Wave of Violence Leaves Another 23 Dead in Zacatecas

Fifteen suspected cartel gunmen were killed and 14 others were arrested in different operations by federal security forces and state police in the north-central Mexican state of Zacatecas, where another eight badly decomposed bodies were found in a van, officials said.

In one of the operations, six reputed organized criminals, including a most-wanted suspect known as “Comandante Mara,” were killed in clashes with marines in the town of Sain Alto, Zacatecas’ government secretary told the media Friday.

Esau Hernandez said in a television interview that 14 other suspected criminals were arrested in another operation led by the federal police in the municipality of Rio Grande, where officers also seized communications gear, assault rifles, ammunition and some vehicles.

Another nine alleged organized criminals were killed in other operations involving federal forces and state police in that state, according to official reports.

Separately, spokespersons with the state’s Attorney General’s Office and Public Safety Secretariat said that eight bodies were found inside a van in the town of Fresnillo, a few kilometers from an army checkpoint.

They said the bodies were badly decomposed and that preliminary reports indicated the victims bore signs of torture.

Earlier this week in north-central Mexico, a van containing 14 bodies was found on the outskirts of the city of San Luis Potosi, capital of the like-named state.

Investigators gathered information indicating that the killers made a stop in the state of Zacatecas and the victims – discovered Thursday – were executed on the drive to San Luis Potosi.

The deaths come amid a turf war in that region pitting different organized crime gangs.

More than 50,000 people, according to official figures, have died in drug-related violence since late 2006, when newly inaugurated President Felipe Calderon militarized the struggle against the nation’s heavily armed, well-funded cartels.

The Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity, which was founded by human rights activist and poet Javier Sicilia, puts the death toll at 70,000.

  8. for the people stating Z50 and Z52 joined the gulf cartel when did this happen? It has always been my understanding that el Lazca and Z50 were blood brother meaning they had have each others back until death. hard to believe this actually happened because el z50 lost alot of his men in this war i dont think that its like whatever we can go from enemies to buddies. Theres been alot of killings in zac but honestly how can we be certain their all zetas their dead they cant speak. what if the zetas killed those people and they might of been gulf or chapos???

  19. Mexico Security Memo: Rumors of a Split Within Los Zetas

    Stratfor

Several media outlets recently have reported an organizational split between Los Zetas' two top leaders, Heriberto "El Lazca" Lazcano Lazcano and Miguel "Z-40" Trevino Morales. These reports cite a series of narcomantas posted June 1 in several states in Mexico alleging that Lazcano and Trevino betrayed several Zetas leaders close to them. Reports also cite social media messages that portrayed the two leaders as traitors.

Given the frequent fracturing of Mexico's organized criminal groups since the breakup of Miguel Angel "El Padrino" Felix Gallardo's Guadalajara cartel in the 1980s, a rift within Los Zetas would not come as a surprise and likely would lead to increased violence while factions fight for territorial control. However, currently there are no explicit indications of fracturing within Los Zetas. The group continues to defend its areas of operations from the Sinaloa Federation and its allies and to make incursions into rivals' strongholds.
A Closer Look At Los Zetas Split Rumors

    ReplyDelete

  20. Organizational splits within major criminal groups in Mexico typically have led to increased violence in regions where the criminal group operated. Felix Gallardo's decision to split the Guadalajara cartel into regional plazas eventually led to violent inter-cartel rivalries, such as the Sinaloa Federation's conflict with the Tijuana, Juarez and Gulf cartels. In northeastern Mexico, primarily in Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon states, Los Zetas continue to engage in turf wars with the Gulf cartel, their former parent organization.

Los Zetas have also received the most attention from government counternarcotics operations targeting the organization's high-ranking criminal leaders. In 2011, Los Zetas lost more cell leaders and plaza bosses than any other Mexican organized crime group as a result of the operations, and the group continues to suffer losses in local and regional leadership -- most recently on July 27, when soldiers in Huejotzingo, Puebla state, arrested Mauricio Izar Cardenas, the regional plaza boss allegedly responsible for Los Zetas' operations in southeastern Mexico. Despite these losses, Los Zetas have expanded into at least 17 states, giving the group among the widest geographic reach of all Mexico's cartels.

Since Los Zetas operate in more than half of Mexico's states, a conflict between the group's top leaders likely would trigger additional violence in multiple regions of the country. However, a rift between the top leaders is not the only scenario that could lead to internal conflicts. Los Zetas operate using compartmentalized cells and local leaders throughout Mexico and other countries, such as Guatemala. These cells typically follow the instructions of higher-level regional leaders and pay monetary dues but also may act independently from the larger organization. The June 1 narcomantas brought attention to these cells by implying that the arrest or death of several regional Los Zetas leaders resulted from betrayals by either Lazcano or Trevino.

Indications of an internal conflict will largely depend on where the rift within the organization forms, whether between Lazcano and Trevino or a breakaway Los Zetas cell. Currently, no such indications have manifested. Should Los Zetas suffer a significant internal conflict, their principal rivals, the Sinaloa Federation and its allies the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion and Gulf cartel, would take advantage of the rift by redoubling their efforts to take control of Los Zetas' plazas. This in turn would result in increased violence, as recently seen in Coahuila state. Los Zetas' rivals may also attempt to bring any potential splinter groups into their own fold, much like the split between the Gulf cartel and Los Zetas that led to the alignment of the Gulf cartel with the Sinaloa Federation.

Editor's Note:We now offer the daily Mexico Security Monitor, an additional custom intelligence service geared toward organizations with operations or interests in the region, designed to provide more detailed and in-depth coverage of the situation.

  28. Well I just want to see the toll on the federales side. I know about 12 marines died in Zacatecas that day too. No wonder Calderon in orderion 15,000 soldiers more to seven states including ZZZacatecaZZ ! Has to cover for losses. Like in Michoacan where 50 PFPs were killed in an ambush outside of Apatzingan better spelled Afganistan of Mexico.

  30. who is Lazca siding with in this new war, z40 or z50?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wtf? This is for honest people who actually know, whats up. If Coss and Comandate Diablo and R1 are all aligned with both CDS And CJNG. If Z50 hucked up with the Metros y lis Texas, does this mean that Z1 is also a homie with Los Escorpiones y los TT? Entonces, como es que some guys here say thay Z50 se alio al CDS si el Chapo es aliado del COSS y por lo tanto El Coss es enemigo de Los Metros? Como fregados esta esto, alguien que sepa y me conteste, thanks guys.

  32. HONESTLY, I SEE THIS AS A POTENTIAL STABILIZER IN MX, if a good chunk of Z goes w z50 to the cdg/ sinaloa side, and lazca is also against z40, then it would be very likely z40 goes down. too much stacked against him. CT also wants him? come on hes on the ropes! if all these big organizations team up and call a truce/ respect territories, you could see a dramatic decrease in violence. the first step is get rid of z40. hes a loose cannon homicidal nut. he doesnt respect anyones turf, and draws a lot of heat w his tactics. better for everyone if things cool down
