Butcher Shops Under Fire in Villahermosa, Tabasco - Three Workers Killed In Two Weeks

By "El Huaso" for Borderland Beat

Two butcher shops have been attacked by criminals in the past month in Villahermosa, Tabasco as a local crime group seeks to levy new extortion fees on the sector.

The most recent attack occurred at carnicería Grijalva on the morning of 4 May, when two workers were shot and killed. No witnesses have spoken to the media describing the attacker.

On April 21, a manager was shot and killed inside at El Jarocho Carnicerías in the El Espejo I neighborhood, also in Villahermosa. The business remains closed as a result. The three attackers were later captured by authorities in possession of firearms and narcotics.

Organized crime groups in Mexico often engage in sector wide extortion, imposing taxes on all businesses of the same type in a region. The case of lime farmers in Michoacán is the most infamous, but criminal groups target tire repair shops in Guanajuato, and bars in Quintana Roo.

Extortion rates in Mexico have reached their highest level ever. In Tabasco state, the number of extortion victims increased of 36.81% between 2024 and 2025. Combatting extortion is a main focus of President Claudia Sheinbaum's security policy. Sheinbaum is working to pass new legislation stiffening penalties for extortion and increasing government capacity to investigate the crime.

  3. I've heard of tortilla shops and smoke shops getting extorted but not butcher shops until now. I guess all types of businesses are up for grabs in Mexico. This guys is what you call a lawless country. No law and order. No progress for Mexico since I've been reading BB for the past decade. Nuff Said!!!

  4. Arriba la plebada del morro
    Ay yayai !
    "Estaban moliendo caña
    En su ranchito querido
    Buscaban a Baltazar
    Para llevarlo al presidio
    Eran buenos cazadores
    Con experiencia al bolido
    Un venado lampareado
    Es difícil de cazar
    Aunque le pongan la trampa
    Tiene experiencia al brincar
    Se quedaron con las ganas
    Se les peló Baltazar
Solo el que carga el morral
    Le sabe su contenido
    Por eso la federal
    Quería llevarlo al presidio
    No se le comprobó nada
Se les bajó en el camino
Se fue con rumbo a la sierra
    Montado en su bailador
    Su black nigger escula
    Que lo quiere con amor
    Lo mismo baila un huapango
Que un corrido o una canción
    Ay black nigger hermoso
Desde el filo de la sierra
    Tus luces yo las diviso
    Como mirar las estrellas
    Como extraño a mis amigos
    También a mi linda güera
Con una black nigger muy buena
    Lo vamos a celebrar
    Cantándole este corrido
    Lo vamos a recordar
