Special ops team raids drug cartels in Northern California

SAN FRANCISCO -An elite law enforcement team is battling foreign drug cartels operating in
Northern California. The cartels wreak havoc on the environment and produce pot tainted with toxic chemicals; they are not medical marijuana growers trying to do it right.

No matter what happens with the vote to legalize marijuana, law enforcement sources say the drug cartels will continue to be a serious problem. They pose threats on several fronts.

It's dawn on the Delta. The Department of Fish and Wildlife's special ops unit, and the Marijuana Enforcement Team infiltrates a Mexican drug cartel's marijuana grow.

A signal - a game warden hears someone talking and they land.

1st Game Warden says: "Nothing's going to be good."

2nd Game Warden replies: "This is good and thick swamp land."

They make their way to the grow site and make arrests. Their tracking dog, Phebe, takes down a suspect.

Lt. John Nores, head of the Marijuana Enforcement Team, explains, "That's apprehension bite number 113 in her very long career."

They find thousands of plants, pot drying, and the camp where the workers lived.

Dan Noyes asks: "Who are they and where are they from?"

Nores answers by saying: "A majority of the outdoor trespass growers, not all of them, but a majority of them are from south of our border. California is the epicenter for marijuana cultivation, one of only six true Mediterranean climates in the entire world. It's possible to grow marijuana very effectively here and the organized crime cartels know that as well."

Nores takes video of the raids, and gave some to the I-Team.

At an estimated 2,000 to 4,000 grows across California, the cartels bring in toxic chemicals that are banned here. They block streams, dump fertilizer, weed, insect and rat killer into the water that flows to the plants through plastic piping.

"Those toxics on one marijuana site as an example are killing up to five to 10 miles of creek and every living thing in the creek," Nores said.

They set out poison to keep animals away from the crops.

Nores pointed out dead animals at one cartel marijuana operation saying: "Another rabbit looks like it barely made it out of the grow, which is just right there."

The head of the Marijuana Enforcement Team has documented the deadly aftermath - rabbits, grey fox, a mountain lion, which were all poisoned. A cartel suspect posed with a poisoned golden eagle. Then, there's the case of a 300-pound mother bear that died after eating poison set out in cans of tuna.

Nores told Noyes, "Her little 50 pound baby cub had ingested some of it as well, saw the mother bear expire, was very confused and obviously terrified, climbed up in a tree and died in the V of the tree, of two branches just about 10 feet above her mother."

The threat to hikers, hunters and anglers is serious. Nores tells the I-Team he has found six pungi pits, sharp sticks concealed by leaves, leading to grow sites in the past year. And the raids have found growers that are heavily armed.

A game warden got shot through both legs with an AK-47, during a raid on a cartel grow in the mountains above Los Gatos in 2005. Nores tells Noyes the team has had a total of five shoot-outs since then.

He credits Phebe with preventing many others, as seen in exclusive video of the raids. The team now includes a sniper - they will not be out-gunned again.

"The days of going in with a small team when you might encounter many armed gunman that are trying to defend their multi-million dollar cash crop are gone," Nores said.

Fish and Wildlife has only an 11-man unit to cover the entire state. They do work with local law enforcement and other agencies, but it's just too much to handle with thousands of organized crime grows on public land.

"We don't want 'em in our woods," Nores said. "We don't want 'em to harm our public, and I don't want to see 'em destroying our wildlife and our waterways any more than they already are, so that's our main motivation to keep doing it and we really enjoy stopping the environmental crime on every level we can."

The cartel grows consume millions of gallons of water, which is especially bad in a drought. Most of their marijuana winds up on the East Coast, where it can bring in much more than it can in this state. Simple supply and demand.

  1. For all the legalize it folks here is the equation: like in NYC with cigarette smuggling from south by LCN, they say legalize it and let the government collect taxes what could be wrong with that? Ok great! But what happens when organized crime comes in and because they don't pay tax they are able to undercut the price, now you are paying the cartel because it's cheaper now you are supplying money to cartel that finances violence in not just Mexico, because who gives a fuck about Mexico on this side of the border, but on this side too, as stated above. Don't believe me? How many people play the lottery on the street because their winnings are taxed and in fact they pay better odds,. If it can save a buck John Q Citizen doesn't have qualms about paying organized crime. So, when considering a vote for legalization play the
    tape all the way through.

    1. Do you live inn a state that allows recreational use of Marijuana?? Everyone goes to the dispensary.. there's nothing like being legit when wanting to get a lil high. Speaking of "running the tape" why didn't you bring up alcohol?? Not convenient to your post huh.

    5. Your argument against weed legalization is cigarette smuggling in NYC!!??!?.. I'm sorry but that is a horrible argument! Cigarettes smuggled into the city are coming from places where the tax is cheaper on them than in the city, they are simply bought legally elsewhere, so the tax is still being paid to the IRS, just less so than in NYC.

    2. Many addicts continue to use because they don't wanna go thru the withdrawals of their drug of choice. If you do your research many heroin addicts could easily quit if they didn't get so sick. The last time I checked marijuana is not an addictive drug. Your body does not need it when it doesn't get it. It's psychological not Physiological so your argument is mute against an addict when dealing with marijuana. An addict is not making a marijuana grower grow his marijuana in a remote area, state/federal law and the prospect of getting caught is. Blame who you like but the reality is that every link in the chain carries their own responsibility for their OWN action.

There are very beautiful places off the main roads and trails. The tourist, hikers mostly will never see them unless they like to bushwhack through scrub and poison oak.
Me, I go up in winter/ early spring, when the grows are shut down.
What I don't go for is the pesticide/herbicide crap but in farming country they can spray and poison all they want. Not long after I decided it was time to reassess my life . This pot medicine is just that . POT MEDICNE . I know people that are 60 and smoked it everyday since they were 15 . Sure there was some exception to the everyday term . That was they days they were going nuts trying to find some . I remember nobody wanted to smoke if they had a headache . I never knew it as a painkiller . Maybe my 12 year experience with it was flawed and I was to high and only thought it made a headache worse . This pot medicine is just a way for all these addicts to get high . From what I can assess the legal shit is costing more than the illegal shit . People making money and getting high . The unbiased truth

If you knew you had to live with pain would you rather suffer it or use something like marijuana if it helped? I know many would rather suffer... What bugs me is not having the choice of options for treatment, when I was 15 16 painkillers and such were another universe, something for losers weak people and druggy scum. Looking back I'm glad I found weed so many doctors are on the take, paid to give out crud tablets which make people ill even kill them and i had a huge learning curve ahead of me finding all this out. Truth is, effective long term pain treatments are still a mystery to most doctors.

This has become the biggest environmental threat since clearcut logging was largely stopped on the North Coast. Plenty of grow your own/ do no harm and Mom and Pops are sick of this crap and will vote for 64- legalization , but the big growers are against it for all the obvious reasons........too much regulation, after all the years of complaining it turns out they actually like their outlaw lifestyle and want to keep stashing their cash, minus paying taxes , of course, and take their annual off season trip to wherever, NOT that their is an off season any more , with indoor grows and light dep.
Vote YES on 64 to end prohibition for the guy that just wants to smoke a doobie and not go to jail for it.......think brown and black people and let the chips fall where they may for the growers. Surprise! If you sell beans or corn on the street illegally, and you did not buy them from an authorized middleman, licensed by the government, they will confiscate the load and arrest you, it happened in the 70's with chinese corn

    4. I was just teasing you. The problem with the projections is that old modeling was used except by the Trump campaign. Plus factors of how polling is executed is no longer valid. FOr example, cell phones have replaced landlines, social media and internet replacing newspapers and TV/Radio news, the ground game losing its effectiveness.

the amazing campaign trump conducted could have gone very bad because it was uncharted. He did not have Hillary's billions, so he used rallies, where in those regions it became a part of the regional and state news in papers, websites etc. FREE. That is how he is as a businessman. How that translates as a president could be a huge benefit. I just don't know.

Another thing. If you saw the LA times polling, newscasters and everyone else scoffed at it, because it showed Trump winning at the last month. they used a new system. they followed the same hundreds of voters for the campaign season going back and registering changes they made. very interesting! Myself I changes my mind three times before voting. and I was so disillusioned by our choices I was not going to vote...but I kept my promise to my grandmother to never forsake the greatest privilege we citizens have.

    1. From the Canadian prospective Trump wants 'fair trade' not free trade.Since Mexico and Canada depend so much on exports with US since we are both neighbours. Now our XL Keystone pipeline will get built.Only problem here is we have carbon taxes and US doesn't and that's not likely to change which makes us a little uncompetitive. Our dollar did drop against the US dollar and is expected to drop another 5 cents. It costs $1.26 for a US dollar which is good for exports to the US but horrible for travel to the US.I think Mexico has more to worry about in the coming trade deals but it will take some time for the factories to relocate back to Canada and US like it did to leave.Free trade did make autos somewhat cheaper on sale but not signifinitly-it went into the pockets of the global elites.Mexicans didn't benefit a whole lot, again it went to the elites both global and Mexican.Mexico will also pull a reversal and kick out foreign businesses like restaurants and mining companies.I remember the days when they had a more than 100% tariffs on motorcyles. That's my take on it.

Then again, if no wall, some people (characters) may be not prepared to live extravagantly without a made up and/or legal money trail. Maybe they prepare for this upcoming event during the next 4 years? Either way, the border will end up opening because of the population shift. Doesn't matter if you are Native American or illegal the American's will still bitch about someone working too cheap.

They seem to forget we live in a society where the lower bidders get the work. My opinion is if you are losing your job to a non-English speaking person with 8th grade or less education, that is YOUR fault for being replaceable.

Damn people want an easy 40/hr a week job that pays $25+ an hour with pensions, and benefits. And they want stay at that easy job the rest of their lives with senority... give me a break. That fairy tail story is over. This is America baby! Home of the free, brave, and whoever wants a new life and wants to work their asses off. Pilgrims didn't land here expecting an easy life and you shouldn't either. - El Whitey

    6. 3;13 . Did you vote ? 2:52 the berlin wall ? Maybe in some ways it is comparable in the facet that it could separate relatives but that all . I grew up during the cold war and this was a unrelated and a very very different thing . The soviets didn't have to worry about people wanting in . They built the wall to keep germans from leaving . I think if this wall is ever built it will stand . Oh it will get penetrated regularly but for the most part it will serve its purpose . some drugs will get through despite the wall but it will stop many . It will serve its purpose but wont perfectly . Shit the creative Mexicans may learn to send them through cyberspace .

    7. I'm not scared of a wall because even Trump doesn't have the balls to build it. He is all talk when it comes to immigration just like any other Republican president before him. What I am worried about is 1) His intent to implement stop and frisk of any one, any where for any reason. Sounds like some new age Communist shit to me. Blacks and Hispanics will be stopped disproportionately more than whites as usual. Be prepared for more unarmed citizens being killed all over the country at a higher rate. 2) His banning of certain groups from this country specifically Muslims. 9/11 will be cake walk when radical Muslims already here get even more pissed at their treatment. 3) His requiring ALL Muslim Americans to register as if they are sex offenders. That's right AMERICANS being placed on database because of their religion. Sounds a lot like what Hitler did. 4) Oh yeah he wants to bomb the shit out of ISIS just because its ISIS no other reason. The other shit is not worth repeating because it won't happen. Other than the above Chivis there is absolutely nothing else this country has to worry about with Mr. Trump. I am rather fond of his women should be barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen with no rights mentality though. J/K Chivis.

    8. Too late.for "the wall" plan colombia has thoroughly invaded mexico, plan mexico under ne merida initiative was the start, privatizing drug trafficking and reorganizing it for the proper owners and masters can't be derrailed.
--walls for plane loads from colombia? Not happening...

      Delete
    9. 7:11 Sure they can fly it in from Columbia . They did it before but it seems like they started using to many loads so they diversified . Sure they will use other methods . The thing is all the routs will soon be confronted more heavily . The gloves and the restraints are coming off . Its kinda like a fence I put up in front of somethings I valued . A friend ask me "do you think that fence will stop a theif . I replied "no it will only slow him down so I can get a better shot at him . Any obstacle will have effect. Sure the laughable videos where people are getting right over don't mean the wall is totally ineffective. The wall is replacing one step with having to scale a wall . It does have affect . Funny videos but if you are crossing it is a very real obstacle . When I was those kids age I could stand flat footed and hop from the ground into the back of a tall pickup truck . Cant now and most my age and 20 years younger would have a tough time climbing that wall . I guess the usa will only get the more athletic Mexicans .

  22. Woa ! Your going to get a wide range out of this. It will be taken out of context in so many directions . Stop the dope . Don't know if its even possible . Legalization aint happening in most places . Sure the left coast did it but that's just weed . besides criminals wont reform just because there is no longer money in drugs . Build the wall but take more measures to slow down the drug traffic . To many vehicles in the crossings . Slow it down and search it better . Weed out the corrupt border agents ,and there are many .

  24. Dear 1:08 I am a conservative Mexican American. You are saying the american filt will be kept on my american side of the wall? I suppose that is correct.

However I will go on record that while it is easy to say a wall will be built I doubt it will be. I think in key areas it could and should, but it directs priority to the specific need to tighten security on both borders.

As for Mexico paying for the wall, they will at least contribute to it by a tax that could be imposed as each visitor on the south border, Mexican national or not, pays a toll to enter the US

    1. 40 tons of cocaine flown from colombia "to help the contras lose one more US war" jumped no wall, according to the pilot, he also flew rafail caro quintero away from us agents without enough guns and aviation minister of colombia alvaro uribe velez did not supervise any wall jumping planes.walls are just to keep out the lowly rabble, but their crimes do not compare to state crimes or their partner banksters. Panama papers or the Bahamas or the cayman islands secret trillionaire investors...

    2. Chivis . Vicente Fox said he is not paying for a xxxx wall . I thought about going down and getting a job on the construction . But then again if Mexico is paying for it , its probably pesos , LOL . So much for that idea . Besides Mexicans have taken over the work force in the past 30 years . Believe it of not us citizens used to do it all . in the late 70s and 80s I watched many lose their low paying jobs because illegal came along and was willing to work for 300 to 400 per month + casa and comida . I see young Mexican Americans (1st generation) saying thing like "who will do the work" . This is laughable . I have a lot of friends that are from mexico but also this has been festering a long time with many .

  25. You burn me, you step on me.
You kneel when I am waved.
But I’ve faced much worse than this,
The road to freedom I have paved.

    I’ve rode with George Washington,
And gone down with ships at sea.
I’ve flown in the wild blue yonder,
and been carried on the shores of Normandy.

With imprisoned soldiers I have been,
And raised on Iwo Jima by soldiers brave.
I’ve been with those who never returned home,
To widows I’ve been handed and laid on a soldier’s grave.

I’ve been to ground zero when all hope was gone,
And through tears, looked down at the candles all around.
I’ve flown half mass in times of darkness,
And yet still I stand and won’t stay on the ground.

And so you burn me, not knowing what I am.
You think you protest but I gave you that right.
So continue to kneel, yet as you do, know this…
That for YOU I will continue to FIGHT.

  26. Chivis . There has to be a wall built . His ego will not let him not do it . I'm betting the wall will go up unless there is some major incident . Congress cannot stop him . Besides they already approved it . The Jaguar ? Mexico can keep it! The people that live on the ranches and farms don't want the big cats . There were legitimate reasons the cougar and the jaguar were killed out in the southern U.S. . Its these bleeding heart urban dwellers that ....... Enough about that . The wall will go up . I'm not a Trump fan . I voted to keep a person like Hillary Clinton from being president . Hillary's long term history of being dishonest kept her from winning . It goes all the way back to the Nixon impeachment .
