Magdalena de Kino, Sonora: 3 Sicarios Killed by Security Forces in Cartel Checkpoint

"MX" for Borderland Beat

No military casualties were reported

The cartel war in the municipality of Magdalena de Kino, Sonora, turned deadlier over the weekend after several shootouts and arsons were reported. There have been shootouts occurring frequently in this area since 2 March 2021.

In one incident this weekend, cartel members and security forces clashed in Ejido La Cebolla. The shootout started after military personnel discovered a cartel checkpoint. The checkpoint was being used to inspect civilians coming in and out of Magdalena de Kino.

Upon noticing the presence of the officers, the cartel gunmen opened fire, but the military soldiers responded and killed three assailants. Five soldiers were wounded but were reported in stable condition.

Users on social media reported that cartel members burned several houses and ranches in the area.

Due to the way in which the events occurred, there are no photographs or close-up videos of the actual shootout. Above is a video a social media user shared of police officers heading to the crime scene.

Turf war

The wave of narco-terror in this part of Sonora began on March 2, in the Imuris and Magdalena highway, where an armed confrontation between cartel figures and the armed forces was reported. The clash caused the closure of the federal highway.

Through social media, Magdalena residents reported that they were "locked up" because the entrance and exit roads to this municipality were blocked during the shootouts.

Mexican federal investigators indicate that the Sinaloa Cartel is the main criminal group in Magdalena de Kino, Sonora, plaza. This turf is a strategic location for drug trafficking given its proximity to the US state of Arizona.

As reported by Borderland Beat, much of the violence in Sonora is driven by conflicts between several factions of the Sinaloa Cartel and local drug groups.

Los Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel operates there with the support of Los Salazar faction. They are said to be competing with La Plaza and/or the Caborca Cartel, reportedly headed by Rafael Caro Quintero.

Local reports have mentioned that the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) may be working with Caro Quintero to fight the Sinaloa Cartel.

Other groups have been reported in the area, including a gang known as Los Jabalies and/or Los Jabalis, formed by the Villagrana family, and Los Memos, headed by Adelmo Niebla González and/or Guillermo Nieblas Nava ('El G3').

  1. Magdalena has been pretty bad lately. All of Sonora. Thanks to Chapitos getting ready. Look at Mexicali and what has happened to El Omega and his group.

    5. @7:10 Stfu, it's always been their plaza, it's the Caro Quintero group creating mayhem in alliance with CJNG after El Chapo's extradition.

Mexicali like many places under CDS control were the most peaceful of places before CJNG existed.

People say Chapo wasn't shit, well after he was gone the internal wars began.

    6. I don't just mean the cartels all cartels are trash. I meant sinaloans as a people period. I miss the old Mexicali before they came in large numberss

    7. 9:05 you have no idea what you're talking about.

    8. 9:05 the Quintero’s owned Sonora back in the Guadalajara cartel days. You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about.
When RCQ got locked up his cousin was in control along with chapo trini.
And saying things got bad because cjng you must be new to the cartel wars. Chapo invaded Tijuana, chihuahua, nuevo Laredo and turned them into war zones. But cjng got things bad right? Do your research then come back

    9. Is it getting bad in Mexicali or just in the outskirts of the city

  2. This is off topic but out of nowhere last night they had a massive movement of inmates from the Zacatecas prison to different states around 400 prisoners. Videos have leaked from prisoners inside that were against it yelling & threatening authorities that their will be more deaths and also claiming allegiance to señor mencho & el 92.
What i wonder is if cjng paid for then to get moved out to different prisons where it will be easier for them to mysteriously get let out quicker in order to have them back in the ranks of sicarios or is this work of cds paying the government to get rid of them. Interesting events going on there.

  3. Does anyone here really think RCQ is actually the head of the Caborca Cartel as everyone says he is? Idk. The guy has money to not have to work anymore. And things change after being imprisoned for +15 years. Old capos don’t jump back into the game so quickly. I personally don’t buy it and think it’s an excuse to go after him since he is wanted in the US

    2. I think at the very most he is financially supporting his family in Caborca. I'm very suspicious of these reports that he's the leader . The Quintero family is large and not all of them are on the same page all the time .

  4. Since early March 2021. Probably should have chosen a better choice of words. It's as if it's implied that we are no longer in March or as if it was months ago. Other than that great article

    1. Feedback taken! I've changed it to 2 March 2021, per one of the cited sources:

"... La ola de narcoterror en Sonora inició el pasado 2 de marzo, en la carretera Imuris-Magdalena ..."

      Thank you!

    2. 7:24 la ola de terror started waaay before the tubutama massacre, Puerto Peñasco attack on El Macho Prieto, Guarderia ABC fire, guillermo padrés robberies and murdering, and the disaster of your birth...

  5. I believe his family is split between Caro and the Quinteros. It's said that a high ranking member of the CJNG (I think is in prison) was a Quintero. Nephew or some direct relative of RCQ. I speculate that RCQ is very close to Mencho and NG. Chivis used to mention that Mencho and RCQ we're actually very close and very friendly as Mencho made Sure RCQ businesses In Jalisco we're looked after and kept from trouble while he was in prison. There is also a song where It talks about RCQ meeting an unknown man and having a party in which he invited him to work but RCQ respectfully declined and asked to be left to live in peace.
This unknown capo wishes him luck and tells him to be careful because things are not how they once we're. He says exactly
    "Hay nueva gente, Nueva Generacion"

Again this is just speculation so before anyone runs their mouths Understand this.
And no that song is not about his meeting with Chapo, Mayo or Chino. It's About El Mencho and RCQ meeting

Caro Quintero Soy- Los incomparables de Tijuana
    Thoughts anyone?

    1. @7:21 You meant "were" not "we're" (verb to be in present tense, short for "we are") a lot of times on your comment but other than that I agree with you. I think that Caro was released by PRI with the sole purpose of meeting El Mencho and they actually did things together.

Caro might be some sort of a middleman between northern capos and war strategy advisor at those areas for Mencho.

This would also explain why the Caborca crews are fighting CDS.

    2. en esa canción habla del mayo y chapo
nueva generación se refiere a que ya no es lo mismo que el vicio hay más violencia. con la nueva generación de la gente que está ahorita.
los Quintero y todas las familias no todos se llevan bien.

    3. I think it's farther back than that. El "Borrego" is said to be that nephew @7:21. Search up an article here of a meeting in ZMG where a Veracruzano is abatido in an apartment complex. Why would that area flip so easily and other important plazas? "No contaban con mi astucia" por eso les calló como balde de agua helada la salida..

    2. @1632 hrs.: Nope. Ever heard of Meyer Lansky?

Only one outfit really “runs it all”—it isn’t Italian, Asian, or Mexican. It’s the same outfit that rammed iron nails through The Galilean on Golgotha. There’s truly nothing new under the Sun.😉
