Awaiting DNA Result to Confirm ‘El Azul’ Is Dead?

Borderland Beat; .DNA on what? Below from Bloomberg

Mexico’s government is waiting for results of DNA tests that would confirm the death of Juan Jose Esparragoza, known as “El Azul,” the second most-wanted leader of the Sinaloa cartel at large, according to a Mexican official.

The death was reported June 8 by RioDoce, a Sinaloa state-based news weekly. The Mexican official, who asked not to be named because the government has yet to confirm the death, said the authorities suspect Esparragoza died of a heart attack. The Interior Ministry’s press office said it had no additional comment after Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said June 9 that the government couldn’t confirm the death of Esparragoza at that time.

Mike Vigil, a retired former head of international operations for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, said Mexican federal security sources told him they contacted family members who confirmed Esparragoza’s death.

Esparragoza was the most-wanted Sinaloa cartel member at large after Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, according to a 2009 list distributed by the government of then-President Felipe Calderon. His death, if confirmed, comes three months after the capture of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who gained fame after escaping from a high-security prison and building up the Sinaloa cartel, named after his home state and known for beheading enemies or hanging their bodies in public places. ‘Solid Organization’ Esparragoza “has been a leader of the Sinaloa cartel for many years,” Alejandro Schtulmann, president and head of research at Mexico City-based political risk consulting firm EMPRA, said in a phone interview.

“The Sinaloa cartel is a very solid organization, and these three guys are the tip of the iceberg. There are many more people behind it.” The heart attack occurred following a car accident, Vigil said in a phone interview from Washington, citing the Mexican sources.

    1. Why do people glorify these dope pushers? These animals have done nothing but get rich offf the misery of others. Its nothing to be proud of if your products destroy society as a whole. I hope this man realuzed how worthless his empire of death was before he died. I've heard these fools say they'd rather be a lion for a day than a lamb that lives forever. I'll pass. May God bring peace to Mexico and all those effected by drugs everywhere.

  11. I hope he's not dead or retired. I'm not a CDS nut hugger or a fan boy of any cartel. I'm just worried about the bloodshed of innocents that will happen if he really is gone. Un brindis para un México unido -El Nemesis

  12. The Mexican Official who said they are awaiting DNA tests must be on crack himself. What would they test? His ashes? What an obvious scam! Azul's alive and has disappeared into retirement.

  13. but why do you report the cds is this and that,at the peak of thier so called power ,even with government help, the cds never took over one single plaza in all mexico,as a matter of fact, the rivals like zetas and beltran would actually go into the heart of culiacan and kill top leaders fron the antrax all the time, check the reports, and remember tubutamba and nayarit where almost 50 cds members were slaughter all at once...the ones beheading and hanging people from bridges here in mexico were mainly the zetas, and even look now, la linea continues to eliminate the remants of cds in chihuahua....you people from the states have it all wrong, listened to too many corridos...sad...so sad...

    1. Dude, CDS is an international drug holding company. They don't give a shit about retail and other crimes. Plazas don't really mean much to them.

    2. This is actually true.. my wife's two cuzins n whole family got killed.. thay were killed by zetas. Right in culiacan. I member her family talking bout that city like if it was untouchable.. I guess not.. I've noticed people from there r to Danm flashy.. my family dislikes there family for that same reason

    3. @10:51- control of the plaza and routes is all that matters and the CDS is comprised of many Chapos,Azuls and Mayos. These 3 have just been on the DEA radar the longest but don't kid yourself thinking these 3 are the head of the organization. The money is counted in Culiacan, laundered in Mazatlan and Guadalajara, and pisos paid in DF. Very structured an stable.

  18. What if Azul was ready to retire and decided to make an agreement with the Mexican government? He has enough money to pull this stunt. Give Chapó and in return and "die". I mean Amado died during plastic surgery and no one could recognize him, what a coincidence right? Or maybe he didn't even turn Chapó in, just felt this is the perfect opportunity to exit. CDS has seen too many hits lately, more than the necessary for an internal cleansing. People will blame it on restricting but if you want to retire a narco, there's no better way than dying. Can you argue that?

damn straight we care...or at least many of us..

Mexico opened its 2014 World Cup campaign with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Cameroon in Natal, Friday. Striker Oribe Peralta swept home the winner in the 61st minute, after Giovanni Dos Santos’s shot bounced off the midriff of Cameroon goalkeeper Charles Itandje.

    4. Good start for el tri in their World Cup championship aspirations. It's going to be hard for any team other than the penta campeones Brazil to win the World Cup since their playing at home. Argentina would be the next possible potential world champion since their used to playing in the archrival nation. The U.S. team will have a difficult task to come out of their group since they have the always strong German team and Ghana isn't a walk in the park either.

I bet it was but he paid his way off.. then with all that's going on I bet he felt he couldnt keep going much longer so he left.. or for all I know he might be really dead.. just food for thought member he was supposedly captured

  27. people say cds is falling apart but every cartel is cds except cdg even juarez the jefes are from sinaloa im from chihuahua and here in chihuahua everyone worked independent until all this cartel vs cartel started everyone just paid cdj to pass loads through juarez or bought the loads in juarez and moved them north thats the deal between sinaloa and chihuahua in sinaloa everyone works together in chihuahua everyone works on their own at least they used to but in chihuahua theirs heavy people they just dont bring attention to themselves like the sinaloas but either way my respects to both... thats why in chihuahua many went to la linea and many went to cds they had to pick sides.. which is bs if you ask me...

  33. natural selection will take care of selecting the next best if needed, without el azul's say so, the greatest leaders have a lot of work to do in choosing wisely their heirs or their helpers, so we will have to wait and see, i only hope no politician from any party in mexico gets to be the boss of bosses until he dies, no police or military either...
