Neglected War report:
There have been multiple rumors about the capture of Ismael “Mayo” Zambada, number two in the Sinaloa Cartel criminal organization.
The most formal source is Diario de Sinaloa, who states:
The Mexian Army managed to capture the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, in the town of Aguaje Sinloa,
The operation took place around 0700 Hrs. (Thursday). Zambada was captured along with several members of his bodyguards. Cocaine, guns, and cartridges were seized.
The Mexican Army transported the detainees from Sinaloa to the Office of Special Investigations for Organized Crime (SIEDO) in Mexico City. The prisoners will give their ministerial statements within 48 hours and their status will be defined. At that moment, they could be sent to a high security prison, or to a detention house for further investigation.
Mexican Marines tried to corner Ismael “Mayo” Zambada in the limits of Sinaloa and Durango states, but were unable to catch him.
Official sources from the National Defense mention Zambada Garcia was able to escape through the mountains, together with at least another 10 people.
The Marines tried to hunt him from the air, but “ El Mayo” had vanished.
The event took place Thursday afternoon in the Mountains of Sinaloa. The operation, say authorities, "was close to being a success."
Note from Ovemex: Although the account of his capture and subsequent escape have been all over the internet, I, personally, have been unable to find any credible news agency report much less any statement by Mexico authorities or military to confirm or deny the facts.
