Hollywood to produce a film of La Barbie's life

Lucio Borderland Beat- Republished from Deadline thank you Chivis and Pepe

Reporters note: August 2011, Rolling Stone magazine published a feature on Edgar
Valdez, aka ‘La Barbie’.  Chivis republished the article on Borderland Beat, you can read that article by following this hyperlink- Lucio

EXCLUSIVE: After completing a long run as the tragic motorcycle club leader on Sons Of Anarchy, Charlie Hunnam [below right] is going to play another character who gets lost in the drug trade. Legendary has acquired the 2011 Rolling Stone article American Drug Lord, and they have set American Sniper scribe Jason Hall to write the script as a potential star vehicle for Hunnam.
Legendary will produce with Plan B’s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner and Hunnam. It is based on the story of Edgar Valdez, a high school football player

from Texas who would become the only U.S. citizen to rise to the level of cartel leader in Mexico. From his base in Acapulco, Valdez, who brought the nickname La Barbie that was given him by his high school football coach, made $130 million in one year moving drugs from Colombia.

He became increasingly feared and allegedly ratcheted up the violence that involved filming the brutal executions of rivals and posting them on the Internet. As the drug riches escalated along with the violence, the rival cartels turned on one another, with the help of crooked cops. Valdez’s life became a struggle to stay alive.

Jillian Share and Sophie Sikora will supervise the project for Legendary and Sarah Esberg of Plan B will executive produce. The article was written by Vanessa Grigoriadis and Mary Cuddehe.

Legendary has bet big on Hunnam as a feature star. He starred in Legendary’s Guillermo del Toro-directed Pacific Rim and they were working on a sequel. Hunnam will next be seen starring in the del Toro-directed Crimson Peak, also for Legendary. Hunnam, who’s booked to play King Arthur for Warner Bros, is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment. Hall, nominated for a WGA Award and BAFTA for his American Sniper script, is repped by CAA and Management 360.

    6. Yo 7:33 we want to be entertained in the movies with some action, not put to see sleep by Dr. Mireles nobleness. This is the reason why u still have people talking about Goodfellas Casino Donnie Brasco etc.... And not about Noble Peace prize movies like Capote n so n In To The Woods etc.....

    7. @ 7:50 you need both movies to show the two sides of the problem. Making both movies will help make this history so we dont repeat it.

  3. Can't wait to see this. La barbie has such a crazy story it will be cool to see on the big screen. I wonder how much of the movie will be fabricated though... and I highly doubt he made 130 million in one year. Maybe he moved 130 million in total value, but total profit is hard to believe

    1. when they give these figures they always use retail prices...for instance if a guy moves a kilo which is worth, say 15 thousand wholesale, the govt will figure its worth if sold as nickels bags which might be 250,000 and say the guy was moving 250K worth of dope every week instead of the 15 k he was really moving

    2. We are talking about cocaine here... shipping from the source in colombia to US in multi-ton quantities is going to leave these kind of earnings...maybe even greater...he just said 130 to get the bloodsuckers off his back...

  9. Charlie Hunnam is a great actor and a good choice for any movie. With that said, I see lots of obstacles in the way of getting this movie done.

First, it's gonna be very hard to make this movie and not piss off anybody that is still on the outside. I'm don't think any of the BLO will be happy with this movie. If La Eme almost got Edward James Olmos for "American Me" then I don't know what the BLO or even stronger Narcos or politicos will do.

Second, what language will it be in? Hunnam is a great actor, but he's British and has a strong British accent. Will he speak good Spanish?

Third, where will it be filmed? Anywhere in Mexico will be dangerous.

Thanks for the info guys. What did you guys think of the movie "Frontera"?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1. No one in Mexico will do anything. Everyone who worked with La Barbie is either in jail or executed, or has no real power anyway. Hell, we made a movie about North Korea without anyone getting killed, and believe me Barbie is less powerful than Kim Jong.

      2. It will be in English, obviously. I cant believe this is even a question. The whole movie will be in English, and it will be made for Americans, like every great movie.

      3. Now this is actually a good question. They probably wont film it in mexico. But, its possible to film anything anywhere these days. Homeland is filmed in South Africa and it takes place in Pakistan.

      Delete
    2. Did you hear his British accent in S.O.A. genious..no,right?...that's why they are called actors.they can play different roles and talk different accents.

      Delete
    3. It will be in English for sure. I am just saying that because it is being made by people from Hollywood. I would assume it would be filmed mostly in texas for safety reasons. Im sure some will be filmed in mexico though

      Delete
    4. Have you watched Sons of Anarchy? Hunnam has no problems hiding his British accent. Most good Actors from the UK and Australia have no issues masking their accents. I didn't even know Hunnam was British when I first watched Sons of Anarchy. I think he'll do fine as far as that goes.

      Delete
    5. Thanks for the response Bones and the rest of you guys. We'll see what happens. Hunnam is a good choice though.

@ 3:32, calm down pendejo. I'm just curious how he'll sound when he has to say his Spanish lines. We'll see how it comes out. Not even you know how it will sound till we hear it genious.

      Delete
    6. @6:19 AGAIN, the movie will be made in English... No Spanish lines for him. Got it.

    1. You are correct 3:16p but the La Barbie story is more appealling to Americans because of his US upbringing. It will make more money in the box office just for that reason. Plus CDS and Zetaz would be more likely to resort to violence against producers and film makers since both still have a lot of power.

      Delete
    2. 4:54 P.M., you hit the nail on the head. It seems like more of an " It could happen to me" type of story. It is not likely to make him look 'bigtime'. It is more likely going to show a smalltown 'all american' boy who quickly got in over his head. The story would make a great after school special not a blockbuster.

      Delete
  14. Chivis do you know if there's any update on La Barbie? Do they have a plan for a trial? From what I've read on BB and elsewhere, they started his extradition process in 2012, but otherwise he's just sitting in Altiplano eating very well.

      Delete
    5. Beltrán Leyva? I admit that BLO has influence and power even more when Arturo was around but nothing compared to the empire los Aretes built from ground up in la Baja. From pushing tons on a weekly basis, political and international Mafia connection/influence, immense legitimate businesses to squads of elite trained hit men Beltran Leyva brothers were not even in the same weight scale as the Arellano Felix. CAF in their prime/golden years was the only cartel in the Americas pushing the most product over the border. Not only that, in Ensenada "El Mayel" was doing enormous lucrative automobile business deals with the Yakuza and Chinese Triads all under the approval of Benjamin. The US and Mx governments primarily the two big three agencies in the States knew that the Tijauana Cartel were the mega cartel of the millennium plus not to mention Chapo's singing and pointing out to the DEA the countless of pharmacies and money exchange houses in Tijuana as fronts for the Arellano family That is why that once all mighty cartel/company was sanctioned with top arrests with all the weight of the "American" law. But one thing is for sure Ramon Arellano and Arturo Beltran were real mafiosos with heart and balls of steel. El Comandante Mon going into infested enemy territory, rolling with just three unprepared hitmen to break of the head of a rival Mafia boss and Arturo returning shots to a whole Infantry of 200 Mexican marines with tanks and choppers.

      Delete
    6. Honestly no one fucken cares about CAF or Baja. That area is only good for spring break. Los Zetas & CDS are the cartel everyone like to read about all there crazy shit.

    1. Because La Barbie's story is the most interesting of all of them.

An American by birth, winds up in the center of the transformation of the few established Mexican cartels into the dozens of more deadly mini-cartels that now haunt Mexico.

Someone here or on Forum said the GU and Los Abarcas in GRO are his offspring. It's true.

      Delete
    2. ou are partly correct, but Barbie was leading the los rojos for arutro,. Nava was the most trusted person to Arturo and took care of special executions..such as the beheading of the marines. rojos were Barbie. bitter enemies of GU. GU also began with los pelones, who also worked for Arturo. they both came from Sinaloa/arturo

      Delete
    3. Nobody in Hollywood wants to make a movie about arturo. La barbie movie makes sense for Hollywood because he is a white American, just like the majority of the American people who will go see it

      Delete
    4. 7:23 of course they dont arturo was too ruthless ordering his men to decapited 12 military and video tape it. He killed Edgar Millan for ordering the arrest of his brother. In a convoy he intercepted Genaro Garcia Luna ,to assure him that if he didnt go along with the agreement he could easily be reached. He used a rocket launcher to blow up the plane where the secretaries of Felipe Calderon were traveling in.After the death of the" Boss of Bosses" the whole family of that marine that died was also massacred. A head of a rival was left as sacrifice on his tomb . La barbie fits in to the perception Hollywood wants to give off of drug traffickers. In reality the real bosses do some unimaginable stuff never done before thats why they stand as leaders /bosses.

  30. I think they are blowing his story out of proportion a lot. While this guy is a drug lord/boss he still has no where near the same power or influence as say the REAL drug lords like the infamous Pablo Escobar or El Chapo. Those guys are SERIOUS drug lords and La Barbi isn't even in their league in terms of power. I think the main reason he gets so much attention is because he's still done better than most in the business and is American but he's still no El Chapo or Escobar.

And to all those hoping Hollywood won't ruin the movie and exaggerate or just fabricate most of it?....of course they will! they'll more than likely kill it and make La Barbi (Hunnam) some dual gun toting Rambo or something stupid.

    1. If you are not in the drug game, you will never know how hard it is for an american to get to where he was, the guys in Mexico dont give the kind of power to Americans, they keep it in the family or with friends they grew up with, in Mexico. Dumbass

  31. He played in a league in Texas that yes he was all league but the tallest guy in that league was 5"10, mostly mexican Americans. So yes he was all league but the leauge was terrible. Still his upbringing was middle class and his parents won the Texas lottery. The fascinating with him is that he could have done a lot of things and he landed with the cartel.

    1. His parents never won the lottery and he only played football in high school.
After high school he started working with a local gang stealing pick up trucks at Mall Del Norte in Latedo, Tx and his life went to hell.

    2. They group the high schools in Texas into districts for athletic and academic reasons, just like they would anywhere in the U.S. La
Barbie's school was probably in a all
      Laredo district considering Laredo
      has about 9 h.s.'s. The school's are
      made-up of predominantly Mexican
American(Hispanic)students. The talent level of the football teams is not at the level of future N.F.L. and N.C.A.A. FBS( now playoffs). So it's safe to say that Barbie wasn't that good of a football player. However, La Barbie did become a heck of drug dealer.

  32. They already made Narco Telenovelas on Telemundo, like El Senor De Los Cielos, and in Colombia they made one about Pablo Escobar, and others. Kate Del Castillo made one too and is about to make another about the Miami Florida drug trade from the 80s or 90s when it was a war zone.

  33. I'm assuming they are going to show his rise in the cartel with all the money, power, and women but will have a serious tone to it ultimately showing him hiding in Acapulco paranoid as hell until he gets arrested. I like the idea of this movie, well be similar to Blow.

  36. Javier Bardem would make a great Arturo Beltran.
What would be great about this film is if it's accurate unlike most movies based on a "true story" I read it's loosely based on a rolling stone article which is skeptical. Barbie was moving weight for Arturo since the 90's

    6. oh wow, I haven't thought about the actors. In reality competent actors can become the character without having to have to close resemblance, also makeup artist are incredible now.

So it is my hope they will do justice to the story and not compromise the truth. With a project that includes the artists, writers and filmmaker mentioned I think it will be top notch.

BTW, amazingly, I can recommend the documentary "The Legend of shorty" chapo guzman

usually I find these projects boring, redundant or frustratingly out of bounds of truth. I can't watch a full film.

this one held my interest. it was mostly factual. and it had some new footage including that of inside the chapel of chapo's son. his son edgar is entombed inside. no press has every been allowed in, when edgars mother griselda heard of the press visit she sent people to get them out.

they also travel to chapos compound in the sierras. It was filmed a few months before his capture. ...nice timing and luck

all in all...except from a few unnecessary inclusions, I can recommend it.

And he also had American associates while living in mexico and people said he would sometimes have meetings with them and they would speak only english.

  43. i hope its not too americanized. la barbie despite being a blonde spoke fluent spanish. they better make jax teller speak spanish in that movie.

i also get the concerns of some people who said its glorifying cartel lifestyle. sure but if you do the film the right way, it can serve as warning and deterent that even though its nice to live the cartel life, it wont last and you either end up dead or in jail.

they should end the movie showing how la barbie lives his life in prison.

    tell the story.
show the flash, the money, the women, the violence...

but dont forget to tell the story. especially how it ends. with la barbie living a miserable life in a maximum security prison.

  46. "He is also fascinated by the world of show business, and often frequented the glitzy bars and discos of Mexico City, Acapulco, and Cuernavaca in the company of stars. His ego is so big that his lawyer— who later became a protected witness for the Mexican state under the codename Jennifer 26 —told how the hit man ordered a film to be made of his life with the actor Sergio Mayer, son-in-law of businessman Jaime Camil, who has also been linked to drug trafficking.

The alleged biopic was complacently titled Brazo Armado (Armed Wing). In spite of this information, the PGR never issued an arrest warrant for the powerful businessman’s son-in-law—even though much lesser allegations by Jennifer have put several public officials behind bars."

  50. Do not ask why we are so fucked up with drug cartels violence...Hollywood and all the idiots (like the ones giving kudos to these criminals in this page) are responsible for the culture of violence that we are having in Mexico.
Go to any small town in Mexico and you can see youngsters imitating the buchones who control vasts parts of Mexico...corridos songs, books, myths, and all that BS makes them think that that is the right path.
We deserved it, we really deserve to live in this misery until somebody wakes up and takes over the country.
