in a house located on Hidalgo streets between Guerrero and Allende, which is owned by Raúl Cantú, candidate of the Citizen Movement for Mayor of Salinas Victoria, who was not present at the time and when he found out, he arrived to ask for an explanation and was arrested as well.

His faction of the Gulf Cartel has recently been embattled with a new faction calling itself "New Era Gulf Cartel" in Matamoros. This cell is presumed to be headed by Mario Alberto “Beto” Cárdenas, who is currently in a Mexican jail but remains active. His second in command is Raúl "Scorpion 2" García Martinez.

“El Vaquero” was linked to the protests and blockades in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, against the Special Operations Group (GOPES) of the state's Public Security Secretariat. The presence of a group of protesters (taxi drivers, citizens, and merchants) was reported on the bridges, Viejo and Los Tomates. The complainants tried to prevent the entry of the GOPES to carry out an operation.

According to accounts on social networks, the protesters would be led by Evaristo Cruz, who would have organized people to make the security tactics of the Tamaulipas government impossible.

  3. All these former golf and zetas or cdn will be absorbed by CJNG in Nuevo Leon. Thats how jalisco gains entrance into a state by absorbing the local rejects or renegades.

The gulf cartel is so divided wouldnt be surprised if most small groups in Tamps and N.L get absorbed to CJNG and now it will be a three way battle in those states.

Salinas Victoria is close to the hwy Mty N.Laredo...maybe CJNG planning on pushing incursions into N.Laredo once its more established?

  7. Animo compadres!

This arrest wont affect our incursions into the Gulf. There are many other regional bosses who are begging us to favor them. The New Generation welcomes former Gulf and Zetas to join us in our revolution to purify the Mexican underworld and remake it in Senor Menchos image!

    1. Remember Rafita 82? He was originally CDG Matamoros and Tampico and had ties to the CJNG before he had a fall out with them. I've heard that some Espartanos (one of the two dominant factions from Matamoros) have a loose alliance with the CJNG.

    1. There are at least two factions in Matamoros. Escorpiones (led by Raul Garcia Martinez AKA El Loco and/or Escorpion 2) and Espartanos (led by El Contador). Vaquero was part of Espartanos. The dominant faction in Matamoros is Escorpiones, but Espartanos has good presence out-of-state.
