Mexico has impounded 40,000 weapons in the last four years

Translated by Otis B Fly-Wheel for Borderland Beat from a Milenio article

Subject Matter: Weapons smuggling from USA to Mexico
Recommendation: No prior subject matter knowledge required

Reporter: Rafael Montes
The Chancellor Claudia Ruiz Massieu alerted that in four States of the USA that make up the frontier with Mexico there exists no less than 9000 legal outlets that sell firearms and more than 23,000 licenses for selling arms over the Internet or in outlets like supermarkets, " that endow the transnational criminal organizations with enormous firepower."

In her participation in the second Conference of the States that are party to the Treaty on the arms trade of the United Nations, commented that this facility to purchase weapons at the border translates into the fact that 70% of the weapons seized by Mexican authorities are from buyers or distributors of the United States, and that 60 % of the confiscated weapons are manufactured in the USA.

She explained that between December of 2012 and July of 2016, Mexico has seized 40,000 weapons, 23,000 of those being large calibre high powered weapons, 4,000 grenades and 5.6 million rounds of ammunition.

For that reason, Ruiz Massieu made a call to the Treaty signatories to commit to its regulation and surveillance of the trade of weapons world wide.

She expounded that " actually, the value of commercial arms sales represent around 100,000 million dollars, that amounts to double the annual total of official aid to development provided by members of the OECD to the poorer countries of the world."

"In respect of the illegal trade, its constitutes one of the activities most lucrative to criminal organizations, comparable with the trafficking of drugs or people, so there is no room for euphemisms and excuses, because the reality is imposed with pain and rawness".

She added that every year, close to a million people worldwide are killed because of conventional arms, and that they are the principal cause of death on a global scale.

On average 1500 lives a day are lost, a large proportion of which are innocent civilians, women and children, including zones where there is no armed conflict, half a million people die each year because of this motive.

Before the gathering, she invited the member states to present  national report alerts on the sales of weapons, and to establish a trust fund for control of the transfer of weapons, so there Governments and not the companies involved, which control the exchanges, establish a group of independent experts who can evaluate the magnitude, and impact of transfers of small arms and light weapons.

As well as asking for a reinforcement of the dialogue and interchange of experiences with the civil societies.

She also expressed that in order for Mexico to eradicate the illegal commercial sale of arms is one of the more delicate demands, and that the international community discusses the irrational violence that these sales generate.

"We are witnesses  of the tragedies that happen because of the illegal trade in Siria, Iraq or Libya, with non State sponsored armed groups, In Mexico and Latin America, with the criminal organizations, in Germany, Belgium France or Turkey, with terrorist attacks, and in Norway or the United States, with mass assassinations," she lamented

She said that experts estimate that there are 875 million small and light arms, that every year they produce 8 million more, and 12 million rounds of ammunition, " it means that there are 2 rounds of ammunition in circulation for every person on the planet.

Free sales

* In the United States there are around 56,500 arms dealers. Since 2005 assault weapons have been free to buy in USA territory.

* California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, are that States that produce the major worry for the Mexican authorities.

* 30 % of the arms decommissioned in Mexico are of European fabrication and 10% are produced in the rest of the world.

* The trafficking of arms to Mexico has converted into the second most important crime committed by organized criminals.

YES, THERE MAY BE 9000 outlets that sell firearms in these border states. Obviously you people don't know how painstakingly difficult and expensive it is to buy a firearm online for the common man, like me.(Sure, if you're a drug trafficker with MILLIONS of dollars at your disposal and lots of CORRUPT people at your side, I guess it would be a piece of cake!) Ummm, ENORMOUS FIREPOWER??? A semi-automatic firearm is one bullet comes out per one trigger pull. That's not ENORMOUS FIREPOWER to me. Yes, it will fire as fast as you can PULL THE TRIGGER. Now, as far as I can tell and not to mention all the BS that has been spewed by the liberal DEMOCRATS, seeing photos and videos of the carnage,(you people even admit this was done with AUTOMATIC WEAPONS, which "spray" bullets according to a senator named Diane Feinstein), THOSE SAID AUTOMATIC WEAPONS WERE NOT BOUGHT HERE IN THE STATES AT THE INTERNET "SUPERMARKETS" YOU CLAIM THEY WERE BOUGHT AT. I, a common man, CAN own a FULLY AUTOMATIC AR 15 or AK47, IF I PURCHASE THE GUN FROM AN FFL,(price is around oh $23,000.00 - again, not a problem for a drug trafficker), pay a $200.00 tax on the gun, and register it with BATFE.(Somehow, I don't think a criminal is going to pay a tax and register the gun with BATFE.) Pretty simple, huh? My theory(which doesn't matter anyway), is that these AUTOMATIC WEAPONS(which would be far more desirable than SEMI-AUTOMATICS), DON'T EVEN EXIST, AND THIS IS A PLOY TO TAKE OUR 2A RIGHTS AWAY, USING THE U.N. ARMS TREATY. What do you think would happen to the US if they took our firearms away? Probably, cartels would confront our police with the same "plato o plomo" policies they did in Mexico and even before that, Colombia. Then there would be wide spread fear, "narco-retenes"; heads rolling into family restaurants, general LAWLESSNESS, I hope YOU GET THE PICTURE. Geez, I guess we should just get used to it, huh? And you wonder why people, like me - support Trump AND the conservative cause. WE DON'T WANT TO SEE OUR BELOVED COUNTRY TURNED INTO A 3RD WORLD CESSPOOL!!! As for immigrants coming here for a better life? We Americans welcome LEGAL, I said LEGAL immigrants. Why did you leave your country?? To get away from poverty and build a better life - something EVERYBODY wants. The DEMOCRATS opened the door by eliminating the border, letting ANYONE in. All the diseases that were eradicated decades ago are now coming back. Measles, scabies, polio, tuberculosis. We Americans ask ourselves, WHY DO YOU WANT TO TURN OUR COUNTRY INTO THE COUNTRY YOU JUST LEFT??? QUIT VOTING DEMOCRAT!!! I'm not saying vote REPUBLICAN, just vote ANYTHING BUT DEMOCRAT!!! OUR FREEDOM(what's left of it) and our way of life is at stake here, and when its gone, ITS GONE AND WE WON'T GET IT BACK!!! Damn lucky for us, 100 million gun owners still have our guns...

    1. Excuse me but you are being paranoid. There is plenty of countries in the world that the citizens aren't all armed and they are not a cesspool like Mexico.Remember you have law and order in US.Mexico doesn't.Even if the citizens are armed. That's the big difference and US would not turn into another Mexico having rule of law.The criminals wouldn't get away with it as a rule.

    2. @9:03, what the fuck are you talking about I don't see where this person even mentions the Second Amendment. Plus, fully automatic weapons are not easy to get in the US and I'm willing to bet they don't make their way down to Mexico because of their cost. I also think you need to go back and read the Second Amendment again, and this time read the whole thing and then go and read the other papers the framers wrote where they actually explain their reasoning for the wording in the Constitution I think you'll see your ...a well regulated militia argument will fall apart. Don't come back claiming you've already read the papers because you would never have written what you did if you had read them.

The ioo ooo million dollars worth of weapons means 100 billion dollars, paid for with cocaine profits, that get laundered that way, a lot of business, the victims of violence, about 350 000 deaths in the last 10 years in mexico are not all due to narcos, but due to army and police forced disappearances, kidnappings for ransom and plain old murders, in cahoots with their regional capo and drug lord, the right to posession weapons on the US does not include freedom to sell them like putas encueradas on the street to minors or to old hairy assed mexican drug trafficking criminals with good relations to border US states politicians that are too quick on blaming "the mexican cartels"
Please note that legal weapons kill millions of innocents all over the world every year, and bring the wars for profit of american private warlords to wherever they chose, paid for by the US government...

  14. Makes one wonder how many weapons they get from the Army and the Police? The crew served weapons found in stashes and after firefights are not exactly found for sale in shops.

  17. AK's have always been "throw-a-ways", but they are cheap and will do the job, it's a piece of hardware you can walk away from if you need to dump it. "Colt AR's" are of high quality very reliable and proven to last. But do you want to run with the wolves or sit on the porch with the rest of the pups? Wolf approved: SIG Sauer's, Steyr AUG's and of course H&K. ;)
