President Enrique Peña Nieto ordered the attorney general (Spanish: Procurador General de la República or PGR) to "accelerate" the extradition of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera, so he may be imprisoned and tried in the United States.
While still at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos Switzerland, the President stated that this case "obviously goes through a process involving the judiciary of our country." He spoke as he was being interviewed today about issues affecting Mexico, such as the political and economic priorities in the year ahead?
And of course “what about Chapo?”
Enrique Peña Nieto proffers his thoughts, which was captured by video.
EPN, smiled when the Moisés Naím, announces at the beginning of the discussion, that everyone wants to know, what will happen to Chapo, but that they will save that question for the end.
Some of the comments pulled from that end discussion:
He gives praise to Mexico public security institutions, through whose work they were able to re-capture Chapo.
Peña acknowledged that "it was for us, as a government, it was a difficult stressful time" when the criminal managed to escape in July last year.
But that the important thing was that the recapture was achieved.
He states, the Attorney General's Office is working and will accelerate its work to extradite, as soon as possible, “this highly dangerous criminal.”
The PGR, he said, "is the body that will be working to continue the process for the crimes alleged against him, but also it will work in favor of extradition."
Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, the capo, has so far, not revealed any links with politicians and police.
I was able to locate a video of the conversation. Although it is in Spanish it has an interpreter translating the narrative to English.
