Mexican drug boss 'El Chapo' appeals U.S. drug conspiracy conviction

NEW YORK -- The notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman wants his U.S. conspiracy conviction thrown out.

An appeal filed Friday argues that a judge made rulings allowing a jury to hear faulty evidence at his trial. It also cites reports that before reaching a guilty verdict, some jurors sought out news accounts about sex abuse allegations against him that were barred from the trial. Prosecutors declined to comment Saturday.

Guzman was sentenced last year to life behind bars in for a massive drug conspiracy that spread murder and mayhem for more than two decades.
Before the federal case, he had attained near-mythical status by escaping from prison twice in Mexico, the second time through a tunnel dug into the shower of his cell. He was recaptured and sent in 2017 to the United States and put in solitary confinement.

At trial, Guzman’s lawyers argued he was the fall guy for other kingpins who were better at paying off top Mexican politicians and law enforcement officials to protect them.

“Chapo Guzman’s prosecution was marred by rampant excess and overreach, both governmental and judicial – needless resorts if he was really the kingpin extraordinaire his adversaries insisted,” the appeal says.

His defense lawyer, Marc Fernich, argues, among other things, that the extraordinary security measures that surrounded Guzman prevented a fair trial.

For instance, Fernich cites the two-and-a-half years in solitary confinement before the guilty verdict in early 2019 as making it difficult for him to work with his defense team.

In addition, the lawyer for the 63-year-old Mexican accuses the US judiciary of having ignored media reports that said several members of the jury were reading news and social media posts about the trial as it was under way, something the judge forbade to prevent undue influence.

  1. Yes he took the fall but he chose it himself. Why is Chapo meeting with Hollywood actors and moving around in Culiacán, Los Mochis, and Mazatlán. I’m pretty sure if he was in la Sierra he would be free right now. The thing I find even crazier Is the raid in Los Mochis where he almost escaped. When the marines enter the house the tunnel was flooded with rain. He was in the tunnel for hours. The next safe house is about a mile away. The marines found the tunnel like 40 minutes into the raid. That’s enough time for him to make it to the next house but sense the water kept rising he had to exit through the the sewer system on the street.

  2. I mean, why does he still bother??

He should of gone out like Pablo, now he's left counting dust and ceiling tiles.

    1. My guy you don’t realize how close el Chapo was to escaping. El Chapo house is raided. A huge gunbattle occurred the gun battle was to buy time for el Chapo and el cholo Ivan to escape through the tunnel. The next safe house was like a mile away. About 40 minutes into the raid they found the tunnel. You would think that’s enough time to get to the safe house. But this is when everything goes bad for Chapo. It had rained causing the tunnel to be full of water. This Caused el Chapo to spend hours in the tunnel. He couldn’t make it to the next safe house because the water kept rising. So he crawled out the sewer system in the middle of the street. They stole a car that broke down or ran out of gas. They stole a second but were stoped by Federales. This is when el Chapo decides if he wants to try his best and full send to freedom or if he should try and bribe them. I’m guessing he chose to bribe them but it dint work. The difference between Chapo and Pablo was that Chapo had power when he was captured and Pablo had nowhere near as much power as he once had when he was killed. Let’s not forget Chapo escaped twice and supposedly he was already planning a third escape.

    2. 😂😂😂 you’re kidding right? Pablo went to WAR with the Colombian government. He went out shooting not crying on TV. Chop escaped because of his cooperation with the government. That’s not my. He got caught por p3ndej0 trying to meet with Hollywood actors. That’s not smart my guy. Where’s his power now? He can’t even get a breath of fresh air or a daily shower @@5:33

    4. 8:33 when did I say Pablo wasn’t powerful. I said that Pablo didn’t have as much power as Chapo had when he was killed and Chapo was captured. Pablo went out shooting because he didn’t have a plan like el Chapo. Chapo had gunmen ready to fight and a tunnel leading to safe house, he had 2 armored vehicles. Things just didn’t work out. If Chapo manage to escape he was good he would still remain as one of the most powerful narcos. Even if Pablo manage to escape that raid he was over. What was pablos plan run out the window.

Better hope Chapo doesn’t return to Mexico because our Grupo Elite will take him out as soon as he crosses the border. The only reason we spared Palma is because we felt sorry for him.

  7. Hahaha good luck with that Mr. Guzman! The U.S. will never let you out. You are destined to rot in there like the trail of bodies you left in your wake. There should be a sign over your cell, written by Dante himself, reading, "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here."

As for the caption, I corrected the date, yes, the source did indeed have the incorrect date in the image caption.

Which did absolutely ZERO in effecting the content of the post.
