Journalist Killed in Nuevo Laredo Tamaulipas. He wrote about electoral violence in Mexico

Posted by DD
Sources;  NYT,   Infolliteras

Saturday, January 13, in the middle of the afternoon the 77 year old journalist Carlos Dominguez Rodriguez was murdered while in his car while maneuvering on the streets in downtown Nuevo Laredo.  His daughter was in the car with him but was not injured.  He is the second journalist killed in the country so far in 2018.

State  security spokesman Luis Alberto Rodriguez told The Associated Press.   the body had stab wounds and there may have been gunshots.and said they were investigating to see if his death was related to his work.

Dominguez had worked for different print media outlets, including the Diario de Nuevo Laredo newspaper, but he was currently an independent journalist who wrote opinion columns for news websites, Rodriguez and other journalists said.  The journalist had a political column and did not work for any media at this time, although he previously had a job at El Diario de Nuevo Laredo .

If it is confirmed that Dominguez was murdered for his work, he would be the first journalist slain for his profession in the new year after a deadly 2017 that saw at least 10 killed in what international press groups called a crisis for freedom of expression in Mexico.

Tamaulipas' government released a statement saying it "will act firmly against any attack on freedom of expression and the labor of communicators."

  In his last column, published Friday, Carlos Dominguez spoke of the violent events during the electoral period.  In that column he wrote;

"the violence or the elector season makes the ground in Mexican tremble.  Ridiculous speeches are used to hide the failure of the federal government in matters of public safety.

"As if it were an insinuation to violate the electoral process in its infancy, the bloody events have intensified in quantity and brutality since the beginning of pre-campaign activities for the presidency of the Republic.
In a season when tranquility is supposed to reign for citizens to scrutinize the characters that are fighting for the Presidency of theMexican government, the assassinations of politicians have become more abundant than ever and impunity is at the height of extremely violent events.

"And as always, this generalized violence becomes prolific in the State of Mexico, Morelos, Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, Nayarit, Chihuahua, Queretaro, Zacatecas, Sonora, Baja California and Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Jalisco, Puebla, Veracruz, Tabasco, Quintana Roo and Mexico City ".

(DD note;  I is surprising that Dominguez did not include Tamaulipas  on that list considering that since the year 2000 to date, there have been 14 journalist killed in Tamaullpas, the second most lethal to the press according to the organization Article 19.)

And he concluded: "Today as never before, Mexico is really a red center of violence in the American hemisphere, only surpassed by Venezuela, a country where a government of citizen submission is exercised that overcomes all the atrocities that have occurred in Cuba, Nicaragua, Guatemala and el Salvador".

The governor of Tamaulipas, Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca, expressed his condolences to the journalist's family through a message on his Twitter account. "My commitment to them and the journalistic community of Tamaulipas that this homicide will not go unpunished."

Tamaulipas has been wracked by drug cartel violence and the state is one where organized crime has often been able to intimidate media outlets into silence through violence and threats.

Both the United Nations and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights have expressed concern about the impunity surrounding the killings of journalists in Mexico

As reported on Borderland Beat, in Guerrero state in southern Mexico, this past week several journalists reported being roughed up. Bernandino Hernandez, who has worked with the AP, said state police beat, kicked and dragged the journalists.

Earlier in January, a news editor was killed in Mexico City in a robbery apparently unrelated to his profession.

  1. Mexico had the most killings of journalists in the world last year with 13. Second was two countries tied at second with 11 each. At this rate Mexico will keep making strides in the wrong direction. I understand why they kill the messenger. But it is just outright inhuman.

    1. DD Carlos Dominguez Rodriguez did not mention Tamaulipas, because that was his only insurance, however American citizen and head of crime in the state Francisco Javier Garcia Cabeza de Kagadas de Vacas is not going to tolerate disrespect for the federal government of his buddy EPN and needs to protect the good name of his other good buddy Ricardo Anaya PAN bossman, American citizen and presidential candidate already blessed to "win" 2018 election by both PRI and PAN that said No Thanks to Margara FECAL.
THE HYPOCRISY of Cagadas de Vacas is limitless, after all he sent Osiel Cardenas Guillén to prison after getting his financing to run for Reynosa Mayor when Osiel was nuch prettier and has been getting his sicarios in the CDG and Los setas murdered to keep them silent...journalists should be no problem, --sending "robbers" to kill them is useful,
but fooling everybody all the time is priceless,
--feels like we habemus one more president in the making, Cabeza de Cagadas de Vacas, ready with all the lying through the ass it may take...

    4. @11:48- I'm sure they were bought to sell to the highest bidding cartel. They need to purchase a set of balls or the US special forces. They could take them all down quietly and over the weekend.

    5. @04:07 really? The knights templar had over 3000 halcones in one town, Apatzingan. Thats without the Sicarios and grameros, how exactly are US special forces going to take out a cartel over a weekend? Even the autodefensas, who had thousands of men chasing the KT all over the state of Michoacan, took months to get rid of them, and they knew exactly where they were. The AD intel would certainly be better than US intel on a cartel since they are on the ground in the same area as the cartel.

    7. 8:13 Michoacán Autodefensas - ex members of el milenio, LFM, CJNG, members of the templarios themselves like Los Viagras people that belonged to the tuta group people that belonged to Kike Plancarte, El Migueladas group people from the coast, from lazaro Cardenas the federal and state goverments, and the Avocado farmers and Limon farmers who didn't want to pay extortion fees.

    8. Otis, it's the hopelessness and fear of people like u that will keep Mexico on its knees. For u to think that the Knights Templar or the cartel infiltrated autodefencas would be a blip on any US armed force radar shows how small minded u are. I also believe the Mexican armed forces could do the job if they had the will. They surely have the equipment that my hard earned tax dollars paid for. And yes, over the weekend, and from horseback if needed. ;)

    9. @6:43 - yes, I think so. A lot of people won't take any responsibility anyway but I think for a lot of people it will open eyes.

  3. In 2010, while living on Texas Austin to be exact , I was very naive and I enjoyed going to Nuevo Laredo to eat tortas at the fondas near the plaza and afterwards go watch the tecolotes semi professional baseball team play. One day I swear on my loved ones this is true. I had my white tecolotes de Nuevo Laredo jersey on eating having lunch, at I'm going to reserved the name of establishment for safety. The governor of the state came along with some local politicians to eat an talk to the press about trying to save the stadium and the tecolotes as an alternative for something healthy for the community. Everyone's is talking and saying how good things are. I got up from my table and I made a comment out loud to where the media and the politicians heard the following "los tecolotes es lo unico bueno que nos queda en Nuevo Laredo y es mi deporte favorito como puede Ser que nos quieran quitar eso" I swear that after like 20 minutes after the attention was no longer on me. 3 guys started to sit near me and followed me outside,to where I felt "oh shit wtf I'm going to do" if it wasn't for a newspaper prensa man on a taxi, told me hey "huerco subete y agachate" he took me straight to the border crossing with U.S. and told me run. I probably wouldn't be around. I feel for the people in Mexico and especially for the press people. Because I want to believe if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be able to write this. The first time I ever shared except with my wife. Cause she always asked me why I never went back to watch the tecolotes my spirit and joy for baseball died that day in Nuevo Laredo, while lay down on the back seat hiding with the guy from la prensa who saved me. News reporters hold a special place on my book Please don't be scare to tell the truth. I did that day and it almost cost my life...prayers are with you and your family. Gooo tecolotes.

    2. Wow!
I remember the tecolotes. An inspiring baseball team with their stadium by the river park . A favorite hangout when I was a young kid spending summer with grandparents and cousins. The calle Guerrero with its placitas and the luchas.
So much has changed since then.
      Truly a ghost town now.

All thanks to the corruption and drug cartel.
Not so many Americans shop there now.

  4. In Mexico the Navy and army work for some cartels Depends where they are and depends to which cartel...So those weapons are used to destroy competition of the highest bidder... nothing more nothing less... They do get some of the guys but come on there's like 1 guy and 3 successors waiting they turn...It has not helped the stragedy they have used...In Reynosa the Navy works for the CDG been said over and over and some are legit no doubt they are but these cartels have they hands into the Mexico DEFENSE against them.. so missles or more troops matter's nothing when the money buys the protection

    1. The Army and Navy are mostly incorruptible I believe. They lead the fight against the lawless among us. How much you gonna offer to a General if you are some random cartel scum?

    2. The Mexican navy needs their marine weapons to make IEDs to start a terrorism campaign that "forces" the intervention of private American intelligence and Military contractors, same sit they did in Iraq after the "mission accomplished" celebrations, they made off with trillions of dollars from the US treasury debit cards, charged to chinese bank creditors.
Mexico will pay with the nalgas for the weapons and the mercenaries, ain't no money there.

  7. Where is the UN??????? The US can't act alone...this to me is the biggest crime of all, along with Femicide, that these guys get away with. This is exactly what the UN, and the other Central American, as well as even Canada, that these atrocities are allowed to continually occur.I don't want anymore US led intervention. It has to be UN, NATO, or someother multinational group. At least there could a somewhat less chance of full on come up.

    2. Believing more and more like the US can care less on Mexico’s epidemic of violence. A thoughtless process to keep them engulfed in chaos. While other political agendas are implemented elsewhere in other countries leaving our neighbors hang to dry ( it’s citizens).

    3. I think youre right E..I think the US gov wants them all to kill eachother off, and take it all over. The whole biz. Wouldn't surprise me at all. They could end the cartels in hours if motivated. Why are they not motivated?

  10. It’s sad that they can find a journalist in the blink of an eye. They can find a twitter activist. They can find a protester. Shit they can find somebody that doesn’t pay for protection. But they cannot find MR.MZ or MECHO. But hey whatever funds the downfall of America right?
