Reporting on the Mexican Cartel Drug War

Culiacan update

Sunday, November 13, 2011 |

The Sinaloa cartel's traditional home city sees 11 more murders this weekend.

As deadly cartel violence is leveling off in Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Guerrero due to ongoing heavily reinforced military operations in those states, Culiacan has become the latest Mexican plaza to explode to levels of extreme violence and insecurity.

This weekend saw at least another 11 execution style murders and multiple armed clashes throughout Culiacan and neighboring communities.

Sunday morning at approximately 7:30AM the bodies of three unidentified men were discovered alongside a reservoir in the community of San Pedro, located on the the outskirts of Culiacan on the road to Navolato.

The men were bound and showed evidence of severe torture before being shot and killed with what authorities said was a "matapolicia" high powered FN Herstal firearm due to the presence of seven 5.7x28mm empty cartridge cases at the scene.

A memorial service was held Sunday morning at the headquarters of the Sinaloa State Police (Policia Estatal Preventiva) for Officer Rafael Castillo Segoviano of the PEP's Grupo Elite.

The police officer was murdered Friday night during an attack by unknown gunmen on a Grupo Elite patrol vehicle that had stopped at an Oxxo convenience store in the Pradera Dorada sector of Culiacan. Another police officer, a private security guard and a Universidad del Occidente professor were wounded by gunfire during the attack.

The professor of economics and business administration, Gustavo Oswaldo Lopez Reyes age 44, suffered a head wound and died of his injuries Saturday in a local hospital.

Culiacan's academic community was in shock over the loss of their companion professor.

In the words of Aaron Sanchez, rector of the Universidad del Occidente, "This is a loss that hurts us deeply. This is a difficult, complex situation. Unfortunately we are living at a time when this can happen to any of us at any minute."

Victor Antonio Corrales, rector at the Universidad Autonoma de Sinaloa, added, "What is happening to teachers outside of the university classrooms is lamentable. What we have is a situation where our citizens can no longer travel with any security, without the fear of being killed."

The private security guard, who remains unidentified, is in critical condition and may not survive.

More than 100 rounds of AK-47 AND AR-15 ammunition were fired at the victims of the convenience store attack, according to the crime scene investigation.

Victor Antonio Corrales, rector at the Universidad Autonoma de Sinaloa, added, "What is happening to teachers outside of the university classrooms is lamentable. What we have is a situation where our citizens can no longer travel with any security, without the fear of being killed."

In the early predawn hours of Sunday four other men were murdered in Culiacan.

Several men were gathered outside a home in the colonia Lazaro Cardenas when armed attackers arrived and opened fire on the group. Three men died of their wounds including Diego Rivas, a well known singer of "narcocorrido" ballads that specialized in celebrating "narco cultura" and the exploits of Sinaloa cartel personalities such as Mayo Zambada, los Antrax, el Machoprieto and others.

At least four other men were wounded in the Lazaro Cardenas attack.

In addition to Rivas, the other fatalities were identified as Jefrie Olguin Garcia and Alfredo Herrera Gomez.

Another man was executed in the colonia Diaz Ordaz by gunmen who attacked him as he was arriving at his residence. The victim was identified as Francisco Araiza Jimenez.

Saturday morning the bodies of two murder victims were discovered in different areas of Culiacan.

Francisco Javier Quevedo Sánchez was found in the Lomas de San Isidro with a gunshot wound to the head. Another unidentified male body was found in the colonia Las Coloradas in the city's southside.

In the meantime Sinaloa Governor Mario Lopez Valdez vowed in a news conference to send a second Grupo Elite state police tactical team to Culiacan to help regain control of the security situation in the city.

According to the Governor the team will reach the city in two weeks when a group of 40 officers graduates from a police academy in San Luis Potosi.

"This is what the state can offer Mayor Cuen (mayor of Culiacan) and his citizens", said Lopez Valdez.

Lopez Valdez, or Malova as he is commonly known, announced that he does not intend
to ask the federal government for any further assistance above and beyond the Army, Marine and Federal Police forces already in the state.

"We are confidant with the federal forces already in the state, we have a large deployment. We have no need to ask for further assistance"

Malova may not have been aware that the Sinaloa newspaper "El Noroeste" reported Saturday that a convoy of over 25 Federal Police vehicles, some of them armored cars, had passed through Mazatlan and were leaving the state to redeploy in Guadalajara.

According to one official in the convoy, the unit had left the northern area of the state.

Northern Sinaloa is the site of a continuous war of attrition between Sinaloa cartel cells in Guamuchil led by Orzo Iván Gastélum Cruz, el Cholo Ivan, and the "Limpia Mazatleca" faction of Beltran Leyva loyalists led by Fausto Isidro Meza Flores, el Chapo Isidro, that controls the neighboring municipality of Guasave and the area up to Los Mochis.

Malova also announced that the past few weeks had seen a dramatic decrease in crime in Mazatlan.

Sad about the professor, and the situation in general. How callous and cruel people are to cheer on the violence, in the name of 'pay back' for cds.

@ J...I know what Chapo did to Juarez for 5 years. What happened to that city and all the people there was so egregious, it was unconscionable. It was ruthless without conscience. Nasty, vile, heartless, and cruel beyond extreme. It was ignored, overlooked and blamed on the home plaza. Nobody cared because it was just ugly Juarez. CDS has done this in almost every plaza without exception. The very person most look at to overcome the cartel conflicts is the dirty snake that created all the conflicts. I didn't hear anything about concerns over losses of students or professors when it was in Juarez. Thirty people could die in Juarez over a weekend and all we would see was 2 men died in Culiacan and 3 in Monterey. I am very sorry. I have watched the deterioration of a city that is very dear to me for going on six years. The message hear is, "what goes around comes around." Mexico never forgets. In my simple opinion, we are seeing the poor stand up and say enough is enough. No El Chapo, you cannot have all of Mexico. It certainly seems that something very sinister is moving on Chapo but I must say, he certainly knows a lot about sinister doesn't he?

I always thought Calderon would sell El Chapo out before 2012. What better way is there to cover his tracks. It looks like the Federal Police are running the other way on this one. The protection may be gone because Mayo's boy has exposed the US Government and that is never a good thing. It looks like the real powers are saying "you are own your own now 'Shorty'."

CDS is not looking good lately. I really hate them the most. The Zetas are scumbags and all that is evil but CDS always tries to come across as the "good guys". Hipocrites. Juarez and other cities endured months of this type of violence because of these greedy bastards. Fuck them hope they get it bad too one day.

Does anybody know what the hell is going on in Culican? What exactly are they fighting for? Is it harassment/payback against the CDS? Is there some strategic reason?

Would be nice to gain some insight into exactly what is taking place here.

Sorry for Rivas, but at this point, the war against Chapo by Carrillo's and Leyva's factions are only going to get bloodier, for anyone supporting Chapo. Navolato, Mazatlan, and Mochis are the fronts that are being protected, but Culiacan is where CDS's people play, collect, and sleep. Their bringing the war to Chapo's front yard - and Chapo is striking back (although it was him that took the Carrillo war to the next level after his men took out crucial family members. The new Juarez Cartel has always had alot of backing in Sinaloa - and the Beltran Leyvas have always been held in high regard by the Carrillos, back to Amado's early days with Zambada and Arturo. This war isn't about territory, it's about proving a point to Chapo, you kill 5 of ours, we kills 8 of yours - at a volleyball court, in broad daylight. Gastelum's (Cazares old crew) faction in Guamuchil is getting pounded by the Leyvas and Antrax were essentially caught off guard. Word is the Torres family and (Ms)crews have gone underground, pulling their kids from their private schools and social networks like facebook. The precedence has been set, no respect for minors or family. You know someone, work for someone, carry cash for someone, you're going down - and your friend too. It's going to be an even more dangerous life for Culichis now.

Good information here.

TRC, I know about that, it is hell for the citizens in either, and any city, that are subject to the blood and turmoil of these conflicts. I feel compassion for all of them. So, maybe cds gets 'its due', whatever, it's all a cycle of killing and cruelty that is a true tragedy in every sense of the word.

The way I see things going CDS will stay in one part of Sinaloa and BLO on the other, Zetas will possibly take out CDG now that LFM can't help them and Zetas will keep Tamaulipas, Juarez will stay with its original owner, and CT will stay with Michoacan and Guanajuato maybe Guerrero and all these groups will have to come to some sort of agreement and CDJNG will maybe keep control of Jalisco that's if Zetas or La Resistancia doesn't take it away now that CDS is having problems at home and CAF for the most part is in no shape able to fight anyone but things aren't looking good for CDS why isn't the infamous M1 living up to his corridos and hunting people down? Where's los antrax at? Gente nueva? Chapitos? El Fantasma? What's really happening is that Chapos federal police and army friends have been cut and his crew can't fight these groups who have been fighting through Federal Police and the Military since 2006 ex Zetas BLO LFM

Anonymous said...

its funny that still people think that CDG is done but in fact they still control impormant/most plazas in Tamaulipas and still operate in veracruz, nuevo leon(huge presence in monterrey) and has a presence in zacatecas....

Anonymous said...

Sinaloa Belongs to Los Beltran I guess...

Anonymous said...

By by Rivas you reap what you soe. Did anyone notice that when the military is in town there is a dramatic drop in violence generally,so when the military leaves all that is left is tainted local police an unarmed public??

J said...

Which is probably part of their motivation, Sinaloa doesn't belong to the Beltrans, the most powerful drug cartel, headed by a billionaire doesn't fold in a weekend, because of 20 murders. Not propaganda just the way I see it.

Are narco banners/messages being phased out? Yo hardly see them anymore. That is exaggeration, but it used to be something like this happened and banners were up right away. CDG hardly communicates anymore either.

Anonymous said...

Chapo fucked up when he betrayed la familia (los caballeros) cause they're the only cartel that will give either the ratazzzz or beltranezzz a fight.

Anonymous said...

where does it say it was Bl/Zetas that did this did I miss it? or is everyone here just Chapo haters BL/Z fanboys? What if this is CDS taking out the fools that missed their assingment with el Artista getting gunned down??

Anonymous said...

People are just speculating... I'm from Culiacan, and word on the street is CDS is putting in work because of what happened to Pancho... & la Neta Que Si cierto, CDS no caira de la noche ala manana... Esto apenas se esta poniendo bueno

Anonymous said...

@ J...You are very right. This at this point, is nothing more then a few dead street thugs and a few cops. This happened in Juarez every single night for 5 long years. It is nothing, but it is a bold statement about what is to come. I think most of us are just a little shocked that CDS has not retaliated by now. It kind of gives the impression they may be spread a little thin nation wide. But it sure seems like he could have possibly lost his federal support. If that is true, he has a lot of enemies and it could be real trouble. Personally, I smell a big tribunal and a truce coming real soon. The Federal police ran off, and the governor is crying because he doesn't have qualified men to handle this? Come on! To me, it smells like the US is pissed off about Mayo's boy running his mouth and they told Calderon to move over and let the chips fall where they may. PRI is coming back strong and Chapo is a PAN boy. This could have them taking cover too.

CDS has been hit hard this year with what, around 200 tons of marijuana busted, at least twenty, 2 to 10 ton cocaine busts, and 2 astronomical ephedrine busts not to mention all the meth labs busted. Now, even if he were to recoup 50% of the busted loads, those knock huge holes in a budget and the payoffs are still there with their hands out wanting their cuts anyway. CDS hasn't taken hits on personnel like the others but they have damn sure taken some hits to the wallet.

El Chapo is easily expendable. Nothing to that. He is just a mascot. It would be a feather in someones cap on the way out, and a truce would give the appearance that PAN has done their job. Just in time for the elections. Just thinking out load.

But a lot of us have been following this drug war since long before the cartels wars. I hope we aren't just having wishful thinking that some sort of end is coming soon.

@7:18pm
Actually la familia returned to their rat creators, the Z. The rest were smarter and pulled out to create Los caballeros. They (LFM) got greedy and wanted Jalisco and Colima, CDS didn't approve of this and gave CDJNG (gente de Coronel) the green light to take out LFM and Milenio members who were actually the ones who betrayed Coronel.

"Sinaloa Governor Mario Lopez Valdez vowed in a news conference to send a second Grupo Elite state police tactical team to Culiacan to help regain control of the security situation in the city."

so i guess the Governor has given enough time to the cartel responsible for these murders to show who is boss, "teach the community a lesson", so it's time to play cops again...shame on him also for saying "this is what we can offer" a two week wait...either way, with the "elite" police force or not, it is clear who runs these towns...

Anonymous said...

All of you people saying this and that about this cartel and the other, about poor ugly Juarez and what chapo did, and what he has done to every city, just shut up already. What did you do when drugs were being distributed and the violence was not as brutal? Nothing. You did nothing. Neither did anybody anywhere else. Ever since I can read about 40+ years ago at age 5 I can read about drugs and drug trafficking. who started it? THE USA with it's contracts for WWII as main supply routes form Turkey were cut off, they handed contracts to grow Opium in Sinaloa, plenty of people made honest money, the war ended but the supply kept on. All we are seeing here is a continuation of the opium wars, and before that the spice wars, just bear with it, keep your good hopes about how humanity is such a great retarded race and live and let live, it's called humanity. In Somalia you will get butchered for a kilo of rice, it is called supply, demand and the people who harness it. We were born this way and we will die this way, we don't change, we have a short memory span. We need re-set buttons every tow million years in way of meteorites exterminating our habits and species and then who ever survives has a fresh start and begins with new tales, and legends and myths.

Enjoy your beliefs while they last, stay out of trouble, play the 'opinion' game for all it's worth and enjoy your loved ones, make sure that you leave enough good memories for them to remember you with gratitude vs contempt.

Viva la vida que ya nacio loka!
