Shootout Between Gulf Cartel Factions From Matamoros and Reynosa Leave 6 Dead

"MX" for Borderland Beat

A shootout between rival factions of the Gulf Cartel (CDG) left 6 sicarios dead on Tuesday evening in Reynosa, Tamaulipas. The bodies of the fallen sicarios were found about 700 m (2,296 ft) from the entrance of the Reynosa-Pharr International Bridge.

The firefight was reportedly between Los Escorpiones, one of the CDG factions based in Matamoros, and Los Metros, the CDG faction in Reynosa. Citizen journalists in Tamaulipas say that the shootout started after Los Escorpiones kidnapped Los Metros operator Ladislao Barra Guzman and/or Roque Cruz Fuentes ('Roque').

Roque and his family were reportedly being escorted by the National Guard when Los Escorpiones snatched him at gunpoint. Some reports state that Roque was an active member of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) political party in Tamaulipas and that the National Guard may not have been aware of his real identity at the moment of his abduction.

In September 2020, cartel members leaked pictures and audio messages of Roque on social media. One of the audio messages shared showed that Roque was trying to negotiate with the rival Northeast Cartel (CDN).

Two pictures of Roque, including one wearing a ski-mask and bullet-proof vest, became viral on social media. Several people on Twitter and Facebook made fun of his corpulent appearance.

The city of Reynosa has seen an uptick in violence in recent days. Last week, cartel members drove from Rio Bravo to Reynosa and killed a family of four, including two senior people. Citizen journalists said that the attack was perpetrated by Los Escorpiones.

The victims killed last week in Reynosa were: Genova de la Fuente Izaguirre (aged 66); Eulogio Cardenas Segovia (aged 87); Aron Cardenas de la Fuente (aged 26); and Humberto Cardenas de la Fuente (aged 36). The last one died in the hospital.

  2. A few people have been gunned down in Reynosa since February. Very unusual for an area under strict Metros control. I wonder if Kike’s death may have anything to do with this rise of violence in Reynosa. So many unknowns...

  3. Why was Roque posting with a bullet proof vest? He doesn’t clearly need it. Bullet would bounce off him 😅

    1. Yes I believe so. But most mainstream media other than Bb and valor tamaulipeco and mennynoticias will get it wrong. Can’t blame them. CDG is hard to follow for sure

    1. Not really @Billy. Although metros and Escorpiones are different factions, they had a pact of nonaggression for many years. Every now and then things slip, but it’s never been a full out war. Otherwise Reynosa and Matamoros would be in constant war and bloodshed which isn’t the case
