Mazatlan Sinaloa: 19 Killed in Military Clash

Translated by Yaqui for Borderland Beat from El Debate
Midnight in Mexico

Extra material from La Jornada
July 1, 2017
The last night of June and the first night of July began with an attempted and successful kidnapping but ended with a fierce confrontation between Sinaloan Authorities and armed gunmen equipped with tactical gear and high caliber weapons.  Nineteen suspected criminals were killed in the confrontation with Mazatlan Municipal Police, Sinaloa State Police and members of the Mexican Army and Navy. Five uniformed men were wounded.

Cristobal Castaneda Camarillo, the State's Security spokesman says that the confrontation began around eight pm near the communities of La Amapa and Villa Union at the Junction of Mexican Federal Highway #5 and the road to Aguaje de Costilla. Municipal police officers led by Mazatlan's Public Security Secretary, Joel Soto, were attacked by the 19 individuals moving in four trucks approximately 22 kilometers south of the port city. Camarillo made an official statement around Midnight.

The armed group arrived at Villa Union to kidnap a man known as "El Llagas". Two men came out to try to defend him and were immediately executed. According to neighboring witnesses the criminals did successfully kidnap "El Llagas". About 8:15 a black van arrived at a house in the Lopez Portillo neighborhood of Villa Union. The assassins noticed a third man inside the house and henceforth entered the kitchen and executed him, repeatedly shooting him. They then made off with ''El Llagas''.

Concerned citizens of the neighborhood who became alarmed by the sound of gunfire erupting in the night notified the nearest Municipal authorities just a few blocks away. As police units patrolled the area the armed group fled toward La Amapa and the persecution by authorities began. Back up units of the State Police and Army and Navy Patrols joined in and at the junction of Mexico #5 and the Road to Aguaje de Costilla, about 8 kilometers away, is where the authorities and criminals clashed for nearly an hour.

19 of the suspects were killed in the fierce gunfight; five policemen wounded and /or injured, two reportedly seriously, including one woman. Red Cross Paramedics came to offer first aid and transport the wounded to several Mazatlan medical institutions. Two criminals were taken into custody; Jhonathan Ulises "N"and Jose Lourdes "N". The whereabouts of the remaining suspects and the kidnapped man are unknown at this time.

Three vehicles were secured after the confrontation and another in La Amapa. Twelve AK-47s, two Ar 15s , one shotgun and seven pistols were also recovered by the Authorities. These were the numbers according to the official bulletin.

Just a few hours after the bloody gun battle an unidentified  lifeless body of a man was found half buried in a vacant lot under a tree by a neighbor who had gone there to cut wood and he notified authorities. It is unknown at this time if the discovery is related.

The Mazatlan City Council has already met to discuss the "Villa Union massacre" that has shocked all of Sinaloa. City Council Secretary Jose Joel Boucieguez says: "the the heads of the state's government will take all necessary measures to restore security in the region and make Mazatlan an exemplary municipality for development and tourism at the national level.

ernesto alejando vadillo trueba, before coming to sinaloa's 9a Zona militar he was in tamaulipas, during a very heavy season of ambushes against the military that always ended with dozens of sicarios killed in action during Viejidio Cantu governorship, I don't know if giniral vadillo had a cozy relationshp with FUERZA Herculos, the polesia estatal de cantu but he will be working now with the new narco-governors goobernador "coppel", since 2016, like presiding over the montages vs La Chapa and co.

    1. 7:22; Jaja, very bad! But Villa Union isn't exactly Mazatlan. It's the first town at the end of the highway that connects Sinaloa and Durango, and that also is located along highway 15 that runs north and south along the west coast of Mexico. Villa Union is maybe 30-40 minute drive south from Mazatlan, but is still in the 3100 square km of the Municipio de Mazatlan.
What doesn't add up to me is the Policía Municipal in Mazatlan only carry small arm assault rifles but many photos show injuries that require a 30mm or more to inflict... so Marines, army, or other bad guys with must have played larger role than story indicates. Anyone else notice this?

    4. 12:41; It's funny how you think anything that happens in Sinaloa is "CDS or BLO". Jaja! That's because you want it to be but that's simply ridiculous!! Were the Latin Kings or MS13 responsible for the 40+ shootings in Chicago this weekend? Like CDS is gonna go after some small time mota distributor. Sinaloa has thousands of small time traffickers like Illinois has thousands of drug dealers and with this comes disputes.

    5. 4:02 this guy i have a brother that lives in that area which has been disputed for a while now its los mazatlecos of chapo isidro who have gained ground around el rosario Cosala and are aggresively fighting for that whole area around Mazatlan against el Chonecas who is with chapos sons . ms 13 and latin kings are street gangs who are over exaggerated

      Delete
    6. ms13 is not over exaggerated son. if you want to move product through el salvador or honduras well you better have the ok from ms13. if not you will get caught up period. the drug game has gotten bigger than people think. gangs that can control countries are employed by these drug cartels.

  15. Headline is a tad misleading. La Union is far away from Mazatlan (20 KM at least). They do the same thing for shootings near Acapulco.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 6:28; Villa Union is important for mota and poppy harvests that come from all the south sierra of Sinaloa. Also many harvests from Acapulco to Nayarit are sold in Villa Union because after Villa Union there are check stop areas for drogas and imigrants on carretera 15. The buyers from Villa Union know more organized buyers in Mazatlan and Culiacán that can access secure routes into any city in the USA where they have regular and confident buyers.

      Delete
  16. They meant to write highway 15 because Villa Union is off of 15 and 5 is on Baja peninsula. Villa Union is the second market for mota from the sierra after Salto because Villa Union is at end of the old highway Durango Mazatlan and many trucks driving highway 15 pickup and take to frontera. Villa Union is always calm and we don't know what this is about. I am from Walamo 7 km from Villa Union.

I, would expect at least one or two cop casualties they would repor aside from the five injured but this is ridiculous.
If this is what it takes to boost morale within the police forces then I, guess that is what they report!!!

    3. Wow your ignorant. Ar type weapons shoot srtaighter than the ak just basex on design. Delete
    4. 9:08 "Since the soldier's family got murdered" some people have used the incident to hang around "masked for protection", many of them foreign security contractors/Soldiers of Fortune mercenaries, some work for the cartels, but most of them like a secure government check, even mexican government check, instead of the eternal promises of fame and riches and a few grams of shit a week the cartels pay instead of cold hard cash.
Prior to that, before they finally caught up with el Barbas, he was almost captured, barely escaped, and the federal police.commander that laid the trap was murdered when he arrived to his parents home, federal police agents were.waiting for.him with orders to kill him, part of the program of assassinations of genaro garcia luna's commanders.
I mean, federal police agents and soldiers are not safe from their own brothers at arms, and director of their police corporations, imagine common citizens!!!

There's been more than one occation where I know they've had Marina's killed but the papers mention nothing of it. I read many comments that doubt the government's figures regarding number of law enforcement personnel wounded, that is, implying that there were more dead or wounded than the 5 personnel reported. The implication is that the sicarios would have inflicted more casualties and the government for some reason is not reporting them. I don't buy into that. Narcos are used to killing their victims by ambushing them, and many, many times their victims are unarmed civilians.
When these heroic sicarios meet up with trained and motivated law enforcement personnel, especially marines, they invariably get their butts kicked.

  29. One thing is clearly evident, the capture and extradition of El chapos has transformed Sinaloa into a war zone. Confrontations have been escalated to a high. Disruption and chaos which was practically nonexistent is present now.
From small time drug gangs which have become brazen to attempt such behavior in a state where order and law of capos were golden.
Trying times are factors for such in Sinaloa.
Question is ? How or what outcome will arise from such. And who will prevail?
I'm sure suppliers need reassurance/ guarantees.
