Chapitos Narco Banner Threatens Los Mayos in San José del Cabo, Baja California del Sur

By "El Huaso" for Borderland Beat

On Monday morning, narco banners signed by the Los Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, threatening their rivals, gunmen for Mayito Flaco, appeared across San José del Cabo.
Social media users claimed the banners were located in Guaymitas, San José Viejo, and El Zacatal.

The banner stated:

THIS IS A MESSAGE FOR EVERYONE WHO THINKS THEY HAVE ALREADY WON THE PLAZA. THIS IS JUST BEGINNING, YOU BUNCH OF MAYITO FLACO ASSES AND 00s WHO CAN ONLY DO IT WITH THE GOVERNMENT ON YOUR SIDE, AND WITH THE HELP OF CHRISTIAN AGUNDEZ. YOU BUNCH OF PIGS — TO ALL THOSE WHO SWITCHED SIDES, I WANT YOU TO KNOW WE ALREADY HAVE YOU LOCATED. ONE BY ONE YOU WILL FALL. WE REMAIN ACTIVE.
ATT: LA CHAPIZZA.

The message gains weight in the context of two recent shootings in Los Cabos, uncommon for the usually peaceful vacation city.

The first shooting occurred on May 31, when a confrontation between gunmen and the Mexican military in Santa Anita, Los Cabos, left two soldiers injured, five civilians wounded, and one U.S. citizen from California dead. Three days later, three hitmen were killed and another was arrested after a government operation in San José del Cabo, in an operation likely intended to find the culprits of the earlier attack.

The number of homicides in Baja California Sur doubled last year as the rival Chapitos and Mayos factions of the Sinaloa Cartel violently dispute the state, a crucial transit region for fentanyl trafficking.

The homicide count doubled in 2025, from 56 to 113. Disappearances increased even more, with a 164% jump between 2024 and 2025, rising from 67 reports to 206. Now, the state has the third highest disappearance rate in the nation, with 24.1 cases per 100,000 people.

Government arrests of Sinaloa-born gunmen in the regions of La Paz, Mulege, Comondú, and Loreto are a near weekly occurrence, revealing that while the conflict has continued after news headlines have moved on. In early March, security forces arrested Francisco Javier Ibarra Romo, “El Burro”, a leader of the Chapitos’ armed wing “Los Burros”  in Comondú, who contested the region with the Mayos armed wing “Los Venados”.

  4. All of the Chapitos territories are vanishing away. They also lost territory in Chihuahua and Sonora. Pretty soon they will resemble the current Zetas which are disorganized small numbers of cells that all look like cheap gang members in skinny jeans. Nuff Said!!!

  9. Why can't they ever hire a decent sign maker? You can goto any market in Mexico and find someone selling custom made signs. Come on, get it together.
