3 from Naples Italy, disappear after selling fake equipment to CJNG

Chivis Martinez for Borderland Beat

January 31, 2018, via WhatsApp was the last time anyone heard from three Italian men from Naples. Family members report that 60-year-old Raffaele Russo, his 25-year-old son Antonio Russo and his 29-year-old nephew Vincenzo Cimmino, were in Tecalitlán, Jalisco, on that last day of January when they last spoke to the men.

In the conversation with relatives they relayed that they had been stopped by police that day.

WhatsApp to Russo’s son Daniele (above)
"Daniele, we were putting gasoline and stopped by the police, two police motorcycles and a police car ordered 'follow us' [...] now we are behind the motorcycles that said 'follow us' [...] and the car is behind us." That was the last communication from the men.
At that point the trio disappeared, along with the two white SUV’s they were aboard.

That is until this weekend, when Jalisco State Attorney General Raul Sanchez, conducted a news conference to announce that four municipal police officers in Tecalitlan, three men and a woman, “confessed” to “handling the Italians over to members of an organized crime group who operate in the municipality of 13 thousand people.
At a soccer match in Naples a banner was displayed demanding the liberation of the men
Although Sanchez did not name the group, it is CJNG that has control of the area.

It is a fact that any municipality that is a “narco plaza,’ is controlled by whichever cartel has dominance in the area.  This includes city hall and municipal police.  Police are used to pick up people and delivering them to the cartel in charge.  Presumably that is what happened in this case.

Mayor Victor Diaz Contreras stated that this was an “isolated occurrence”.

The officers “confessed” to the abduction, and declared their orders came from the highest command of the Tecalitlán police department.

Sanchez says that both the mayor and police chief are under investigation.  As of now, the Jalisco United force has taken over the police department. Sanchez also stated that Russo was using a false ID, passing himself off as Mexican when checking into hotels, under the name “Carlos Lopez’.

Authorities chastised the family of the missing men for giving them false information that impeded the investigation.  They were projecting the men as simple tourist only in the region  for the day.  As it turns out they had been at a hotel for several days in nearby Ciudad Guzmán.

The family says they were told by authorities, that police from Tecatitlán, would have received a thousand pesos to deliver the Italians to organized crime.  That amounts to 53 USD.

Records indicate that Raffele Russo was arrested three years ago in Campeche, for fraud and corruption, but there is no information as to the disposition of the case.

The men sell equipment and machinery.

Reports say the goods are “knock-offs” or counterfeit and the goods recently sold was construction tools and also counterfeit plant lights bearing the Bosch, the high end German manufacture.  A family member says the good are manufactured in China.

It is reported knocked-off machinery and “Bosch” plant lights and generators had been sold to CJNG.

Family member concede that Russo has a criminal record but say “just for small things”.  But he did spend three years in an Italian prison for organized crime.
March in Naples, Italy

However, Italian press reports indicate he is tied to the Italian Mafia and may be involved with money laundering.  Some Mexican media are saying it is not about counterfeits goods, which they can get direct from China, but about drugs specifically Meth.

This was posted on El Universal; “The Russo family belongs to an Italian mafia gang called The Magliari, (the merchants)- Rafaelle spent three years in jail for fraud and at the time of his disappearance was selling fake Bosch machinery in Guadalajara. They suspect he sold fake machinery to the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación.”

The Magliari are dedicated to counterfeiting and fraud.

  1. Selling counterfeit goods to the most dangerous criminal organization was a big NO NO. That is what happens when you try to swindle your way for profits!
Not Ironic that officials were responsible for their disappearances. However, I do find it odd to risk ones employment and possible incarceration for those who truly don’t give a damn to those civil servants (officials).
And yet they never learn do they!

    1. Can't really blame them, blame the Mexican Government that bows their head to other countries just so the top officials can eat well while the people who may have great education or great skills have to work long hard hours and get paid hardly anything. A police position is the low man in the totem pole, don't be surprised if they were intercepted by a cartel or if they themselves were told by their commander to hand them over. And to be clear for all we know it wasn't even the CNG that did this, could all be a guise to bring heat to them, you seen the news recently? Military choppers have been sent to Tijuana to control the killings by CNG. Seems like they are going after them full force now more than ever. It will be interesting to see what happens. Juarez Cartel was almighty till the federation decided to mingle in their matters. No one has ever really taken their plaza away either maybe something to learn from for the other cartels . (But they did start the air trafficking and have a straight shot from Sinaloa and Durango Up through the Chihuahua desert it's all about location location location)
The Italian guys were not there for good intentions, giving fake names even their families gave fake aliases, then passing off counterfeits? One thing is knowing you are buying counterfeit with the expectation of quality issues and another is finding out you're being scammed by some out of Towners. Can't say I feel like they were innocent to be honest

      See your point.
Let’s just hope that all these military apprehensions and interventions can put a stop to all the madness in Mexico. Many good people have suffered too long.
Unfortunately, the corruption practices of political power will continue. A norm which has been adopted and practiced from its beginning. Where Constituent services are not available. Rather impossible.

Well, the mexican polesias municipales may not be the guilty pendejos, specially when the United Jaliska Polesias get to kick out the municipales and keep their jobs, that is Mando Unico tactics to knock off the competition, and Mando Unico will never take 53 dollars to kidnap and deliver anybody, they'd rather kill'em for free...

    6. @1:02 you talk too highly of the "Federation". The only reason anyone (CDS), got a jump on Juarez cartel was because the feds in both the U.S. and Mexico captured many of it's leaders when the war began.
Some dude whose last name was Sanchez from CDJ was caught early 2008 in Ahumada as well as another dude known as KiKi someshit. These two players alone from CDJ caught early in the fight CDJ vs CDS would have really turned the tables much sooner in favor of their cartel if their arrests did not happen believe me! Then some character Diego was arrestef about two years later.
You have no idea how powerful these guys where in the cartel.

    2. People love playing the cultural victim hood game. How far does it go back? Every group in history can go back and cry about something. Last I heard, fellow Africans sold countrymen into slavery, and it still happens. The Aztecs were totally peaceful though, no human sacrifice or anything like that? Tribes , nations, and all kinds of groups of peopl have been doing bad shit to each other forever. Also can’t help but notice that the countries most screamed at for any past wrongdoing are the ones who have recognized it and currently try to allow people to work hard, keep their personal property, and not be murdered willy nilly by their government. Funny we don’t hear many people bitching about how China killed 10’s of millions when communism swept through, or how communism in Venezuela is killing hundreds of thousands. Capitalism and democratic governments aren’t perfect, but they have produced countries with the highest number of people living better and easier than ever before in history. Maybe life being so easy is part of the problem that leads people to find the smallest problem and blow it up as large as possible, just needing to find some meaning in a world where those who live in westernized cultures from Europe, to Asia, to south and North America, no longer have to carry water in buckets and kill their own food. Just a thought. Try and fix things that happen now and be a good person, it would go a long way instead of seeing who can scream victim the loudest. And haven’t the Italian and Mexican crime groups had longstanding history of relationships? These guys were not just vacationing in a small municipality, it’s not like this happened while they were down in the Yucatán. Will be interesting if these guys were connected high up in Italy. Might we see the sad sight of the jefes killing their own or passing off innocents as the party responsible in order to make amends. The sicarios and halcones get screwed by their own all the time. Can’t imagine that those who take that job are not aware, which makes me sad to think how little choice or hope they must have to still go into that line of work. Mexico is full of lovely, hard working, and generally fun and happy people who enjoy life, even with the shit that goes on daily. I hope and pray that one day soon Mexicans will stand up and take their country back from the small cabal of politicians and criminals who abuse and rob the other 99% of their own people. Keep up the good work BB, it is appreciated by English speakers who give a shot about Mexico, and can’t depend on the MSM to cover the issue and not lie in pursuit of their ideology and financial gain.

I'm sure they know how to traffick as well, they have turkey as their main source of heroin. With the amount of authentic fine Italian exports that leave Italy by cargo ships I'm sure they know how to hide cargo and who to pay once the cargo arrives at the docks. Wow,, did u figure that out all by yourself,, or did the people at the movie shop tell u about the book and movie that came out 10 years ago..the authors name is Roberto saviano,, which is an excellent read,, much better than the flick..there’s a huge contract on his dome for all of the secret truths he exposed on some of the most powerful crime families in Europe.. these dummy’s were just asking for it,,, fucking with an extremely dangerous gang of psychos that have more associates and crooked cops(as we just read who drove these Babosos is to their doom),, than almost any other group in Mexico is clearly underestimating their reach..just because your group is a big deal back home,, doesn’t mean you have any pull or backup in a country as harsh as Mexico.. these payasos had a very scary and painful exit to the next life... lesson learned for any foreigner who thinks they can pull off scams in Mexico by underestimating the stereotypical lazy siesta taking local.. man I miss Mexico,,, just too sketchy to go to playa bruhas in Sinaloa where I learned to surf from the locals..que triste

  23. Sadly, more bad press for Mexico. These guys sound like a bunch of idiots who had what's coming to them(Vincenzo might be innocent and got taken into the mud by his uncle, though) I wish people would stop taking things at face value and look into things more deeply. Assuming the details of this story are true; Italians should stop wasting their sympathy and write these dudes off.

  36. They were probably trading machinery for meth. Makes sense. Meth dirt cheap in Mexico. New and growing drug in Europe and Asia. The goombahs probably made the deal. Then the cartel (CJNG), picked them up and got their money, and or dope back. Why wouldn't they? Dumbasses shoulda went straight to the airport, and got outta Dodge.

    1. 11:27 ..and what is the news?
Pirated goods, weapons, undue influence, drug precursors, are nothing to the kidnappings for profit the Mexicans have to suffer and out up with because no money is good enough for the narco-politicians and "businessmen" that own mexico.
Pirated goods is just part of the payment...
--but you are not going to pay me with a Russian tie or Chinese call ones brand "x" i'd rather steal a full container and give it away, truth is the Chinese are buying Mexico eagerly while others in possession of the foulest shitholes in the world try to extort 40 billion cash for a Chinese Wall between "their country" and mexico...

  42. Pretty armature & reckless by CJNG. Its better to have friends than unknown enemies. CJNG does most of its business in Europe. Very easy targets for La Cosa Nostra. Mexican Cartels should grow up and focus on business rather than barbaric butchering of innocent people. No respect for life. If these men are alive, Mencho you should think twice and return them safely. Otherwise Europe will become a hunting ground. As they say, happy hunting.
