Frenchwoman freed from Mexico jail sues former president calderon and others for 36M

Florence Cassez, a Frenchwoman who became a cause celebre in her country, after she was jailed for kidnapping in Mexico, is suing a former Mexican president among other former officials and a major TV network, her lawyer said Monday.

Jose Patino Hurtado, Cassez's attorney in Mexico, told Noticias MVS radio that the civil suit filed on Friday seeks $36 million for suffering and "moral damage."

The lawsuit seeks "above all to vindicate Florence Cassez, which is the most important thing," Patino said in an interview with Noticias MVS host Carmen Aristegui.

It names ex-President Felipe Calderon, former Public Safety Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna and other officials, as well as the Televisa TV network and journalists including the prominent anchor Carlos Loret de Mola.

A Televisa spokesman said the company had no immediate comment. Calderon called the lawsuit "absurd" in an interview with journalist Joaquin Lopez Doriga on Radio Formula.

Cassez was arrested in 2005 and sentenced to 60 years on charges of aiding a kidnapping ring allegedly led by her Mexican boyfriend, in a case that soured relations between Paris and Mexico City.

She acknowledged living with the boyfriend at a ranch where kidnap victims were being held, but professed her innocence, saying she was unaware of their presence. One victim identified her as a kidnapper, but by voice only rather than by sight.

In January 2013 the Supreme Court overturned Cassez's conviction due to procedural and rights violations. A day after Cassez was arrested, police had forced her to take part in a staged raid on the ranch purportedly to rescue hostages and arrest suspects. It was covered by the media and broadcast on television.

"They knew the damage they would cause, and they prefabricated everything," Patino Hurtado said Monday.

After Cassez's release, the Interior Department said it would instruct Federal Police to read suspects their rights when they are detained.
She returned to a hero's welcome in France, but many in Mexico were indignant that a woman they believed to be a kidnapper had gone free.

    2. She was the bait, her boyfriend was the trap. She is an "accomplice" to crime, not a poor innocent white girl who happens to find herself unknowingly sleeping with a hardened criminal. She enjoyed life on the wild side, but is unwilling to accept the consequences when the party is over. She deserves to rot in a filthy prison cell!

    3. Exactly. I don't understand how people always get mad at mexico for being corrupt but then once they do their job and arrest someone who was an obivous accomplice everyone looses their mind and begins to say mexico did wrong. Why because she's french? Does that give her immunity? Everyone will always try to justify their actions with words, but none the less their actions caused them to break the law, so they must pay the consequence.

  5. There was so much bungling and ineptitude from both the police & the substandard judicial system that Mexico was forced to let her go...

  7. She needs to just be happy a rival gang didn't decapitate her and her criminal boyfriend. "Hey you have your head, now use it. Stay the hell out of Mexico!" Down there playing with fire and still playing with fire. Get a job move on. She expects Mexico to ccomply. Good luck! They will simply read the law that was written after this lawsuit, statint they are immune from civil suits. Some corrupt official is putting it on the books dated the year of 2000.

  15. Angel aguirre rivero, studied in the colegio frances, and maybe in france, no remember clearly, but the mexican gendarmeria that graduated, went to france for their training, so mexico and france are not in bad terms, amd mexico will pay the 36 million dollars to pena nieto, pena nieto will give florence 36 pesos and her boyfriend, and maybe a plane ticket to france, she is pretty, unlike the russian unclean unshaved...ooops!!! french women are famous because they don't shave either... french men never bathe and they eat frogs, fabricate communist leaders like ho-chi-minh and adore el che guevara, their only saving grace besides their pretty women, vive la france!!!
