Note from Chivis...and another plea for help

Chivis Martinez for Borderland Beat

Just when I think something is solved…..

We were riding high and smoothly after my last effort to recruit help for Borderland Beat.

Fact of the matter is, we are now hurting ...big time.  The blog work cannot be on the shoulders of 2 or 3, we need a strong team of at least 4 regular contributors, that are willing to contribute 3 posts a week, and another 3 or 4 folks that will contribute a 1 or two a week.

We also have an option of Guest Reporters.  Anyone can become a guest reporter.  And no set number of contribution is expected, it may even be that you want to share something and it is a onetime event.  It all is appreciated.

Truth is, Borderland Beat will not be able to exist if we do not get solid commitments. I have been on a semi medical leave and continue to have treatments.

I have not publicly discussed my issue, but on last July 3rd, I awoke at 3am with excruciating pain in my legs and became non-ambulatory.  No more walking, no more standing, driving etc.  It is an autoimmune disorder that attacked the nerves in my lower extremities and did quite a bit of damage.

That said, I am doing great.  The July attack was my second.  And by far worse than the previous attack.  But I am no longer using the wheelchair, unless I am having a bad day physically, but rare, and even the walker I am using far less and trying to strengthen my good nerves and muscles.   Luckily I was in pretty good condition.  I can now walk “a ways” without aid, but need to be near a rail or wall “In case”.  I believe I am going to be able to walk one day and drive and travel!

Sadly, I tried getting down the staircase myself after the attack and fell, broke my leg, and ankle, so until that heals completely….don’t know the true prognosis.  BUT honestly I am doing much better than expected.  I thought I should explain to you all why I do drive bys and no longer at BB each day.

DD has picked up my duties and Otis has been invaluable.  Wachito  and the others were great but it is not easy to work for free, one has to believe in the project, and I think the project created by Buggs is an important link for English language people to know the true scope of  Mexican Organized Crime.

DD is going on a leave of absence.  I will push myself to do more.  But that is not the answer.  And Otis is in law school and cannot do more.

So I ask those who signed up last time and sorta disappeared, let me know via EMAIL what your plan is.

And for those of you wanting to help….please let me know or DD or Otis.  Our email addys are at the upper right.

Thank you all for your good wishes, and if I have not replied to your message please forgive me, sometimes it isn’t easy.  But I will try to do more, and better. But honestly, the future of BB does not look good.

Abrazos.................................

    1. *****TO ALL OUR GOOD FRIENDS THAT HAVE OFFERED THEIR HELP AND PRAYER FOR CHIVIS SHE HAS ASKED ME TO POST THIS LITTLE NOTE. SHE HAS HAD A LITTLE BIT OF A SETBACK AND IS GOING IN TOMORROW FOR SOME TESTS AND EVALUATION. CURRENTLY SHE CAN'T WALK OR SIT UP AND CAN'T USE HER COMPUTER. SHE WANTS TO APOLOGIZE FOR ANY DELAY IN RESPONDING TO YOUR OFFERS FOR HELP. ALWAYS THE OPTIMIST SHE TOLD ME SHE THOUGHT SHE MIGHT BE ABLE TO LOG ON TOMORROW EVENING. (BUT NOT IF CAN STOP HER). CHIVIS HAS ALWAYS HANDLED GUEST REPORTER WORK BUT I TOLD HER TONIGHT THAT IF SHE COULD GIVE ME VERBAL INSTRUCTIONS OVER THE PHONE I WOULD START TRYING TO HANDLE SOME OF IT. THOUGH I COULD NEVER FILL HER SHOES ALL YOU FRIENDS MAY BE HEARING FROM ME RATHER THAN CHIVIS IN THE SHORT TERM UNTIL SHE IS BETTER. KEEP UP YOUR PRAYERS AND POSITIVE THOUGHTS FOR CLIVIS.

  2. Prayers for your health and healing from far away Chivis.

But as someone suggested some time back, I think the solution lies in incentivizing people. Passion alone is never enough, as anyone who has run a business will attest to. People burn out, they get tired, but they still go to work the next day. But I get Buggs and your point and fully respect it.

Again, I'll be praying for you daily in my devotions. God bless you.

    4. @4:53. Bull Dog, it is really easy to help. If you are a good translator, and you see an article in Spanish that you think would be good on BB, translate it for yourself as a guest reporter. Send a draft of it to me or chivis for us to look at and one of us will send you easy instructions on how to post it. Both of our email addresses are at the upper right corner. We would love for you to start posting stories and it would be a big help. Thanks, DD

    5. @7:48PM Thanks Sol but as an organization we are not really set up to have paid staff. But between the active reporters and administrators we probably have at least 20 cumulative years of proof that there are people willing to do this as a labor of love for Mexico without getting paid anything.

See my response to Bull Dog about how to help and give it some thought. Thanks DD

I used to read "The Selections of Reader's Digest" faithfly every month, and buy their book of the month and read it in less than a week, it opened a lot of windows to the world for me, same with BB, I have read this and maybe other documents from you, all on the same vein, looks like too much Jernigas been there for a good day.

    1. @3:08pm Chema you are full of crap. BB has been doing this since 2009. During that time we have had a BUNCH of reporters. Chivis has been here since 2009 and posted more stories and comments than any of us. I have been here since 2010. So far none of us has been killed. I think you are a yellow ...No I won't say it but you can use your imagination.

Sad though. I wish we knew more about him. He needs some recognition. All I remember him being from gulf cartel and trying to beat the zetas.

  14. Dear Chivis- After reading your postime I wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude for all you have done for all of us.Also,my belief in miracles is a huge part of my own life story. After my own bout with polymyositis, that left me unable to move my arms or legs and was told I would die within 3 months, a miracle happened. It took almost 2 years to regain my ability to use my limbs but I came back to about 80%. I was given a chance to watch my children grow up. I will keep you in my prayers and positive thoughts for your own miracle. God bless you. Grazie from Texas.

  20. Chivis, Thank you and everyone else at BB for your hard work, I've been following the Mexican drug war for about 7 years, started with the El Paso times, Juarez section, and soon found BB. Without Borderlandbeat I would not have a clue what was going on in Mexico, I'm from Liverpool, England. I hope you get enough of a response from this post to keep this site going, otherwise the troubles of Mexico will go unreported.

  21. Sometime back there was alluding to Chivis' health on BB which was alarming but also left the realisation that one simply could not query her on a private and personal matter.

Chivis galvanised many to get out for the Dr. Mireles global protest which I had the good chance to partake in up here in Toronto.

With nothing to contribute to BB I can only pass this idea along from Breitbart online:

"Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities. The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by “A.C. Del Angel” from Reynosa, Tamaulipas."

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @6:12 Jack, you don't know what you are talking about. BB does not have any "black list". Each administrator has a few people that they won't publish their comments for various reasons. I have probably don't have more than a half dozen people that I don't publish. After reading hundreds (if not thousands) of comments you can recognize people by their words they use or their subject matter. Some are racist or bigots, some are just trolls just trying to cause problems, some belong on a conspiracy website. Some just like to criticize or bash BB. Even though I don't publish them some of them continue to post anywhere from 3 to a half dozen of those every day.

Between all the administrators there are probably not more than a dozen or so commenters that we won't publish. When you consider we have thousands of readers per day that is a lot of possible contributors.

  39. How about donations to pay for articles. I would be willing to donate $50 every 6 months. I read this every morning first thing with my coffee. For people from Mexico that write articles $25 to $50 per article is good money here. You get 100 donors and that is going to help. I get up every morning and read what is happening here in Mexico, along with my morning cup of coffee. You could put up a chart showing how much is coming in each month along with a goal. This should take the burden off those of you wonderful caring people that have put in the time to make the world aware of what is happening in Mexico. As long as people in Mexico are assured they are anonymous, they should be willing to help.

Australia is exactly the same as America except for the violence, ( no guns allowed) drugs and gangs. Dime bag in USA costs $100 here. Also, no-ones even heard of the word "wetback". Seriously. I asked. Mexicans fall into the "Exotic" category here.

I have found that I can control the havoc that is wreaked on my body by controlling my exposure to what I put in or on my body: no chemicals- deodorants, shampoos, lotions, toothpaste; so many of these things are loaded with unnecessary components. Food and water must be clean. Watch out for water in the US- they unnecessarily add fluoride. Try an elimination diet; cut out gluten, dairy, nightshades. It is amazing to know how important it is to eliminate toxins, and that you can do it and it can effect change. Through much trial and error, I have found my way to health, and I wish the same for you. I hope that your health improves. Ud. la merece.
