"La Vaca" Leader Of Cartel Independiente De Colima Captured In CDMX, Vehicle Fires Reported In Colima

"Mica", "Ivan", and "HEARST" for Borderland Beat

Note: This is a breaking news story and initial reports may be inaccurate.

José Bernabé Brizuela Meraz, alias “La Vaca”, the CJNG defector and leader of the Colima Independent Cartel, was arrested in Mexico City.

La Vaca is one of the most well known rivals of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generation, a group he used to work for but famously left and currently fights against. For all the background history about who La Vaca is as well as his criminal history, please see this previous story.

The Arrest is Announced

The head of Mexico City police, Omar Garcia Harfuch made an announcement at 9:53 pm on August 18, 2022, writing:

In a coordinated operation of SEDENA and SSC_CDMX, José Bernabé "N", one of the main generators of violence in Colima, was arrested within the Miguel Hidalgo neighborhood. Mexico City is not, nor will it be, a refuge for criminals. Thanks to SEDENA for its constant support for CDMX.

Colima’s top journalist Oscar Ádrian Luna tweeted out confirmation, writing:

José Bernabé Brizuela Meraz, alias "La Vaca", leader of the Colima Independent Cartel, was apprehended in Mexico City by elements of the SEDENA and the SSC, Governor Indira  Vizcaíno announced tonight.

The Terror Unleashed on Colima After the Arrest

Almost as soon as La Vaca’s arrest was announced, a series of violent acts, like the creation of narco blockades by burning commandeered vehicles and the shooting up of convenience stores, sprang up all across the state of Colima. These acts were presumably committed by La Vaca's followers as a form of protest and retaliation for his arrest.

Newspaper El Universal described it as follows:

At least seven vehicles were set on fire and a convenience store was shot at last night and early this morning in the metropolitan area of Colima and Villa de Álvarez following the arrest in Mexico City of José Bernabé Brizuela, alias "La Vaca”... It was preliminarily reported that three vehicles were set on fire on Calzada Galván, in downtown Colima; one more was located on Belisario Domínguez street and one more was reported in Colonia Magisterial.

Also, in Villa de Álvarez, another car was reported burned on García Conde Street and a pickup truck in Colonia Morelos.

The following are some tweets about the violent acts being committed:

"Unofficial information. These are the areas of Colima and Villa de Álvarez where until midnight violent events were reported in reaction to the capture of José Bernabé Brizuela, La Vaca, leader of the Colima Independent Cartel."

-Oscar Ádrian Luna

"Burning of vehicles reported in Calzada Galvan, Colima, after the capture of "La Vaca".

-Oscar Ádrian Luna

"Another vehicle burned in Colonia Liberación, VdeÁ, in front of La Campana."

-Oscar Ádrian Luna

Next in Line

So who is La Vaca’s second in command, currently ordering all these attacks in Colima? It still needs further research but we do know that Twitter user Jaliscienses alleges Carlos Miguel Meraz Mercado, aliases “El Abulon” and “El Coco”, is the man organizing all these narco blockades.

Please note, Abulon is referred to in some sources as Carlos Miguel Meraz Mercado, which is the reverse order of his surnames. It is currently unclear which surname order is correct but what’s more interesting is that La Vaca’s full name is allegedly José Bernabé Brizuela Meraz, which may mean that Abulon is his half brother.

El Abulon has been brought up in local Facebook groups like Pareja La Oreja and La Verdad de Mexico in recent months as a high ranking direct report of Vaca.

The group Denuncia anónima La Costa alleged on July 4, 2022, that El Abulon was currently hiding out in the La Costa region of the neighboring state of Michoacan with a fellow CJNG enemy, Héctor Zepeda Navarrete, alias “El Teto”, from Carteles Unidos.

El Teto is believed to be part of a cell of Carteles Unidos that also includes Germán Ramírez Sánchez, alias “El Toro”, and the Pulidos crime family. For more details on Teto, Toro and Pulidos, please see this previous story.

  2. Interesting that La Vaca was hiding in CDMX but not surprised at all. Reminded me of when El Licenciado was captured in CDMX in the war against Ivan El Chapito.

Just yesterday an alliance was announce between La Vaca and CDN, seemed like La Vaca was in constant communication with his people fighting in Colima maybe that was what got him caught. Lastly, it seems like CJNG will win the Colima battle after La Vaca was captured...

I mean if you were in his shoes, you would also have to worry about one of your own men selling you out for money or maybe while being tortured. Its crazy....the game in Mexico is definitely a VERY VERY TIMES 1,000 TOUGH.

I get that people want to make money. But wow. You know Mexico is one of the big economies of the world. And yet their poor folks risk the limbs with the cartels. It's crazy how rampant this Is in Mexico. Compared to other countries.

  13. This is probably a relief to CDN. They are only a shadow of the Zetas and it is unlikely that they have the ability to contest territory that far from their home base in Coahuila and Tamaulipas. Not to mention the arrest and deportation of El Huevo which most likely is having a negative affect on their leadership and organizational structure.
CDN can't win a war against CJNG. This is a good time for them to back out of their new alliance or to deny that any alliance existed in the first place.

    1. CDN is not in Coahuila, they can’t even come here they always get chased out

      Delete
    3. Zetas vieja escuela still around and the cdn is still headed by a treviño that was challenging el huevo already. Cdn has el tori and some guy nicknamed el comandante or some shit. A military guy. And as long as el z 40 is on mexican soil they will continue to exist. Also cdn dont have to fight jaliscas all over they just need to keep them out of nuevo laredo. And keep a a way to bring drugs in to nuevo laredo like from monterey

CJNG confront smaller cartel-violence explodes in region-leader of smaller cartel gets apprehended-CJNG fill the power vacuum..its been happening for a long time at this point its so blatant the Mex government can and is fully capable of catching these leadership figures no matter how tough , cunning and rich they are portrayed to be..they always end up getting pulled (literally) out of a hole looking dirty wearing huaraches..without any of the grandiose..IF they piss the right person in the Mex government off

  39. La Vaca is just another Michoachango caga palo turning mexico into the shithole they've turned Michoacan into. This Michoacano marrano is no different than Mencho, el Abuelo, Viagras and the corrupt autodefensas. Ojala y se mueran todos los Michoachangos.

And whats up with the pussy ass mexican goverment they detained this guy but jaliscas you play pussy and let them go. Keep the child killers free i guess is the mexican goverment m.o. And lets not forget the cdg and the jaliscas went at it in tula jaliscas won and chopped up the cdg leader. Fucking cdg you used to be the most powerfull cartel in mexico firepower wise when oziel was around untill the split with the zetas but look at you know the pussies from reynosa are sucking on jalisca titty and the matamoros faction is going to start to loose plazas to jaliscas in san luis potosi and zacatecas. Imagine if you were united you cld of fight jaiscas off. Pendejos.

    2. And csrdl didnt give mencho hell?? I mean look how many years and resources it took him to take most but not all of guanajuato. And why haven't they finished off abuelo?

    3. 5:10 CJNG made Marro cry and Abuelo would be dead if it wasn't for the government. I don't like CJNG but for real they are the most powerful cartel in mexico

    4. 2:20 thought the same about Zetas some time ago... and they just disappeared. Not sure if is accurate to affirm that. I would say CDS (Anything under control of Mayo Zambada) is the strongest, with a solid system running since decades ago. The second would be Cartel de Juarez. The rest are much smaller, newer or desperate to control anything that moves, like CJNG. Youll see how long they last.

    5. 7:35 You have to be a troll to really think Cjng is desperate or new

      Delete
    6. 8:44 And you have to be new on this matters thinking CJNG is an old cartel. Wanting to expand and own every single town burning buses and extorting whatever store they find is a desperate measure.

    7. @1222
You must also be new and or you don’t know how things function. CJNG comes from the Milenio cartel and also an ex armed wing of CDS.
Michoacános have been in business for a long time behind the scenes doing business with, bitch slapping and killing chinloas since the old days. Only now with social media and people exposing and talking about what the Sinaloas are really about being government informants do people come to find out.
