Saltillo: Zocalo Crime Beat Reporter and Son Missing

Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat..

UPDATE June 10th:  The General PGR has now become involved in the case announced this AM.

I went back to January of this year and forward  scanning  Cardoso's  Zocalo de Saltillo articles, to determine what subjects she writes about.  She is a crime reporter, but I could not find any articles with narco crimes or narco activity as her subject.  Many were of traffic accidents, seems Saltillo is a hotbed for lousy drivers, (something I never noticed).  Other articles were the type you would expect anywhere, break-ins, theft, domestic violence, child abuse, rape but none of organized crime.  It's very early and we have been given so little information, but it looks as though this young woman was selected to send a message.  They have released reporters in other kidnappings.  With her tiny toddler with her, we can only hope and pray for their safe return.....Paz, Chivis

At press time, and amidst unusual circumstances,  reporter Stephania Cardoso, 30,  who covers the  Zocalo police beat, remained missing along with her son, aged two.
After she did not arrive  to work and could not be reached via cell phone,  her family reported her missing, and her whereabouts unknown for one day.
The missing reporters twitter page.  She is not a frequent user, there is a mention the Freedom of Expression celebration, a few politcal remarks, but mostly personal  entries,  quotes and banter among colleagues and friends.

CELEBRATION
Cardoso was last seen between Thursday night and early yesterday morning, when she attended a party with her son celebrating the Day of Freedom of Expression, along with colleagues.
It was around 02:00 hrs yesterday that she left to her  home in la colonia Misión Cerritos, and minutes later notified her colleagues  that she had arrived home safely.
This morning, after unsuccessful attempts to reach Cardoso, her family went to her home to check on her.  When they arrived at the home they discovered Cardoso and her toddler son were missing. The home had been thrashed, with her belongs scattered about and her camera broken on the floor. Her vehicle is also missing.

In 2010, two Zocalo reporters were abducted.  Valentin Valdes Espinosa,  29, was abducted, then found shot to death in the the capital city of Saltillo in the Northern Mexican state of Coahuila.

Valdes,  also covered local crime news for the daily Zocalo de Saltillo, finished work at the paper around 11 p.m. and left the office with two colleagues, according to Editor-in-Chief Sergio Cisneros. While they were in a car in downtown Saltillo, a group of men in two SUVs intercepted them. Valdés and a reporter whose name has not been released were forced into one of the SUVs and driven away, Cisneros said.
Coahuila’s attorney general’s office said that Valdés was found dead early the next morning in front of the Motel Marbella, according to an official statement. Valdés had been tortured and shot several times, the statement said. The reporter was found with a message that read:
“This is going to happen to those who don’t understand. The message is for everyone."
Mexico remains one of the deadliest countries for reporters to work in.

  4. i am sorry for all your losses.
here in the US people are fed up with the cartel operatives and are using their cell phones to report any and all criminal activity.
we are also arming up and practicing.
concealed carry classes are filling up compared to years ago. fight mexico fight, your lives depend on it.
    God bless the innocent.

  5. Would somebody please explain how groups of men (not the teenagers who run around stealing and fighting) in hoods, camoulflauge and armed with bazookas, ak47s + grenades find rival sicaros, kidnapp and torture them without being seen or stop by Calderone's military. Do these cartel men live together in barracks or do they leave their wives + children every morning for 'work' and sneak hoods on to join there compadres for a day of slaughter?

It must be a life of paranoia wondering if today you're to toughest henchman but tomorrow your 'bro' betrays you in your own cartel and kills you???

The top capos live in luxury, the street teenagers scrounge the filthy streets BUT what about these groups of men in hoods and camoulflage--how do the operate in daily life?

    Intelligent answers appreciated.

    1. The sicarios live out of their trucks. When they hire on they are told that will be their lifestyle, they go home once a day (if that) to see their families . My husbands cousin only called home once a month and they now believe he has been killed since it has been over 6 months since he has called. The ones they call halcones work 12 hour shifts 6 days a week, they go home each night. I am so glad my husband never got involved. I just pray for peace in Mexico

  6. So sad! :( when will this stop?! Arm the people, reinstate the death penalty, root out all the corrupt leaders and make examples of them, offer poor youths education, sports, and community with more parks for children.

  7. I think the reporters get kiddnapped and killed because they are gossiping about corrupt officials connected to the cartels and also gossiping about the cartels themselves.I mean really if some one was on that gossip about you in the office or elsewhere that would get you mad and would make u wanna hit the person gossiping about u.The difference is most people dont do what they want to the gossiper out of fear of losing there jobs if its in the office or arent the type to get in fist fights also because of fear of getting hit back and loosing. All in all reporters are gossipers and cartels arent just gonna slap them in the hand there gonna give them the spray with bullets treatment. On this case im thinking the girl reporter might get tortured a bit but might be let go cuz of her baby shes lucky her baby is probably going to save her life and she might get released with just a warning or they might drop the baby off at a relatives house and kill her will see what happens.

  11. " ... she attended a party with her son celebrating the Day of Freedom of Expression, along with colleague. ... "

That could be the reason why she was abducted, the message is that THER IS NOTHING TO CELEBRATE and WE DO NOT GRANT YOU FREEDOM, 'WE' ARE IN CONTROL, WE OWN YOUR LIFE & WE ARE HERE TO USE YOU FOR OWN PURPOSES, WE WILL NOT PUT UP WITH THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT FREEDOM, WHO WANT POWER TO BE IN CONTROL OF YOUR OWN LIFE: PEOPLE OF MEXICO LIVING IN MEXICO, UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A DICTATORSHIP, YOU ARE OUR CATTLE ON OUR FARM, WE ARE FARMING YOU, ANIMALS ARE THAT SHOW THEY HAVE WILL POWER WILL BE DESTROYED and WE WILL MAKE AN EXAMPLE OF YOU, WE WILL KILL YOU IN FRONT OF THE OTHER ANIMALS TO TERRORIZE THEM IN ORDER THAT THEY WILL NOT TRY TO FREE THEMSELVES FROM THE DESTINY WE HAVE CHOSEN FOR THEM, EVERY ANIMAL ON OUR FARM IS HERE TO SERVE 'US'. !!!!

There is the message they send these low lives who have iinfested Mexico who carry weapons of all sorts instead carrying TOOLS TO WORK like ordinary GOOD Mexicans do daily. Your news coverage of the abduction of Stephania Cardoso and her baby brings out the worst in me and incites me into going to war and hunting down the rabied selfish heartless hateful arrogant animals who are destroying Mexico and it's citizens.

  15. I just got done looking for an update on Stephania Cardoso but found nothing yet. It would be a miracle if she were still alive.

One thought that came to mind tonight was the following:

"Reporters on on the criminal organizations Hit List: could reporter find a way to conceal security cameras to monitor their living quarters (house, apartment etc) so that if something happens to any reporter at least there would be something captured by video camera or time-lapse camera?!"
