Border Patrol Interview: how a logical question can stump BP spokesman

Chivis Martínez for Borderland Beat

On BB forum, I posted a number of clips from the just released movie "Narco Cultura",   Buggs also posted about the movie and a couple of trailers.

Photojournalist Shaul Schwarz documents Mexico’s drug war culture, through the music scene and the narcocorrido.  These narcocorridos, are gaining huge popularity with the under 30 generation, as they embrace the scene even faster than the “war” is spreading.
This clip takes place at the border fence that separates El Paso Texas from Ciudad Juárez, it begins with a self assured Border Patrol spokesman,  explaining how well the fence and technology is working in the fight against trafficking and unlawful migrant crossings, and the numbers being down considerably.   Schwarz is heard off camera asking a question…see what happens next.

  7. Chivis - slow down and take the day off. it's Thanksgiving. eat some food and stop driving yourself. I know, you are probably in Tamaulipas - but so what?? Learn to enjoy life. you know if you read your emails and answered them once and a while, you'd find some wisdom. BUT don't do that today either, OK?!! Hahahaha! P, CA

  9. I guess he has no good communication skills. He should've just gave a BS answer. BP needs to get a different spokesman.

  12. Hola...
Hope you all had a wonderful day and were surrounded by those you most love. (1:18PM I have an amazing day with my family)

About the video. the large majority of BP are dedicated, hardworking agents that conduct an important duty for all of us. I know more than a few along the Texas Border, from Del Rio to Laredo, and they have my upmost respect.

I did not want this to make the agent look badly, it was to spotlight how stats, and analysis in the drug war are often are so objective, influenced by opinions in that represent facts to attain a specific goal. In this case "the fence", in rendering a conclusion that it is largely affective and worth the tax dollars because it has lowered migrant travel into the US and drug trafficking.

But, how are the numbers calculated? undocumented migrant entries have been declining for years, and have been at zero net for a few years.

The spokesman in the clip was so ill prepared and appears not to have been briefed for the interview. I blame the boss. Perhaps his boss thought this was just another little documentary that few would see, so it was of no great consequence.

    Boy was he wrong.

  14. Less arrests doesn't equate to less effectiveness. On the contrary, it means greater effectiveness - to the point normal criminal activity has ceased or significantly reduced. Criminals, however, never cease to try new ways of doing business. What used to walk across the border is now crossing via tunnels, UFOs, submarines, catapults, etc, etc. This agent should've been better prepared and I bet he's been reassigned to changing tires in a garage!

  16. Border patrol agents are stupid like that. These guys get $68,000 a year to gaurd a fence and drive up and down. That's it!!! But our soldiers fighting real war overseas only get $30,000 a year. In el paso border patrol agenys are hated even by the police because of there arrogance. They brag so much of the money they make. But thats the business of killing peoples hopes and dreams.

    1. I bet your another border patrol hater that probably took the test to become one and didn't pass. there is a reason border patrol agents make 100k dollars a year NOT 68k its because of the dangerous environment they work in on a daily basis. You have no IDEA of the conditions these guys work in. they don't sit on the side of the road to hand out traffic tickets for a paycheck either.

    2. Nonsense. Many BP/ICE agents are veterans. $68k is nothing to brag about anyway. Agents work harder and risk their lives, what do you do? The consumers of drugs are the ones responsible for the behavior of the cartels, coyotes and gangbangers in the U.S.

    3. I agree most bp are arrogant, narcisistic assholes. I live in Laredo and most policemen can't stand them either!! They think they are above the law, they think they can harass Mexicans, their own people, for no reason and NOT get their asses whooped because they are Border Patrol! Dumb fucks can go to hell for all i care!

  17. SOMEONE FORGOT TO TELL YOU THAT THE BORDER PATROL ACADEMY IS THE HARDEST ACADEMY OF LAW ENFORCEMENT IN THE NATION!! THERE IS A REASON WHY THEY GET PAID MORE THAN COPS! DON'T COMPARE SOLDIERS TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS IT'S A DISRESPECT TO OUR SOLDIERS!

    1. I guess you guys are bp agents.. For you guys to brag about bootcamp, please that bootcamp is not all that. And no i never ever tried out for the bp. I dont believe in killing nopeoples hopes and dreams.

    2. Who said anything about a cops pay idiot. I said its stupid that the us govt pays these people, bp, more than our soldiers who areoverseas . Bp sit in there trucks and chill and play with there phones and drive up and down. Dont get offended mr. Bp agent

    3. What do you do for a living? just judging by your comments, I can tell you still live at mom and dads house you are receiving unemployment benefits and you listen to way to many narcocorridos!

    4. Hey, for the young buck that says bp agents just drive up and down and play with there cell phones all day. our first line of defense aka the border patrol seizes more narcotics than the DEA,FBI,and then all the cops in the country combined! the truth hurts son, I suggest you research info before you start offending people that are dangerously working at night when you are home sleeping with your ass in the air.

  18. Why not ask a question with a real answer? The question is not "logical" but rhetorical. There is no way to give an accurate answer. Why not ask a question with a real answer like "what is the estimated number of illegals living in sanctuary cities like Austin?" And "Why haven't the idle vehicles been allocated to the sanctuary cities to round up the illegals?"

    ReplyDelete
  19. hey grammar police, how have you been?

I don't think it was rhetorical, the director wanted to know if the stats could mean something differently, it was a commonsense, reasonable, logical question.

that stumped the bp, most likely because people accept and typically do not ask if there could be another meaning to the stats. that's my perception.

  21. stuff like that is why police and security personnel hate cameras and reporters :-) it's too easy to come off looking stupid on video. think about the last time you took 20 pix of your family ... how many were great photo's? maybe 2 or 3. How many did you scrap - maybe 10 because they were junk. this video should have been scrapped too. journalists scrap their own bad out-takes and re-record, but show recordings of others verbatim.

And what they're doing there overseas? Look at your country, maybe they could do something good there? It's fucked up what you think.

  24. El Paso Border Patrol agents are the laziest an overpaid agents in the Border Patrol. Why? there is a fence between the city of El Paso and cd juarez that separates both cities, therefore the agents dont have much to do but play with there cell phones and look at the fence.

  25. I would say Well since there is less people crossing due to the wall, there are less drug mules coming through

  27. Good job BB! Making border patrol agents look stupid, one little video at a time... Cuz 90% of the people here love law enforcement as it is anyways right?

    ReplyDelete
  28. "STUPID ASS DIDNT KNOW WHT TO SAY... BEEN THERE . BEEN PULLED OVER N THE COP HAS TO LITERALLY CALL HIS SARGEANT JUST TO B TOLD TO CUT ME LOOSE... LMAO"

"SARGEANT" ? And you are calling the agent a stupid ass? Try spell check next time.

I work in public affairs and what this filmmaker did was record in between shoots. Professional reporters and filmmakers understand that the person being interviewed may stumble, suddenly get nervous, or need to recheck his facts. Although the agent stumbled and did not answer the question this happens all of the time. It's just not broadcast under the guise of professional filmmaking.

It's interesting to see how many people are ready to condemn this agent or the agency. Although there are bad law enforcement people everywhere, the percentage of good, law abiding professionals outweigh the few. Try and show them some support.

Remember, more than 60 percent of law enforcement are prior military who have been blessed to make better pay than what they did while serving active duty. I was active duty and I was pleased to get a good job after I separated. Let's try not to spit in their face because they are making a better paycheck.

Try to remember that if the shit ever hits the fan in this country we will need to rely on each other.

  29. look all numbers put out to the public are not what they should really be.... if you want infrastracture to include fences your show more aprehhensions... and when the fences and infrastructure are in place you better show your numbers going down....... the PROBLEM IS THAT INFRASTRUCTURE AND FENCES DRONES HELOS,... DONT CATCHE PEOPLE THEY JUST HELP SLOW THEM DOWN..... WE NEED AGENTS ON THE GROUND PATROLING AND LESS AGENTS FIXING TIRES, PLAYING REPORTER, ON SPECIAL TASK FORCES...... WE NEED YOU ON THE BORDER WHERE YOU SHOULD BE...... OUR BIGGEST THREAT IS THE BORDER NOT AUSTIN OR NATIONAL CITY CALIFORNIA.... THESE ARE SAFE HAVENS.... BUT WHO CARES ......... GET THE AGENTS BACK ON THE BORDER PATROLING NOT DOING STUPID THINGS AND IDEAS GENERATED BY MANAGEMENT..... WHY HAVE AGENTS AT A WHAREHOUSE ISSUING OUT EQUIPMENT HIRE A GS 4 LEVEL PERSONELA AND DO THAT JOB AT A CHEAPER PRICE.... AND KEEP THAT AGENT ON THE LINE........ I THINK I BEAT THE DEAD HORSE TO LONG......... I HOPE YOU GUYS GET THE PICTURE......

  30. That's because he is not a real border patrol agent. So many things in that movie to include one of the character of the crime scene investigator is fake!
