Emma arrives at Brooklyn courthouse as the trial of El Chapo begins

Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat

The wife of El Chapo, Emma Coronel made her way to the Brooklyn court entrance, complete with her very own government “umbrella holder”, rushing past shoulder to shoulder  reporters, photogs and a long line of citizens waiting to enter.

Inside, proceedings began where juror drama left off last week.  Juror number 1 ended last week with a refusal of Cogan to allow her off the jury.  She was sobbing in the hallway waiting to speak to Cogan.  She said she was upset because she thought people at her place of employment figured out she was serving on the El Chapo case.  She works for a media company.  Cogan listened to her but decided there just was no reason or hardship to dismiss her, and that was that.

Or so we thought.

Today she arrived at court bearing a doctors letter insisting juror number 1 could not serve for medical reasons.  The letter listed those reasons.

“I got a handwritten letter which details medical issues that have been brought about by her selection,” Judge Cogan told attorneys.  He went on to say it would be pointless to further question her as it would result in another breakdown.

Defense and government attorneys agreed to select a new juror to replace number 1.

Chapo acknowledged his wife Emma with a slight wave.  His request for a personal greeting or hug was denied by the court.

  2. For all you haters that says Chapo snitched.....U.S. law enforcement sources connected to Guzmán told Fox News the accused drug lord is generally very quiet and well-behaved in custody, and keeps almost entirely to himself behind bars. But officials also say he's not talking, and has refused to cooperate with any type of intelligence sharing or plea agreement – even with the caveat of long-term protection for his 29-year-old beauty queen wife, and twin seven-year-old daughters.

    1. the government has never offered plea talks.

    2. During Chapo's several previous arrest in Mexico it's documented that he was very willing and actually did snitch. In the U.S. he hasn't been offered a plea deal so that he can snitch. That fact that he's quite and keeps to himself is irrelevant, what did you expect? Him watching Netflix while drinking Corona beers with the guards?

    10. 6:55 his attorneys incl Balarezo confirmed last week the gov never approached them for a deal, nor did they ask for plea talks. You are correct they are made, and made foolishly often, but made most frequently. Even wanted to with Mochomo who they called a monster. but he refused.

This is a 50M dollar price tag trial. They purpose is simplistic and most people can figure it out, they want the big catch, they example of how our tax dollars that fund the drug war are well spent. The Woodlawn Vase on the shelf.

    13. Why would you offer a plea agreement to someone who once was the biggest drug lord? The gov wanna make an example of el chapo. And if you wanna be a drug lord you would just end up locked up like him.

  3. Did Chapo give her a secret hand sign? You know what they say, "The Hand is Quicker Than The Eye!"

  4. I can’t imagine how Chapo and his older children would be OK with Emma Coronel’s behavior. She seems to be lapping up the limelight, and certainly has no qualms about documenting her luxurious (organized crime-funded) lifestyle on social media. I know the outcome in this trial is already decided (save for sentencing), but Coronel’s behavior must be sending Balarezo and CO. up the wall.

    1. Uhh shes his wife and she walked into court whats so bad about that lol? Its not her fault the media snaps video and photos of her. She is there because she is allowed to and she wants to support her husband. The mafia bosses in Culiacan most certainly approved her actions.

    1. I would not want to be on that jury. I'd be worried about getting whacked to instill fear in the other jurors for finding him guilty.

  12. Even without doing time she gets herself impegnated by a fucking 50 year old guy who'll be a grandpa when they become teenagers really depraved the lack of responsibility in this bitch. She chose an elevated single motherhood with a legacy rather than forming a functioning family who knows if she'll even be able to date without the permission or prior arrangement from some criminals watching her just awful how many lives she has destroyed.
