Nephew of 'Mayo' Zambada, Was Murdered Inside a Truck South of Culiacán

The man found murdered inside the trunk of a Ford Bronco, parked in front of the UAS Agronomy Faculty in Culiacán, was the nephew of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada.

According to reports, the deceased was identified by his family as 41-year-old Sergio Rodolfo Cázares Zambada, a resident of the Las Quintas neighborhood in the state capital.

Cázares Zambada's body was discovered in the final minutes of Sunday, February 8, in the trunk of a gray, late-model Ford Bronco SUV, which had been abandoned on the Culiacán-Eldorado highway in front of the UAS Agronomy Faculty in the Costa Rica district.

The deceased was wearing black pants and a black t-shirt and had multiple gunshot wounds.

During Tuesday's morning press conference, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, was questioned about the case and responded that the identity isn’t yet confirmed and that the incident is part of a broader context of recent violence in the state.

"We still don't have a confirmed identity. As soon as we do, we will release the specific identity of this person. There is no complete information on this case," he stated.

Sergio Rodolfo Cázares, son of Águeda Zambada García, sister of Mayo Zambada, was arrested in 2012 along with his cousin Omar Ismael Zambada, son of Jesús Reynaldo "El Rey" Zambada, while traveling in a vehicle in Tijuana, Baja California.

During that arrest, authorities seized at least 20 kilograms of cocaine from the car they were traveling in, and also arrested two people identified as bodyguards, Raúl Palacios and Cristhian Villalpando.

The detainees were transferred under heavy security to Mexico City, where they were placed at the disposal of the Attorney General's Office and the Specialized Organized Crime Investigation Unit (SIEDO), but were later released.
