Oakland: 10 marijuana grow houses linked to Sinaloa cartel raided

The Alameda County Narcotics Task Force continued a second day of raids Wednesday on suspected illegal marijuana grow houses in East Oakland linked to a major Mexican drug cartel, authorities said.

Ten houses, including one across the street from an elementary school, were raided Tuesday and Wednesday.

At least 15 people were arrested, and authorities seized hundreds of pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of nearly $4 million. They also confiscated growing equipment and materials, along with two assault rifles and a revolver.

Task force members used flash-bang grenades before gaining entry at some sites, but no injuries were reported.

Sheriff's Lt. Derrick Hesselein, the task force commander, said the organized grow operation involves the Sinaloa cartel in Mexico.

He said the cartel would move Mexican nationals into the houses and pay them a small amount of money to grow and tend the marijuana and protect the crops. Some of the operations "were sophisticated, some were not," he said.

He said plants in various stages of growth were recovered as well as packaged product in different rooms at the houses. In one house, 55 gallon-size garbage bags full of 1-pound packages of finished product ready for sale were seized. The exact value of the marijuana seized has not been determined yet.

Authorities have not said how the marijuana was distributed.

Hesselein said the equipment used in the growing operations was powered by "thousands of dollars worth" of pirated electricity.

All of those arrested were adults, but some children were also living at some houses, and they were released to Alameda County Child Protective Services, he said.

Houses raided Wednesday were on 84th Avenue, D Street, Tevis Street and a home on Rudsdale Avenue across the street from Acorn Woodland Elementary School.

Hesselein said the investigation began a month ago based on tips and community involvement.

Based on what the investigation has found so far, Hesselein said it shows that "marijuana is not a victimless crime. It brings a lot of problems to our cities."

The task force, a multi agency law enforcement team headed by the sheriff's office, was helped in the raids by Hayward and Oakland Housing Authority Police, the sheriff's office Special Duty Unit and Transit Crimes Unit, and the county Office of Emergency Services.

Hesselein said a key part of the raids was the use of a sheriff's department drone, which provided "instant on-site surveillance and intelligence and also was able to follow suspects trying to flee."

He said the investigation is continuing.

I live in Chihuahua and I am a Caucasian American. when I go anywhere in the USA, whether I am talking to Mexican Americans or others, the first thing they say to me in conversion is I will not go back, or I will not go down there even to visit family. They ask about the violence, beheading's, crime, corruption, police thuggery, drugs and cartels. That is the first thing out of their mouths. All my Mexican friends say that when they go to the USA they feel safe. Sadly the first things that people think about now days is not the resorts. It is about the atrocities and more. When Mexican people go to the USA they think about opportunity, buying things a lower prices and safety. One of the guys I bought my properties from down here says that when he crosses into El Paso he feels calm and relaxed. With this in the backs of Americans minds, and just not White Americans, Trump has struck a nerve and people do not want Mexico's problems to come to the USA. Yes the USA has it's own set of problems, but why allow more to come in is what they are thinking. People there want to keep the criminals out is all. this article is just one small example of what is happening. It is OK to be a proud Mexican, but they are tired of the relentless crime, police and government here also.

But statistics and actuality really shed a light on what is happening without everyone guessing. Not anti Hispanic by any means as my wife and kids are Mexican, all my friends, and the Mexican people here except for the criminals are wonderful people. Just like wonderful people from anywhere. Where most of the big cities that are mainly Black in population, crime is the highest. It just so happens that in Oakland the Black crime is up there, but not as high as the Hispanic crime. The ten most dangerous cities in the USA have a very low percentage of Whites as shown by FBI statistics. Again you can go look this up yourselves. If you cannot talk about it you cannot resolve the problems. I worry about all my Mexican friends here in Mexico everyday. I have had some killed just because they were successful and targets, and one because he unknowingly danced with a girl that was a criminals girlfriend. It's horrible when you cannot even go to a bar and ask a girl to dance and get shot for it when you leave the bar. I am just as concerned here about the crimes as the Mexican people are. That just means I care.

    7. You are FOS. I don't believe you are married to a Mexican because you are offering a false narrative. Blacks comprise the overwhelming majority of crime in Oakland but only comprise 1/4 the population.. whites and Hispanics are the most likely victims of crime in Oakland

17 of 100k crime rate in Oakland national ave is 3.4
In a city where black citizens comprise 28 percent of the population, some say the data supports community concerns about racial profiling by police. But if you look at what crime victims and witnesses say about the race of the perpetrators in Oakland - a different picture emerges.
African Americans comprised 83 percent of the 12,161 suspects in last year's homicides, attempted homicides, robberies, assaults with firearms and assaults with weapons other than firearms, according to crime suspect data provided to me by the Oakland Police Department. This data is based on descriptions provided by crime victims and witnesses.
For the same period, African Americans made up 26 percent of the 9,175 victims of crimes in those same categories last year
If Oakland wants to have a serious discussion about crime, perhaps this is where it needs to start.
-- 8,228 of the 9,491 robbery suspects last year were described as African American.
-- 844 of the 1,091 firearms assault suspects were described as African American.
-- 1,034 of 1,439 people suspected in assaults with weapons other than firearms were said to be African American.
-- 27 of the 32 suspects arrested last year for homicides were African American.
-- 41 of 79 suspects in unsolved homicides last year were described as African American. Thirty were listed as "unknown" race or ethnicity.
African Americans also accounted for 67 of the city's 90 homicide victims last year and were most likely to be the victims in attempted homicide and assaults with firearms or other deadly weapons. Hispanics (9% of population)and whites (51% population)were the top two groups most likely to be victims of robberies.

    8. I was married to one Mexican women and divorced her. I have been with my new wife for 5 years in October and she is wonderful. Not trying to find a false narrative but the truth. Your information is helpful and I am glad someone looked up something without spouting off first. I commend you and that is great that you found this. In all honesty I probably misstated as I was looking at photos of the FBI most wanted list for Oakland. I was surprised that they were overwhelmingly Hispanic as you can see if you go to that page. I also thought it was because of the Black population, and your statistics bear it out. Kudo's to you. I was not trying to demean Mexicans or anyone, I was just trying to post what I saw and thought were the facts, and I guess I missed something. I did not find the research you found. Look at the FBI's most wanted for Oakland and hit the link were it has the photos. You will see where I became confused. I thought the majority would be Black but they are not. So you confirmed what I thought was the reality in the first place, that it is Black crime that is the highest. Not that anyone should be getting any awards over being first, second or third.

So you can see that I am not trying to put out a false narrative go to this link. I was on the FBI list for Oakland and when I hit a link it led me to this which is Actually Northern California's most wanted list. Complete with photos and names.

      https://northerncaliforniamostwanted.org/default.aspx?menuitemid=719&menugroup=NC+Most+Wanted+Public&category=LawEnforcementFugitives

      The breakdown is:

      32 Hispanic
      10 Black
8 White (Three of those are from 1962 for the men that
      escaped from Alcatraz).
      9 other s mixed

So there is where I came up with my previous comment. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words and in this case a name to go with it.

My wife and friends here say I am 50% Mexican. I have learned Spanish quite fast and fit in well. Everyone treats me well here. I have nothing to complain about. But like everyone else here you have to be a little more careful.

  31. Real Estate Gold Rush CA

    http://www.alternet.org/drugs/marijuana-land-rush-northern-california

Plus we have managed to push most of the cartel grows out of the National Forests due to the drought and pressure from the Feds, there are so many county programs to grow that it doesn't make sense for them to be out in the middle of nowhere.
This , of course , with all the new Ca state water use regs ( BMMR ) and a rainy winter will drive them back out into the forests along with most others who can't comply with the hefty licensing fees.
There were no shortage of Cartel grows where some poor bastards were just flown in on choppers and dropped off in the woods to tend the crops , often they didn't even know what state or what part of CA they were in. I have personally seen Lake County Sherriffs Dept on " shoot to kill " missions . Deputies on quads camo- ed out in full tacticle gear , armed to the teeth with NO chopper backup or dump trucks to haul out the chopped down plants . I pack in there all the time with my burros and I will take my chances with my espanol rather than fuck with those Lake County dudes. We also have " Lear Asset Management Team ", mostly Iraq vets turned mercenaries dropping outta the sky ( think Blackwater ) backing this kind of policing up in the name of managing the blackmail deer population . Does this sound like I am talking about Mexico ? Nooooo, the good ol' US of A , in my back yard.
I am sure we have all the cartels and don't forget La EME, run straight outta Pelican Bay.

    1. Well because the cartels are untrustworthy and they always steal the customers, the crops, and kill the US delegates in mexico, now it is only fair that blackwater and other mercenaries are protecting the shit on the US, but with CLASS, They get paid by the US government, and their employers make even more money per foot soldier than the foot soldier, but it still is plenty money for STEAKS, no maruchan or unlawlessness there, and most of all, the crops are in safe hands there...

  32. Really ? It is the Wild West out here in Nor Ca complete with military style roadblocks , unmarked convoys of Feds, warrentless searches and seizures, breaking down doors , stealing tools , trucks , quads to use in THEIR police raids taking legally safed guns ,cutting or torching thru all kinds of gates gun safes , holding neighboring residents hostages until they are done with their business.......driving quads over cliffs and these are NOT cartel grows , they are often Mom and Pop grows in compliance with local regs or greedy growers who deserve to be busted for draining our watersheds but do deserve to be treated legally.
