Tamaulipas: Mexico's Most Censored State: Tweeting the Drug War

Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat
To a casual observer relying on mainstream media the Mexican state of Tamaulipas would appear very safe, because according to the media, no violence occurs in "Tamps".

This is a video of  interactive discussion at the Austin Texas Film and Music Festival.  The discussion is headed by a panel of three.  This event was sponsored by The Texas Observer who brought  the issue to an international audience in Austin and titled the event

Life on the Line: Tweeting the Drug War highlighted the bravery of citizen reporters living in Tamaulipas, the most censored state in Mexico.

Discussed is the media blackout in the state of Tamaulipas on the Texas-Mexico border where reporters have been killed, kidnapped,  threatened and the offices of the Mexican news outlets bombed.
Tamaulipas is the most censored but also the birthplace of citizen reporting which since 2010 has become a phenomenon and the trail blazer for other "hot" regions in Mexico, made so because of organized crime activity and turf wars. Initially beginning on Twitter as #ReynosaFollow and remains the place to access to access real time news.
The panel speaks of Tamaulipas being the country's most innovative when circumventing the media blackout as citizen reporters in Reynosa became anonymous pioneers in creating systems using social networks to collect and share information of shootouts, blockades, and conflicts that would be unknown otherwise.
The day following this conference all hell broke loose in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, and almost like proving a point the Mexican media did not report on the clash that killed up to 50 people, reported by citizens, and journalists off record.
The following day the Tamaulipas Attorney General announced through a statement that a conflict had occurred that took 2 lives and injured 1.
Below is a video of the Austin conference, it runs a little slow at first but becomes very interesting and informative especially for those readers that can't understand the reality of a black out media state, which Tamaulipas is.

This headline is a rarity

  2. Have you been to every single one of México states Chivis?

Because one could easily say that the most censored state is Sonora or better yet Durango. you see my point?

  3. And why is it so controlled? Because the cartel is weak their? Because the government is so strong? No because cdg is very powerful and controls shit. They put chapo on this mythical pedestal like he's #1 when your #1 in a game this huge you have no competition this isn't the case with any cartel. I've been telling you all how strong cdg is and has only gotten stronger. Off topic but ct is running things in so cal, I live in the Inland empire and you can't buy goo size weight out here anymore without the Templars. The man I met is monikered Soldado or soldier. They are here in Cali and not hiding. I mean I'm not scared as I'm in the mix at a small level but still in none the less but all you people condemning Mexico need to lock your doors and get some weapons in preparation

    2. They ain't running so call..... they have a presence .... specially in them ie...... the most I've heard of them is out in Mira loma where they hooked up with some fools from white fence and tried to collect rent but they got smashed and wf might be going in the hat for hooking up with them..... the homies run so cal paisas every where just get taken advantage off specially if they claim to be from a cartel. This isn't Mexico this California. We all know who runs California.

    3. "This isnt Mexico this is California" no seas mamon guey haha. Everyone knows that any mexican cartel has more power and money than la eme, mexican mafia or any other STREET gang. Los "paisas" son de mas guevos y son internacionales,y los homies haha are more street level.

.Cartels are international and La Eme or Mexican mafia are more local, street level. You never hear about sureños or mexican mafia members challenging the State or the goverment,or surenos decapitating 7 military officers like what happened in Chilpancingo Guerrero mx by the BLO,or when CT threw grenades during that one public celebration. maybe im wrong?

  5. @9:53PM
I just counted 18 of the states that I have spent time in. Sonora is where my father side of the family is and was. San Luis, Hermosillo, and Guaymas. Dgo I have spoken about countless times that they are hugely ignored by the media.

That said, Tamps is recognized everywhere as a media blackout state my headline came from the conference of journalists. Other states like Coahuila are almost as bad, but are not. Tamps is different, and unlike anything I have seen.

That prompted the creation of the social network use, I know one of the women that began at the onset, very well in fact and she was one of those that wrote the manifest.

This is not a competition, and many states have the media issue, but those states still have coverage. and no I don't see your point, one does not preclude other states. For example I am at a high level of frustration because of the lack of reporting in Coahuila. In cities such as Acuña there are daily shootouts and killings and no one is reporting a damn thing.

For the other reader, it is very difficult to explain. The blackout of Tamps began long ago. They do not have official narco death tallies, or kidnap tallies etc. there was a NGO conducting the counts and they left Tamps and never came back, that was I think in 2008 or 09. They have a very high incident of reporter kidnappings and killings. I will be posting additional information about the issue in the next few weeks. ....paz, chivis

    1. Chivis,im not doubting what your saying after all your the one with more experience,i just wanted to know how you came up with that conclusion, and you already explained that.I was curious thats all.

Since your dad is from Sonora, you know well that not much comes out that state as well, information on current situations.

Also i started reading your site since it started, all the reporters have always been on top of the situation,as best as they could, and i admire you too for that.

  6. People that are in the NE and journalists know all about the lack of narco reporting in Tamaulipas. I remember when I came to live here I would see balaceras or violence and run to see reports and there was nothing. People have to rely on themselves. and some times ignorant people who don't know how it is ask well where is the photographs and I am like it is not worth the risk it is better to drive by like you see nothing narcos may still be there and will kill you if you try. they kill anyone they determine is getting things they don't want known about out. that is why you see photos of many car afterwards, that is taken when narcos moved on, or buildings. on reynosafollow and valor there are now many photos that have been coming in but not of the trucks with bodies. who would be so stupid enough to stop and take those photos with narcos guarding the trucks?

just like when Tony Tormenta went down. all that destruction for days people killed just like this time and they never even confirm anything happened except him being killed. yet the city was a war zone. and that is how it is.

  10. the mexican government are obviously pandering to the cartels, i ask CNN why they did not report this murderous event in Reynosa on sunday, and the reply was it wasnt a story, well if thats not a story then i dont know what is, P.R.I are going to make things worse by censorship. All mexicanos should sue the pri for making them unsafe

  11. These videos have life. It's one thing to read reports and quite another to be in the audience listening and watching, you become part of an event and is a great way to draw the observer into Mexico's reality.

Secondly, is there a hidden plan on the way to eradicate the culture of violence that increases daily happening in Mexico?

  12. I doubt that Tamaulipas is that bad.. People often make up alot of the stories that are told.. and for the idiot above who claims that cdg is a strong cartel.. please cdg is on the decline to being nothing more than street hoodlums kidnapping, extorting, and stealing from the ppl.. cdg not even in its hey-day has pushed the amount of dope that other cartels like tijuana, sinaloa and Juarez have pushed into the U.S. cdg is a joke ... has always been the lesser cartel.

  13. As a tall white bald guy i obviously was a rare sight to ppl, friends, and strangers in mexico. But during the yrs of my mexico experience,06-08, i used to make the drive from nuevo laredo to mty alone, quota most of the time. Drove from mty to reynosa stopping through small towns along the way jus becuz. In a badass cadillac deville 92 with iowa plates. Its crazy to think how much has changed and nowadays i wouldnt make it back with my car let alone my life. I joined the us air force and 97% of mex is offlimits to travel to which is sad bc half of my "family" live in mty and juarez. I deployed to afghanistan but was more concerened about my fam n friends in mty during 2011.

  14. Even on Facebook people were warning others of atleast 50 dead in Reynosa. I no, I got 4 post about it from different people who live there. And Texas has issued travel warnings for the Tamps state. Thanks Chivis!

  25. Things are worse than what is published. My uncle was taken by the cartel on monday march 11th, since then we have not heard from him. We are in the states and there is no one we can call for help because the cartels call the shots in Reynosa. There is a page on facebook called "Valor por tamaulipas" and they update pepole min to min on the things taking place in different parts of the city.
