Mexico Sees Most Violent Month Since Calderon Era

The number of homicides in May reached levels unseen during the administration of Mexico President Enrique Peña Nieto, and the fact that they are more widespread makes the trend increasingly difficult for authorities to reverse.

Mexico's Executive Secretary of the National System of Public Security (Secretariado Ejecutivo del Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública - SNSP) announced there were 1,746 homicides nationwide during the month of May, reported Milenio. The previous high for murders under Peña Nieto was 1,726 in December 2012, the same month he was sworn in as president.  The last time homicides were this high was in September 2012, when former President Felipe Calderon was still in office, reported El País.

Mexico's homicide rate rose to 14 per 100,000 in 2015, reversing a downtrend trend in violence for the first time since 2011. And homicides are up 19 percent during the first five months of 2016 compared to the same time period last year.

Violence in Mexico is not only rising, it's spreading. Homicides have increased in 23 Mexican states during the first five months of 2016, according to Animal Político. The largest jump has come in Colima, where murders have risen by over 400 percent compared to the same time period in 2015. The Pacific state also owns the country's highest homicide rate, with 33 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.

Security analyst Alejandro Hope told InSight Crime that several factors are likely behind the rise in Mexico's homicide rate.  But ultimately, Hope notes, these are only hypotheses. It's still not clear what exactly is driving the surge in murders.  "We don't know for sure," he said.

But authorities no longer have the option of simply deploying federal troops to a few violent hotspots. The violence is too widespread. Authorities will have to come up with alternative means to stop the bleeding.

    1. What a great idea. Oh wait Mexico already did send the Mexican army and marines .or are you trying to let us know that the American marines and military are better in any way? Better training ? Better weapons? It's the same crap you idiot the cartels would kill them just how they kill the Mexican military and marines . They would never be able to stop drug trafficking and the violence that comes with it.

    6. Anyone who thinks the solution is to deploy us soldiers to Mexico is a fuckin moron.soldiers are tired of having to fix other countries fuck ups especially when the lives of soldiers are at risk. The ones who are to blame like always are the governments who don't care about civilians- soldier casualties.they have agendas that the public nore the media know about.the military should only DEFEND the us not other countries that's why we are always in a cluster fuck with the world. In this case peña neto is organized crime and thats why its difficult to out him,the corruption runs so deep that in order for the Mexican people to receive justice they have no other choice but to revolt against the government Like Che,Castro, Gen.Pancho Villa, and Zapata. That is the only way!

  7. @5:00pm

War is a good way to "spend" money with the premise it was used while at war against Narcos.

We the Mexican senate and justice system do not want justice for the Mexican people because it can be applied to us as well and we would lose.

    Are you nuts?

  11. The only real way to make peace is to destroy all your foes. They care not for life and spread fear where they go and it works. It has always worked and so if you can't control a thing you must destroy it. The cartels are sending "sicarios" into the USA and we are giving them food stamps and free housing to be are friend lets see how that works out.

    ReplyDelete

#1 we can't get imprisoned for taking food stamps, free housing and medicare...
#2 Running drugs for american drug trafficking warlords lands us in prison...
so #1 is the obvious choice.
--But on the bright side, I am genuisnously sorry for your feelings and wish you a prompt recovery...
