60 Bodies Found in Sonora; Authorities Confirm They Were Victims of Kidnapping Between Criminal Groups

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

The Sonora State Attorney General's Office reported that the bodies of 60 men were found in a rural area of Hermosillo, the capital of the state bordering Arizona. The discoveries occurred between January and February of this year and correspond to people kidnapped during a wave of score-settling between criminal organizations operating in the region.

In a statement, the state authority stated that all the victims were identified through scientific evidence and that the remains have already been returned to their families. In addition, the arrest of at least five people related to the events was reported.

The increase in violence in Sonora has been attributed to constant clashes between organized crime groups vying for control of routes used for drug and migrant trafficking to the United States.

This massive discovery reflects the severity of the security crisis facing the north of the country, where territorial disputes have led to a sustained increase in homicides, disappearances, and forced displacement. Investigations continue to determine the responsibility of the groups involved and clarify the chain of command behind the murders.

    1. It’s horrific to see people treated like this regardless of their association with certain groups. I’m pretty certain that there are innocent victims here who were picked up due to their economic status.

    1. Not all were involved in criminal activity. A “wave of kidnappings” includes innocent people who were caught at wrong place wrong time, or they were hit kidnapped because they lived in the area and were driving or walking angry just became a number for the wave to clean the competition or rival cartel cells.

    5. @3:40, three combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, I’ve experienced and seen lots.

You’d think there'd be much more of an uproar from the families of the victims and society in general, regardless if they were cartel or innocent.

Is Mexican society really that callous and/or far gone?

    6. 10:54 did you get an oscar up the ass for your performance in Iraq and afganistan?
Mexicans did not get the suppressed news...

    7. 10:54. Yes it is unfortunately. Mexico stopped being a country probably since after 9/11. Prior to that, things were way different and people had decency and repudiation for violence. There was drug trafficking but the main perpetrators would get punished in silence and it was something only a small fraction of the population was a part of. Hence the creation of cartels. I know a lot has been said about this cartel or that cartel but the reality of this is, Mexican society changed and along that change came all kinds of sadistic fantasies and things we see now. People talk and oppose foreign intervention in Mexico but I truly doubt there is any other way out of this for Mexicans. Over 20 years of constant psychological terror, how do you treat a patient like that?. You call a professional or “the” professionals to treat such a problem.

Never served but Mexican American here. Was born and raised around that area they talk about in this article and later on legally migrated to the US. I have seen and lived through a lot while in Mexico and have immediate relatives in high up positions there. I know what I’m talking about also.

    9. @10.54. You did 3 combat tours? And you celebrate innocents being kidnapped, tortured, and murdered?
Did you bother reading the article? The victims weren't criminals, they may have been "tied" (5 year old nephews) to criminal groups. But you clap. Shame on you. You're either a liar or you're suffering from serious PTSD.

    10. @8.16. Mexico stopped being a country after 9 /11? What are you talking about? If you want to talk about PAN and the huge changein traffickers protection then ok. Millions of vibrant, happy people, but they're a "patient"? Sick? You should save up dude, and go back to the places in Mexico you never saw. If you really think foreign intervention is the only answer you've been sold a lie by your "high up" relatives.

      Operation 40 in the 50s
      Operation Condor 70s
Operation BS since the 50s until today, is about 75 years of foreign intervention, "to protect Latin-América from the "comunistas" while trafficking drugs to the US, mostly by republicans and their governments.

    1. What authorities? Every single "authority" they seek help from is leaky, meaning the day they ask for help will be the the day before their door is kicked in at 4am and they vanish.

  9. This is the Salazar people. They killed one of my uncles just because he was hired to guard a construction site overnight that probably belonged to someone they didn’t like. They picked him up, interrogated him and chopped him up to pieces after they got nothing out of him. Innocent man working a simple job and gets to die that way. All the while they were recording and laughing. These people will face hell punishment. I’m sure there are other groups there too but the Salazar family is probably the only issues Sonora has. Those fuckers are animals.
