The Caro Quintero Factor in Sonora

By Buggs for Borderland Beat
Rafael Caro Quintero
The deep-seated roots of influence of the Caro Quintero in Sonora demonstrate how powerful the surnames can be in a territory marked by drug trafficking. Today we will not write about Rafael Caro Quintero and his extensive history within drug trafficking in the Sonoran region, but we will talk about some characters that drive a new movement that maintains confrontations in the state of Sonora.

We are talking about relatives of Rafael, characters who grew up in the mafia environment and today maintain the hierarchical inheritance of the illegal operations that once made this family grow. We are talking about the powerful promoters and operators that maintain the war for Sonora against the Sinaloa cartel, especially with the children of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera "Los Chapitos" and his army of La Gente Nueva.

Their confrontations in the south and north of the state are their main objectives in the border with the United States. The wave of violence in cities such as Cajeme, Guaymas, Empalme, Hermosillo, Caborca and other municipalities are part of this war waged by the factions of both organizations.

"El Cadete"

The leaders of the advances for the control of Sonora by the Caro Quintero clan are Jose Gil Caro Quintero "El Jogil, El Pelochino or "El Chino" and Juan Pablo Quintero Navidad. Jose is the son of Eulogia Quintero Payan and cousin of Rafael Caro Quintero while Juan Pablo is the son of the famous Emilio Quintero Payan and brother of Emilio Sajid Quintero "El Cadete" who is also the cousin of Rafael. Both control the territory in Sonora and parts of Chihuahua and are the ferrous competitors of the Salazar family of the Sinaloa cartel in both regions.

They are high-ranking operators and operate in low profile. Of Jose Gil Caro Quintero, it is known that on January 8, 2016, he was released from the Puente Grande Prison in Jalisco after serving a sentence for organized crime, and he is also suspected of forging an alliance with Damaso Lopez "El Licenciado" to plan the elimination of Los Chapitos that belong to the upper structure of the Sinaloa cartel. They were responsible for the abduction of both sons of El Chapo Guzman in Puerto Vallarta. Of Juan Pablo Quintero Navidad very little is known other than his kinship and that he is a key figure of the organization after the arrest of his brother " El Cadete."

Caro Quintero clan in Sonora

This is why it is very probable that Rafael Caro Quintero may still be very still active and in command of family operations, although, others argue that he lives in hiding, threatened by governmental operations of Mexico and the US, who seek his recapture after a federal judge in Mexico ordered his prompt release.

What is clear is that the Caro Quintero family maintains hegemony over time within drug trafficking after an extended active life in the Mexican mafia environment.

Jose and Juan Pablo support the groups of Alfredo Olivas Valenzuela "El Chapo Olivas" or "El Alfa" in Ciudad Obregon and Rodrigo Paez Quintero "El R" in Caborca. They have also formed alliances in Chihuahua with factions of the Juarez cartel and its armed wing "La Linea." They are rumored to have strategic points of collaboration with cells of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG). This might increase after the arrest of El Marro, allowing CJNG to take full control of the Guanajuato region while looking to expand north.

Independent Groups:

  • In Obregon with the group of los Chapos Trinis or Los Alfas who was led at one time by Trinidad Olivas Valenzuela "El Chapo Trini," was executed in 2017 in Zapopan, Jalisco and Emilio Sajid Quintero Navidad "El Cadete" formerly Leader of the group who was arrested in 2017 while crossing the border. Organization is said to be led by brother of Trinidad Alfredo Olivas Valenzuela "El Chapo Olivas" who are both relatives of the singer Alfredo Olivas. Another relative in this case is Irvin Olivas "El Nomo" are part of the command structure. Miguel Enrique Aragon Camacho "El Telcel" is Operator and Head of sicarios for the organization. Others are Francisco Javier Duarte "El Antena" Operator for the organization in Bacum and the Yaqui valley, Alejo Olivas Valenzuela "El Miky," Bencel Aragon Camacho "El Tio," Alejandro Perez Ozuna "El Jarocho," Benjamin Quiñones "El Tigre," Mateo Quinones "El Pulpo" are some of the main operators and leaders for the organization. The group was born out of the famous freedom colonization of Ciudad Obregon, Sonora and have been suspected in executions and disappearances in the region of Ciudad Obregon.
  • In Guaymas and Empalme a group calling themselves "La Plaza" who are led by Francisco Javier Espinoza Camacho "El Fino" or "El Picipi" who remains operational leader of the group. Others are Jesús Hernández Esquivel "El Oliver" who is plaza boss of Empalme, Juan Carlos Real Nieblas alias " El Mocho" who is also in charge of operations in sectors of Guaymas. This group is said to be responsible for executions and disappearances in the area of Guaymas and Empalme, as well as high profile murders in the coastal zone.
  • In Caborca the group of the Paez family or the so-called "Caborca Cartel" and its armed wing "La Barredora 24/7," that is led by those close to the Quintero family who include Jose Rodrigo Paez Quintero "El R" and Oscar Pascual de la Rocha "El Chapon" or "El Chapo de la Rocha," both being regional leaders of the organization. Jesus Dario Murrieta Navarro "El Cara de Cochi" is boss of sicarios for the organization in La Perla del Desierto.

These are just some of the members who make up these groups.

There is talk of alliances in the Chihuahua region with cells from the Juarez cartel and its armed wing La Linea, especially in areas that are not in the control of the Salazar family of the Sinaloa cartel. With the group of the Bournes brothers who are said to be allied to La Linea and perhaps some cells of the CJNG in Jalisco and Veracruz.

Between both, Jose Gil Caro Quintero "El Jogil" and Juan Pablo Quintero Navidad are the major operators of these groups in the Sonoran region and form a part of the mountain region of Chihuahua that maintains a fight for the control of drug trafficking against the Salazar family of Don Adan, Alfredo and Crispin Salazar, leaders of the group in the region.

Their confrontations and executions have planted seeds of terror among the population. For example, both have attacked and conducted extensive executions against the municipal authorities in Guaymas, where the organization of the Salazars has executed police personnel who maintain collusion with the adversarial groups, in the same way, "La Plaza" responds similarly.

Executions come and go, the wave of violence has reached record numbers of murders in the state, surpassing the numbers of the war of the Beltran Leyva against the Sinaloa cartel after their breakup.

El Mayo, Los Caro Quintero vs Los Chapitos

These characters with powerful surnames in the criminal sphere make us think of a new criminal structure within the state of Sonora, the intense war with the sons of Joaquin Guzman (Chapitos). The war between both groups for control of Sonora state and the low-profile participation of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada Garcia make for a new criminal battleground in Sonora.

      2. Keith Richards died in 1982. It's just the drugs have been keeping his body in a standing up position for the last 38 years. Check out the youtube where Keith was ready to smack some guy with his guitar that bumrushed the stage and was coming toward mick. Tough guys

    2. This is why the U.S. and Mexico want to take out La Linea by blaming them for shit like Los Lebaron. They are once again kicking Sinaloa ass and they are getting too powerful forming alliances with Sinaloa enemies.
Understand the U.S. wants one cartel only in all Mexico and if not Linea they blame CDN or Jalisco cartel or anyone but CDS for anything bad that happens in Mexico. Even if it happens in the heart of CDS territory.
      Why is that?

    3. 6:02 every "new administration" that comes to power on the US, has to go through pleasing of the powers that be, or they will meet opposition to all of their agenda, Blackrock, Blackwater, Dyncorp, private security corporations hungry for governemnt contracts dedicated to pleasing Corporate Welfare Queens, because without government support their "Capitalist World" collapses...
I doubt La Linia or their enemies have any power like that

  8. Biggs, Great article.

Correct me if I am wrong, my understanding is that the RCQ generation is not the first generation of the extended families to be involved in the drug trade. Either by trafficking or farming contraband.

If this assumption is true how far back does this clan go? 1960s? 1950s? Earlier? It seems that most of the clan keeps a very low profile unlike Rafael and Miguel in the 1980s.

    Thanks...

    1. 2:00 PM Lucky Luciano was in Mexico in the early 20s buying cheap tobacco and Liquor around 1925 maybe earlier when the US fed started to intercept their shipments from Cuba, Europe and the Canadian government started making things difficult.

You have to realize what made Lucky Luciano the godfather of organized crime he could almost predict the future. They weren't just supplying the east coast south east like Florida, New Orleans, but the west coast into California and any mid sized town with more then 20,000 people. Their was a cannabis, heroin and cocaine market but it was small you were still making lots of money but at the time it didn't compare to the liquor or tabacco market. Cannabis for the Mexican's mainly in Texas and california, Heroin for the blacks mainly in New York and Cocaine for the rich whites in Florida, New Orleans, California.

Their is an entire page of drug trafficking from Mexico that is missing from the 20s till today.

    2. All the mexican heroing back then had to go thru the mob. Bugsy Siegel was in charge of that when he was killed. Most likely lucky was in mexico arranging heroin routes. And yes lucky luciano was the man. Hes voice carried more power than any mobster in usa history. Because he was liked by many and had the muscle and smarts to back it up.

People from that region have been involved in the drug business since the days of the mexican revolution, so it wouldn't surprise me if the Quinteros involvement dates as far back as the early 1900's.

Arellanos, Amado Carillo, Caro Quintero, Chapo, Zambada, Beltranes, and any old school drug lord you could think of, all Sinaloenses. All them corridos your dad use to bump when you were a kid were about Sinaloenses mijo. Cuando los Michoacanos y Los Zetas van, Los Sinaloenses ya vienen. CJNG has a long way to go. Mencho was selling grams in the 90s while Mayo was moving tons in the 80's... So get off your high horse payaso.

  11. They have always worked in this area, and they will continue to work in this area. But they aren't taking over anyting. And they aren't taking control of anything. And would be next to impossible to run the Salazar family out of there. Weather Mayo doesn't support them, or poses them, does it mean anything either. The trinis have been there forever doing business along with the family of caro Quintero.

Ivan Guzman is powerful enough to hold his own. Nothing is gonna disrupt the products he sends north. . The things that people should be looking at that are evident, is Who The Mexican government has arrested for killing the Mormon family. Because every time you see one of these things happen, and there is a struggle for power, the government always has their hand in it somewhere. I don't believe Rapha got out of prison for no reason. I believe somebody had and idea for him. And I also believe that Rafael Caro Quintero was linked to the CIA. But we are not going to get into that right now. But I don't believe they're going to force the Guzman boys to do anyting. The Guzman boys are going to defend their territory. Did they worked too hard to make it be what it is. And I guarantee you that there is no shortage of drugs coming north through their Network. How do I know this?...... well, we will save that for another time.

    2. CDC will remain in control of their territory, the western part of Sonora, along with their allies. If you believe they won't do as they please in these areas because of the Chapitos/Salazares/GN then you underestimate them. They have a corridor to ship north. They don't seem to be interested in Nogales, Naco or AP. Without being disrespectful but California is the best market hands down, there's simply no comparison in terms of the amount of money available in the Golden State compared to other states. Clients in the Midwest, use CJ as they are in good terms. Clients in the east coast will also receive their orders easily. Mencho has no interest in fighting Sonora as it's not necessary, everyone has a role in the supply chain.....

    4. I love your comments. However, you have said a couple things that are obviously way off Mark. First, Sonora is the Sinaloa cartel's front yard. There is so much money and finances that run through that area, it's almost unimaginable. That's why some very Heavy Hitters of always run that area. That's why Chapo kept a stronghold there forever. It's very valuable. As far as I can tell those taking on immigration law Guzman boys, you're sadly mistaken on that one. Caro Quintero is no position to take on those boys. Those boys have a lot more support than you think they do all the way into Columbia. This will come down to finances. chapitos have huge money. No I'm not saying that the cantados don't have some degree of financing. What I'm telling you is is that there is an established supply chain right there that brings in huge amounts of money. And it's silly for you to think that they're going to let anyone take that from them. It isn't stopping RCQfrom trying. But they haven't made a huge impact on Chapitos business. I know this first hand. In this case, you are wrong but I enjoy your writing style. And I enjoy the comments that you make. But Quintero is not making a move for California either maybe. All those people that are mentioned in these cases were all regional people from the area of Sonora and Chihuahua. Those people have established roots in several places, but their main roots are through Sonora. There are several Crossing points there. And they are well-established. The only problem is, they are going to take from nobody. They may, have their own piece of the pie. But they are taking any of these people's areas from them. And they are taking on the salazars straight heads up in Sonora. They will lose that battle. I enjoy the Articles bugs puts together, but way back in the Articles when he was writing about Sonora in the early articles he wrote, I told him that there were a bunch of things that he wrote that weren't correct. One of those things, was blaming the Paredes for the LeBaron family Massacre. I know firsthand that that wasn't true. And I told him it wasn't true. And I'm telling you all right now, that Rafael Caro Quintero isn't taking anything away from these people at all. And I will tell you a year from now again. This article does describe some accurate participants. But it also has a lot of speculation and conjecture. I absolutely guarantee you, did they don't have the juice to take on chapitos.

    6. I think ABK aka OG Shadow tries to make people think he knows it all, but he doesn't' know jack shit. When he says he knows it "first hand" is just what he has read on Twitter. I bet he probably has never set foot in Mexico. He lives a life watching narco shows on Netflix and considers himself an "expert," just like he does in his Youtube channel. There are are a dime a dozen of his kind on the internet, the internet experts who claim to know it all but show no substance. What a joke!

I don't care if you don't believe any of it or not makes no difference to me. All I did was speak what I know to be true. The Mexican federal government released him so that they dont have to extradite him to the USA. Miguel Felix Gallardo, Ernesto Fonseca, and RCQ will never set foot in the USA. What they know could bring down the mexican government as we know it.
