It was Sunday, August 14, and for the past week, Ivan arranged a reunion for family and close associates at The Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa. The following day, Monday, would also be the 33rd birthday of Ivan Archivaldo Guzman-Salazar.
Some guests would check out on Monday, so Ivan organized a birthday dinner Sunday evening away from the resort. The dinner reservation was set at La Leche for Sunday at 9 PM.
The large group of dinner guests would require 5 vehicles to travel the 5.5 km/3.4 mi distance from the resort to the restaurant. It's uncommon for hotel guests to use their personal or rental car instead of a cab for a night out at this distance.
The dinner guest did not leave the hotel in convoy.
Group 1 arrived at 9:03 PM and consisted of 3 males and 1 female. Group 1 walks into the restaurant, bypasses the host, and sits with the pre-dinner guests drinking.
Group 3 was the last group to arrive at 9:28 PM and consisted of 2 females.
This is the only video provided that shows guests entering the establishment. The government leaked edited portions of the video days after the kidnapping.
The dinner table has been set for 16, and 10/16 guests have appeared on video. Of the 10, 6/8 are females, and 4/8 are males. The dinner group is missing 2 females and 4 males. The number of guests, 16, is from the reservation, and I question the accuracy.
Another piece of the puzzle, showing the 6 abducted. The government released pictures of the six kidnapped. Initially, everyone repeats that Jesus was kidnapped, and he appeared at the top. In hindsight, the person at the top is Ivan.
Of the six kidnapped who appear, "male 1" is the only one shown walking in as part of group 1.
From my research, these would be the 6 names that got kidnapped.

- Jose Manuel Diaz Burgos, 25 (cousin)
- Juan Daniel Tapia Calva, 53
- Josiah Nahuali Rabago Borbolla, 35
- Victor Galvan Urena, 46
- Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar, 29
It was later reported that 3 brothers, Ivan, Jesus, and Cesar, were kidnapped.

There are a lot of unknowns about who is at the restaurant, including the total number of guests. Another factor is most of the males used false identification and vehicle registration.
Why did the government not release the entrance to the restaurant of Ivan, Jesus, and the others? It feels like some kind of coordination between the government and the criminals not to release the entire video was established.
In the final chapter, we examine the kidnappers, their motives, and who might have been responsible.

DeleteIn Vallarta, resorts that are not franchised are mainly owned by the cartel for money laundering purposes. I have heard stories from hotel employees at a dozen resorts and they all have said that groups have stayed.

Having too many guards is a red flag and only brings negative attention. I will discuss further in the next chapter, but the flashy cars was just asking for trouble.

DeleteThere's other variables, the Menchito being in custody one. Damaso may have wanted them kidnapped, and disappeared rather than killed on sight, but it's hard to shake that idea, that if it was anyone other than CJNG, they would have left them there.
