Judge who handled El Chapo’s cartel case is assassinated

Anonymous Guest Reporter material from the Sun and aristegui news

A judge who has investigated some of Mexico’s biggest drug gangs — including El Chapo’s feared Sinaloa Cartel — was assassinated on Monday.

Shocking footage shows Vicente Antonio Bermudez Zacarias being shot in the head while he was out jogging in Metepec, 30 miles west of Mexico City.

The mystery gunman runs behind him before shooting him in the back of the head at point-blank range. Bermudez, 37, lies dying in the street as the gunman flees. According to local reports, he was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.

President Enrique Peña Nieto condemned the murder and ordered the attorney general’s office to take over the investigation.

Bermudez became a district judge in December 2013 and served in the Fifth Tribunal for appeals and civil judgments in the State of Mexico when he was killed.

His cases included one involving the Los Cuinis drug cartel and a tax fraud investigation against powerful businessman Naim Libien Kaui, whose family is accused of links to drug traffickers.

Most recently, he had suspended the extradition of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman to the US to face drug trafficking charges.

El Chapo’s Sinaloa Cartel is infamous for its willingness to execute or corrupt officials, and the notoriously brutal drug lord has twice escaped top-security prisons.

However, it is not yet known who was responsible for the killing and authorities say a motive has not been determined.

“I have given instruction to the attorney general to take up this case, undertake the corresponding investigations and find those responsible for this terrible event,” Peña Nieto said.

Supreme Court president Luis Maria Aguilar Morales also urged authorities to ensure the safety of judges.

“Federal judges are people who dedicate their lives, their personal, moral and physical integrity to serve federal justice in our country,” Aguilar said.

“They require security and peace conditions that guarantee their independence because in an atmosphere of peace and security, judges can reflect on their decisions.”

  2. No need to bribe the next guy taking up the position as judge in these cases: he knows what he gotta do and what not, or else!

By enjoying the benefits of corruption over the last 50 years, the mexican elite has really fucked up themselves and the future of their kids.

    1. Yup I agree, for some a long period of time the elite were untouchable. It was a matter of time before they would become part of the mix. Just look at the moreira that got killed in coahuila

    2. Raul Salinas de Gortari also got ministers of justice, senators, governors, congressmen, cardinals and presidential candidates murdered, but in mexico that does not matter none, what matters is saving Carlos Salinas de Gortari's ass, that matters to the US, and to UK where he lives in hiding.

  8. This was a high-profile judge that was handling more than just El Chapo's case. He could have been killed by any criminal group that was unhappy with their court case.

In fact El Chapo has no reason to hate this guy because this judge actually stopped the extradition process for El Chapo. It could very well have been a group that wants to see Chapo extradited and threatened to kill him unless he continued the extradition process.

There could be hundreds of reasons why many different groups wanted this guy dead. RIP

    1. Yes thank you. People ignorantly ignore the fact that the article says it suspended Chapos extradition so you see it was probably the government or another Cartel. Please try to read carefully as is very evident they are accusing Chapo and his family falsely

    1. Not it was chapo because most likely this judge was not gone be able to suspend the extradiction for a second time so they kill him so the cases can go to a judge who is in there pocket

  13. No federal judge is delivering to Mexicans. All law makers, judges and cops need to be shot on sight for not providing security to the citizens.

The constitution burnt and a new one created with real rights including the roght to bear arms at any time by law abiding citizens with no criminal record

Real charges for corruptos especially those holding office

It is a monument to stupidity as is, and must be preserved.
Work on a new one where things can be reversed and punishment is retroactive and includes the classless political class.

    2. I think it was somebody waiting to record the hit, from inside a building, you can see a window frame, and a hand and fingers and the narrow film of a cell phone in the middle.

  15. How would the camera be focused exactly on the judge and assassin? The first car to stop appears to drive away without helping the judge.

    2. I wonder if that 1st or 2nd car that paused was the sicario's car just to be sure the judge wasn't moving? He blended in looked like another jogger and was jogging away from the scene looking like normal jogging.

  16. By the time they enlarge and enhance that they should be able to know who the guy is. Especially if it was a traffic cam. If he is a member of a group, and is identified he they will probably kill the shooter too as it could draw attention to them. Or like many things here it may just be swept under the carpet.

  17. why the killer did it in front of a cam ita a message to someone??
