Trump Doesn't Care About Drug Trafficking

“Sol Prendido” for Borderland Beat

It has become common to hear that, for Trump to be on favorable terms with Mexico, we must attack drug trafficking. Controlling organized crime, it is said, is Trump's main objective.

The problem with these assertions is that, while they align with Trump's rhetoric, they don't match his actions. What Trump's actions reveal is that the US president doesn't care about drug trafficking.

Let's start with the obvious. If Trump truly wanted to destroy organized crime and reduce fentanyl overdose deaths, he would start by fighting within the main stronghold of global drug trafficking and its main source of income: the United States itself.

Not only is this not happening, but several Trump policies are openly geared in the opposite direction.

Trump has facilitated the sale of weapons within the United States (many of which end up in the hands of drug traffickers), has cut billions of dollars from state health services budgets (reducing addiction treatment), has reduced housing support for homeless people (which is expected to further increase addictions), and, in the height of cynicism, has pardoned convicted drug traffickers (such as former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández).

Trump's true interest, as it was in Venezuela and as it is in almost all his actions, is economic.

Drug trafficking is merely an excuse that Trump is using to extract all kinds of economic concessions from Mexico, from a more favorable negotiation of the USMCA to special favors for American industries or companies.

The drug trafficking excuse is perfect for Trump because the problem cannot be solved from Mexico. It doesn't matter how much Mexico does. It doesn't matter how many people it arrests or how many drugs it confiscates; drug trafficking will continue as long as the United States has a multi-million dollar market of captive consumers. Just yesterday, El País reported that a new Chapo has emerged in Sinaloa. Drug trafficking is, in Trumpian terms, the best bargaining chip Trump could have found. It's an issue that will keep Mexico running in circles, constantly giving in without ever reaching a solution. It must be acknowledged that Trump's idea of finding and using this excuse is diabolically brilliant.

For all these reasons, it is urgent that Mexican negotiators stop making decisions based on what Trump says he wants and start making them based on what Trump reveals as his true preferences through his actions.

If the goal is for Trump to be on better terms with Mexico, the focus, rather than on security matters, should be on economic issues.

That is, Mexico should maintain certain visible actions against drug trafficking, but it should focus the majority of its resources and talent on developing a strategy that helps Trump fight his most desired economic battle: competing with China. To the extent that Trump sees Mexico as indispensable in waging this economic battle, Mexico will be protected against the volatility of the United States.

  4. Breaking news, water is wet. Waiting for further confirmation that the sun is hot. In all seriousness, if they just bide their time, several addicts and recreational drug users will die, but many more will take their place. I was clean for over 2 years but recently had to taper off methadone because I cant afford it anymore. I dont think that the world is long for me but I have been wrong before. I used to be a polar opposite of the shel of myself that is me today The leaders of Perdue Pharma should be in prison for what they did but tha will never happen now. Scapegoat the scary brown people. Right out of the US OF a's official playbook.

  5. Give the motherfacker the Torre Latinoamericana and The Palacio de Bellas Artes, with new signage to match his overblown ego, and El Zócalo where he could want to make a brand new Asphalt Plaza to land his helicóteros full of cocaina and minors...
Oops, add the Palacio Nacional, the russians could buy it for him, for 1 dollar cash and 100 billion secreted in Krypto, he could want to house Noem's dogs rite there, people tell me the area is full of mexicans.

  7. You clearly DO NOT understand the drug trafficking fight. If you want to help readers understand facts, stick to the news.

Feel free to share your opinions. Just clarify those opinions as that. Not actual facts.

Unless you’re just trying to raise money for your articles. Go for it.

  10. Its hard to give this story any creditability when it is clearly written by someone with a big case of TDS.

Trump has facilitated the sale of weapons within the United States....this is clearly a lie as the President has no authority or ability to sell weapons within the US.

Has cut billions of dollars from state health services budgets (reducing addiction treatment), has reduced housing support for homeless people (which is expected to further increase addictions)....Once again both of these statements are big lies as it is the House of Representatives that controls the budget and spending and spending for both of these programs continue to increase, while the rate of growth is being slowed......$100's of billions are still being wasted via fraud and abuse.

Has pardoned convicted drug traffickers (such as former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández).....any reasonable person that has studied this case would agree that he was politically railroaded similar to what Trump himself experienced and why he chose to right the wrong.....facts matter....maybe we should start there.

  13. Trump's political reality is the swing states and the influence of the crime organizations on the working classes. He's got a nationalist, protectionist mandate, but there are domestic mafias and less well known foreign criminal groups that are riding that wave and planning to capitalize on crackdowns against their higher profile foreign rivals. Criminal groups in the US are territorial like dogs are territorial, the redneck mafias especially, the Indians invaded through tactics of corrupting, addicting and organizing the lowest people in the American social order. Dogs don't think that they're people, dogs think people are other dogs. Dogs think that you have a dog psychology. Trump relies on these kinds of people along with the elites who have a rational, self-preservation kind of a judgment about the necessity of his policies.

  15. Sol, the issue is it's illegal to transport Fent or any other controlled substance across the border. No transport no drugs in America. Simple. Mexicans are the smugglers, the poisoners. Mexico needs help combating cartels, they cant control it.

  22. This article aligns with some of my previous comments. Mexico has had a lot of economic progress under the last and current administration. Its taken actions to remove foreign interest from the energy, petroleum, minerals and precious metals sectors to name a few. AMLO has opted to negotiate with the Chinese for national infrastructure projects because unlike the U.S, the Chinese allow for both parties to equally benefit without one being taken advantage of the other. I mentioned both the USMXCA and the Bicentennial agreement which cements Cooperation between the three nations, the only ones not keeping true to their part of the agreement is the U.S. drugs continue to enter, firearms continue to be exported south as criminals are captured and extradited only to be released and given sweet deals by the U.S.... I wouldn't doubt if Milenio read my comments and took inspiration, either way, its great that its being exposed. Good looking out on this article SOL.

And by the way youll be surprised at how many mexicans would be on the side of trump if he does attack no matter his true objectives.

  29. Economic drivers in Mexico are controlled by organized crime. Drugs, petroleum, minerals, tourism, government. For example; if the Sinaloa Cartel collapsed and disappeared the economy in Sinaloa would collapse with it. Corruption is too deeply embedded. "No pasa nada" is tattooed on the hearts of it's citizens. Mexicans just don't care any more.

  31. Donal trump used to care about drug trafficking, it saved his ass after bankrupting the taj-mahal.
According to his biographer, a joseph weischelbaum was on his way to prison after getting convicted for drug trafficking in 3 states, including Florida, his case was sent to New York for sentencing and ended on judge Mary Trump' desk, she recused herself and the case ended on somebody else's desk that gave joseph a very light sentence after serving it, donal gave weischelbaum a job as a tromp helicopter pilot and a million dollar apartment for him and his brother, "just because donal' had a very tender heart for drug traffickers when younger", and still has it, according to former Honduras president, juan orlando hernandez, the Silk Road founder and other Kryipto coiners.

Y’all don’t approve that but post all these weirdos and there disrespectful comments that half the time aren’t even talking about the article. There’s hell of new articles about chapo Isidro and BB ain’t posting none of them.

  36. Article from El Pais which BB refers to.

The infighting between factions has left the main ones battered, especially Los Chapitos, commanded by the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the old regional drug lord. Of the four sons, only two remain at large, living on the run and stripped of their key lieutenants, who have either been killed or captured. Their enemies — the sons and followers of their father’s former partner, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada — have emerged stronger from the war. But the biggest victory in all this violent chaos belongs to neither faction.

A new “Chapo” is emerging in Sinaloa, less media-savvy than his predecessor, but just as capable of exporting drugs north. Security sources consulted by EL PAÍS indicate that the main beneficiary of the cartel war is, beyond a doubt, the group led by Fausto Isidro Meza Flores, alias “El Chapo" Isidro. One of the U.S. government’s biggest enemies, Meza Flores runs a major operation producing and trafficking synthetic drugs, fentanyl, and methamphetamine, primarily in northern Sinaloa, especially in Los Mochis and Guasave. “He exports more drugs than everyone else,” one of the sources asserts. “He’s the big winner of the war; he’s very powerful,” the same source adds, a surprising statement given the events of December.

  42. Stay tuned because a DC insider shared with me that the administration is going to take direct action in Mexico against the drug trafficking organizations- with or without Sheinbums permission. Screenshot it because I’ll be back to say, “I told you so.” Mexico will agree or the US will do it without their permission. It’s coming…

    ReplyDelete
  43. And PS: you don’t know what you’re talking about. Mexico is a failed state. If you want to talk about arrests, they’d have to include arresting themselves. The US isn’t going to tolerate a failed State on its border and what happened in Venezuela is part of a broader policy of controlling the western hemisphere. Countries are going to get on board or the US is going to handle it. Mexico is on the clock. You’ll see 😉
